Noonday Prayer for Summer

                                                 ABOUT THIS SERVICE
The Church lives in time and with time, and this truth is born out by the observance of prayer even in the midst of
a busy day.

Prayer at midday provides a way to consecrate the day at its center and to realize the presence of God in the heart
of life. The admonition of Jesus that we pray and not be weary is ful lled in this way, and we identify with him on
the cross, the center of his work.

This prayer service is one of among many opportunities for God’s people, laity, religious orders, and clergy to
extend the range of daily prayer.

                                      THE APPOINTED PSALM AND READING
                   The psalm appointed for the day of the week is read responsively by whole verse or in unison.

MONDAY                                                                                             God’s Justice and Peace

Sing a new song, all the earth; sing a new song to God.
Sing and bless the Holy Name; let God’s salvation be praised each day.

Declare God’s glory among the nations, tell all people what God has done.
God is great, deserving of worship, worth of paise more than worldly idols.

Earthly deities are custom-built, but God is the Maker of all.
Honor and splendor belongs to God in whose sanctuary are beauty and strength.

Give God the glory you families of nations, offering your gifts in God’s house.
Praise the Creator, clothed in holiness; tremble with reverence all the earth.

Say to the Nations, “Our God reigns. The world is stable; it shall not be moved;
        God will judge it with fairness.
Let heaven be glad, let earth rejoice; let the sea roar and all its creatures;
        let the fertile eld honor their Maker.

Let the trees of the forest sing for joy for God is coming to judge the earth.
        The world shall be judged with justice, its nations judged with truth.
All Sing a new song, all the earth; sing a new song to God. Psalm 96

As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and
patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the
Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything
together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in
the one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:12–15

TUESDAY                                                                                                 Calling Out to God

Out of the depths I cry to you, O God. Open your ears and give me a hearing.
If you, O God took note of our sins, who could hold their head high?
        But you have chosen to forgive; and for this we revere you.

I wait for God; I wait in hope; my soul waits for my Maker
more than those who wait for the morning, more than those who look for the dawn.
Hope in God, you faithful people, trust in God’s constant love.
         God’s power to liberate brings redemption from every sin. Psalm 130

                                                                                                                           2

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be
imitators of God, as beloved children, and walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant
offering and sacri ce to God. Ephesians 4:32–5:2

WEDNESDAY                                                                                 Resting in God’s Security

My security rest in you, O God; let me never be put to shame.
By your saving power deliver me, hear me and keep me safe.

Be a rock of refuge for me to which I can always come.
Keep me safe from the power of the wicked, from the grasp of the cruel and unjust.

As long as I can remember I have put my trust in you.
I have leaned on you since birth, when you brought me out of the womb.

Keep close when my energy fails me as I send my last years on earth.
Let me wait in constant hope and praise you again and again. Psalm 71

As servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in af ictions,
hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge,
patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of
righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are
treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as
punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing,
and yet possessing everything. 2 Corinthians 6:4–10

THURSDAY                                                                                        God’s Intimate Care

You search me God and you know me; you know my resting and my rising;
       you discern my thoughts from afar.
You are familiar with all my ways — where I go, what I do —
       and you know every word before I say it.

Your presence is all around me; you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is beyond my understanding.

Is there anywhere I could go where you were not there before me?
I climb up to the skies, you are there; if I bed down in the underworld, there I meet you.

If I took the wings of the morning and lived beyond the horizon,
even there your hand would nd me, your right hand would hold me fast.
If I asked the darkness to cover me and the daylight turned to night,
the darkness would not be dark to you; night would be bright as day.

Search me O God and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts.
Prevent me from doing what offends you, and lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-
control. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.” Galatians 5:22, 25

FRIDAY Remembering the Joy of Worship

How lovely is your dwelling place, God of power and might
How lovely is your dwelling place.

I long with heartfelt yearning to be within God’s house.
        My whole being sings for joy to God, the living God.
Even the sparrow nd a home and the swallow makes a nest
        where she can rear her brood close to your holy altars.

Happy are those who live in your house forever offering praise.
Happy are those who trust in you as they walk their pilgrim way.

Better is one day in your temple than a thousand days elsewhere.
         Better to stand at the door of God’s house than live in the tents of the wicked.
God is our sun, God is our shield, giver of glory and grace.
         God refuses no good thing to those who do what is right.

Happy are those who trust in you, God of power and might.
Happy are those who trust in you. Psalm 84

For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name shall be great among the nations, and in every place incense
shall be offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name shall be great among the nations, says the LORD of
hosts. Malachi 1:11

SONG OF OUR TRUE NATURE (FROM JULIAN OF NORWICH)
                                    Christ revealed our frailty and our falling
                                      our trespasses and our humiliations.
                                     Christ also revealed his blessed power,
                                          his blessed wisdom and love.

                                    He protects us as tenderly and as sweetly
                                          when we are in greatest need;
                                    he raises us in spirit and turns everything
                                        to glory and joy without ending.

                                     God is the ground and the substance
                                           the very essence of nature;
                                  God is the true father and mother of natures.

                                      We are all bound to God by nature,
                                     and we are all bound to God by grace.
                                       And this grace is for all the world
                                    because it is our precious mother, Christ.

                                    For this fair nature was prepared by Christ
                                          for the honor and nobility of all
                                         for the joy and bliss of salvation.
                                                                                                               4

THE PRAYERS
     Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.

     O God of many names, lover of all peoples;
     we pray for peace in our hearts and homes,
     in our nations and our world;
     the peace of your will, the peace of our need.

     Dear Christ, our friend and our guide,
     pioneer through the shadow of death,
     passing through darkness to make it light,
     be our companion that we may fear no evil,
     and bring us to life and to glory.

     O God of peace and justice, of holiness and love;
     knit us together in mind and esh, in feeling and in spirit,
     and make us one, ready for that great day;
     the ful llment of all our hopes, and the glory of Jesus Christ.

     Keep us in the spirit of joy and simplicity and mercy.
     Bless us and those you have entrusted to us,
     in and through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

     We pause now to pray in silence for our own needs, for our loved ones, and for our world.
     SILENCE
     COLLECT FOR MIDDAY
     Blessed Savior, at this hour you hung upon the cross, stretching out your loving arms; grant that all the peoples of
     the earth may be drawn to your uplifted love; for your kingdom’s sake. Amen.

     THE LORD’S PRAYER
     Jesus, remember us when you come into your kingdom and teach us to pray:

                                         Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
                                            Your kingdom come, your will be done
                                                  on earth as it is in heaven.

                                                Give us today our daily bread.
                                  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
                                    Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

                       For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

     THE BLESSING A lay leader says “us” instead of “you”

     Live without fear: our Creator has made you holy, has always protected you as a father and loves you as a mother.
     Go in peace to follow the good road.

     May the Wisdom of God, The Love of God, and the Grace of God strengthen you to be Christ’s hands and heart in
     this world, in the name of the Holy Trinity. Amen.

     THE DISMISSAL
     God’s Divine Spirit dwells in us.
     Thanks be to God.
