Every car owner wants the longest
mileage for their petrol dollar.
This issue, Azfar Hashim, Editor
of Motormuse.com share some
valuable tips on fuel saving.
how to save fuel...
Looking for ways to improve your car’s fuel economy? Here are some useful tips for you.
Adopt a good driving habit
In their quest to improve fuel economy, most drivers overlooked the most important point: their driving habit. Some drivers drive
with a heavy right foot, revving their engines unnecessarily, accelerating suddenly and braking abruptly - without realising how
badly it affects their fuel economy. So what can be done?
Simple, really. Always drive smoothly, keep a constant speed, avoid over-revving and use higher gears whenever possible.
Switch the engine off when not in use
Most drivers are guilty of it - letting the engine run just to use the air-con. What most fail to realise is that excess idling leads to fuel
wastage - although the car isn’t moving, the engine is still switched on, which means fuel is still being consumed.
At the same time, you might want to consider using the air-conditioning sparingly. There’s no need to blast the air-con at full
speed and at the minimum temperature all the time.
Service your car regularly
Letting your mechanic check on your car regularly is highly recommended. Besides the normal oil change, other mechanical parts
still need to be checked upon, ensuring that everything is working well.
The rule of thumb is to send the car in for a service based on the grade of engine oil used - if your car is running on mineral or
semi-synthetic engine oil, it’s best to get it changed at every 5,000km interval. If you car is filled up with fully-synthetic engine oil
at its last service, best to get it serviced again after 10,000km. Remember - even a faulty spark plug can lead to compromised fuel
economy.
Do self-checks
Although you are the sort who sends his car in for regular servicing, there are other ways to ensure your car is running at its
optimal level, and fuel economy is kept in check.
Firstly, ensure that your fuel cap is closed properly after every fill up. Secondly, check your tyre pressure at least once a week - if
your tyre pressure is under-inflated by 1psi, it can reduce your fuel efficiency by up to 3%. Lastly, remove excess weight - studies
has shown that every 45kg of excess weight reduces fuel efficiency by up to 2%.

NSRCC’s adult’s bowling team hit gold again this
year as they emerged champion in the Inter-Club
Bowling League!
The team expected no less than a win going into the 16th Inter-Club Mixed Bowling League 2010. Held over 18 weeks, this
Singapore Bowling Federation-sanctioned league is regarded as one of the club’s prized trophy. A total of nine clubs in Singapore
participated and vied for the coveted title.
NSRCC fielded a team of experienced national bowlers and regained the title from arch-rival Changi Beach Club, thereby ending
Changi’s hopes of winning the title three consecutive times. This is our third league title in five years – we have clinched the league
champion title before in 2006 and 2007.
What was especially memorable this year is that on the opening night of the league at Seletar Country Club, NSRCC squad
member, Benjamin Hong bowled a perfect game. This not only set an auspicious start to the league for us, but it also had the other
teams sitting up and taking notice.
“That night was a booster for the entire team,’’ said team captain and Bowling Convenor, Florence Khemlani. “I give them 10/10
for commitment, bonding and scores, especially Benjamin who played in 90% of all matches.”
Clearly the star of the perfect game, Benjamin downplayed his achievement: “The perfect game I achieved was unexpected, there
was pressure to perform as we wanted to win the game. The lane condition was good and we had friendly competition among our
team to keep us focused.”
“The competition was tougher this year, and right from the start everyone brought their A-game,” remarked team member Melvin
who has been with the team for three years. “Scoring was exceptionally high, and after the first match (where Ben bowled a 300),
subsequently our opponents didn’t take any chances and put up very strong bowlers against us and everyone improved their
game.”
NSRCC Coach, Sam Goh, credited the team for their collective effort and attributed their winning strategy to understanding each
individual’s oiling patterns. This means that they took great care to select the right bowlers to match the various lane conditions

each time and then constantly varying the factors in order to best influence the scores. A former SEA Games gold medalist, Sam
oversees the 2-hour training sessions the team puts in every Sunday, correcting their timing in walking and armswing.
The most determining game of the inter-club league lay in the second round match which saw the team beat Orchid Country Club
(OCC) 5-0. It gave them the confidence and motivation to perform their best. “Everyone knew the stakes involved and tried their
best, nobody complained about unfair treatment, bowling too often or less. Unity was the key in the club bringing back the trophy
this year”, added Benjamin. In fact, Janet, the only other female bowler apart from Florence, cited careful planning as a strong
factor in the win – Many discussions were held to determine the team line-up at each game.

national service day
golf 2010
In keeping with our club mission to serve our NSmen and recognise their
contributions towards national defence, we organise National Service Day
Golf every year for members.
This year’s event, held in August, saw almost 200 golfers teeing off to mark this special
occasion; and at the same time, doing their bit to keep our golf courses in mint condition. With
the ‘gotong-royong’ theme in place, the annual affair saw the players working together to repair
divots and ball marks prior to commencing the tournament proper at midday. Props goes to Eric
Chow who scored a hole-in-one on Navy Hole 3 not long after the starting siren sounded for the
shot-gun start.
Gracing the dinner thereafter was Rear-Admiral Ng Chee Peng, Chief of Staff (Joint Staff) who
did the honours in the prize presentation ceremony. Congratulations to Tay Siak Meng William
who was the overall winner and walked away with the top prize for the night – a trophy and a
uring $100 Transview cash voucher.

In this second installment of our golf instructional series, Phil Brew Golf Academy’s
Director of Golf, Brad McManus sheds some light on the moment of impact. Brad
is an AAA Australian PGA Member and a Class Singapore PGA Member. He can be
contacted at bmcmanus@alphalink.com.au
let’s talk about
impact
Flush, Pure, Solid.
I love these terms. These words are often used in golfing circles to high light a perfect strike of the ball, a
centered contact at the moment of truth, “Impact”.
Have you ever thought about the word “Impact”? It sounds like we are describing a crash or a collision and to some
extent that’s exactly what we are describing. Impact is the collision between the club head and the ball during the
swing.
The best players in the world have a different impact to most of us. They hit the ball precisely in the center of the
clubface, the sweet spot. They do this with greater force and thus the result is faster acceleration of the ball (more
distance) and a penetrating trajectory of ball flight.
In order to achieve this flush result, the player must
generate club head speed and combine it with the
following “Impact Conditions”:
• Flat Left Wrist
• Bent Right Wrist
• Leaning Shaft
• Open Hips
• Head Behind the Ball
• Right Knee moving towards target
The result of these conditions is a downward
compressing strike of the ball and that’s exactly
what all players should be trying to achieve.
20on par
For the average golfer, the right hand becomes over active and the right wrist tends to flatten too early.
The club then has an early release (casting) which results in the club bottoming out too early causing a ‘Fat
or Heavy Shot’.
We humans are clever however, in order for the club to strike the ball our sub-conscience kicks in. We stand
up during the downswing instead of turning our hips, or we bend the left arm to prevent the club from
digging into the grass prematurely (chicken wing effect). This leads to extra loft being added to the club
face and the ball flies high and with poor compression.
So become familiar with the correct impact conditions. Practice them.
Stand in your address position, then simply lean the club shaft forward
towards the target, turn your left hip left ensuring your tail bone has
moved forward and keep your head behind the ball.
You will notice that your right wrist becomes bent and the left wrist flat.
Let your right foot roll in slightly allowing the right knee to move towards
the target.
Now hold this position for 10 seconds. Then relax and do it again.
Feel the downward force of your right palm pressing against the top of
the left thumb. Bend the shaft.
Do this in your practice routine, do it at home, do it in the office.
You may even wish to begin your swing from this position.
Become familiar with a correct impact and it will filter its way into your actual swing. Your ball flight will
improve and the sound and feel of a compressing shot has fantastic rewards. You too can flush it like a pro.
