Come join us at the Tim Horton Event Centre, home to the NOJHL Cochrane Crunch Junior ‘A’ hockey
team, 2018 Division Champion and hosts of the 2019 Dudley Hewitt Cup. While you’re there, enjoy the
beautiful pool that has the flavor of the tropics where you can float in the lazy river and thrill on the
giant slide! We have been voted one of the top 50 small towns to visit in Canada, top 10 cutest small
towns in Ontario and the #1 snowmobile trails in the world! We are also transportation hub for the
mining and lumber sector, and the originating point for the Polar Bear Express passenger train to
Moosonee and points north.

POLAR BEAR
HABITAT
The Habitat is currently home to three
male polar bears: Ganuk, Henry, and
Inukshuk, who would not survive in
the wild.
These polar bears have access to more
than 24 acres of natural subarctic and
boreal environment, including a 10-
acre lake that forms an ice platform in
the winter. This is the largest space in
the world dedicated to polar bears in
human care.
The Polar Bear Habitat is open to the
public seven days a week year-round,
closed only on Jan. 1 and Dec. 25.
When you visit the Habitat, you’ll have

MUSEUM
The Cochrane Classic Vintage Riders
Snowmobile Museum is the first of its kind
and now open in its new, bigger and better
digs adjacent to the Welcome Centre of the
Polar Bear Habitat. Admission is free with
your paid entrance to the Polar Bear Habitat.
The Snowmobile Museum’s exhibit traces
the rich journey of Cochrane’s snowmobile
history from the 1950’s to present day. The
museum showcases close to 100 vintage
sleds and includes an archive of historic
photographs and unique memorabilia. The
Museum and the Vintage Riders also play
host to their “Annual Drag Races” the second
week of February on Lake Commando and a
‘Vintage’ snowmobile ride the first weekend
in March with sleds and riders from near
and far to showcase their vintage sleds.

VILLAGE
Take a trip back in time to the early 1900’s,
when Cochrane was being settled. Our
Heritage Village, just steps away from the
Polar Bear Habitat Learning Centre, has a
picturesque main street to explore. Here
you will find a train station, a general store,
butcher shop, doctor’s office, blacksmith’s
shop, fire station and school house.
We even have a Trapper’s Cabin facing the
new polar bear lake enclosure. Come and
enjoy the ‘Festival of Lights’ at the Heritage
Village as part of the Christmas season.
Warm up by the bonfire with hot chocolate,
enjoy carolling and a visit from the ‘other Big
Guy’ from the North Pole! Nanook’s Snack

Worth a visit! The Cassiopeia IV is the northernmost ferry service operating
9 months of the year, 24 hours a day free of charge. It is the last winch driven
cable ferry operating in Canada and is located 32 km north of Cochrane on
Hwy#579 crossing the Abitibi River. The crossing takes less than two minutes
each way but the memories will last a lifetime.

Cochrane is a Francophone host community
on the Aventure Nord trail system. It was
developed as a series of trails and snowparks
that encompass all four seasons: motorcycle
and ATV riding in the spring, summer and
fall, and snowmobiling in winter. Individual
trails and snowparks have been mapped,
thanks to the knowledge of local clubs
and experts, as a connected trail and park
system with the five main communities who
participate in the promotion of the system:
Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing,
Hearst, and Dubreuilville. All trail systems
can be downloaded to gps devices from the

There are many reasons people ride the
Polar Bear Express. For some it’s a commuter
train, between the remote communities of
the north and highway access to the south.
For the train buffs, it’s a reminder of how
integral the railroad and train travel were to

trade - seeing the mighty rivers that were
the roadways to James Bay. For the intrepid
paddlers, it is the last leg of their carefully
