Panda Notes - Chengdu International School
Alison Allen with other iSC principals and the Director of Administration Admissions Officer

Letter from the High School Principal:

This is one of my favorite times of the year! Spring is on its way, which means warmer days
which I love, as anyone who has been to my office can attest. It also means U.S. college
acceptance letters are on the way. It’s thrilling to see our seniors making plans for their future,
and I imagine who they will be and what they’ll be doing in five or ten years!

Our students are not just applying to colleges in the United States; we also have students
applying to colleges in Canada, Japan, and South Korea. In January, I had the opportunity to
visit Seoul with a group of university guidance counselors and principals from all of the iSC
Panda Notes - Chengdu International School
schools. We met with admissions counselors from several of the top universities there. At Korea
University, we were led on a guided tour of the campus by a student fluent in English. The tour
featured expansive libraries and underground student study areas with cutting-edge technology
on display. The Yonsei campus was a mixture of brick and mortar, reflecting its history, and
glass and steel reflecting its eye toward the future. Sogang impressed with its communal feel
and dedication to hard work. And I was awe-struck by Seoul National’s expansive campus that
offered everything a student would need to advance and succeed. Fun fact: We have two
students from the 2018 graduating class studying there!

I took copious notes and couldn’t wait to get back to share what I’d learned during the visits.
Things like how closely all universities look at attendance, and the importance of having
extracurricular activities, what 3-year and 12-year means, and the advantages associated with
each designation.

Each of the universities visited is dedicated to excellence in identifying and accepting the very
best students from all over the world. I hope you can join us on March 12, 2019, from 3 p.m. to
4 p.m. to hear all about the colleges we visited and get tips on the application process. The
session will be conducted in Korean by our Korean liaison Mrs. Jina Oh, and I’ll be on hand to
answer questions about the visit and what admissions officers are looking for in future students.

 Ms. Allen

                           Medications at School
Panda Notes - Chengdu International School
If your child needs medication for any reason at school, please send it to the
Nurse in a sealed plastic bag along with the medicine in its original package.
Parents must also complete and sign the Medication Permission Form (click
here). You can also get a printed copy of the form at Reception.

It is the school policy that students may not keep personal medication in their
backpacks unless it is for treating a life-threatening condition such as asthma. In
those cases, the parents still need to send the Medication Permission Form to
school informing staff of the medication. Please contact the Health Office if you
have any questions.

Thank you for helping to keep our school safe and healthy!

On Monday, the Elementary Student Council had a panel discussion in which candidates running for office
had the opportunity to answer questions sharing why they would like to run for office, their leadership
skills, and their goals for the elementary student council. This was immediately followed by an election in
which 4th and 5th graders marked their choices on a secret ballot to vote for their desired candidates.

The results of the election: Rachel Kim for President, Jessica Liao for Vice President, Avery Bowen for
Secretary, Miranda Sang for Treasurer, and Jocelyn Chen for Publicity Officer.

A look into ECE and Elementary on Dr. Seuss Day!
Saturday, March 2nd, was Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Dr. Seuss was a famous author who wrote many fun books
for young readers, such as Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish,
Blue Fish. Many of his books rhyme, have silly made-up characters, and are great for kids of all ages.
Throughout this week, classes in Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss in different ways. Classes had special
guest readers, did fun crafts, made oobleck(slime), made homemade butter and green eggs and ham, or
learned about the author’s life. And every class read his books! We had a fun week learning about and
celebrating one of our favorite authors.

                                  A Glimpse into High School
This week Modern World History students have been researching how the Industrial Revolution impacted modern society.
During this assignment students were directed to the stairs to step up and down one step as fast as possible so a classmate
could calculate their horsepower. Then they compared the data to the might of 19 th century machinery. We think this is a
great way to engage the whole student in their learning!
Last weekend nine students had the opportunity to represent CDIS at the annual Model United Nations
conference in Qingdao. There were 20 schools that united under one common goal to find ways to reduce
poverty in the world. Our students successfully created, debated, and passed resolutions with students
from around China. It was an honor and privilege to see our students engaged in such a fantastic learning
experience.
On Thursday, the PTO held a full day of activities for Women’s Day! They started with a morning of fashion
tips, followed by lunch together, and in the afternoon held cooking classes to learn to make homemade
ice cream and bulgogi. It was a fun day for everyone!
