Pastors Message
This week from January 31st to February 6th we celebrate the Catholic Schools Week with
the theme: “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” Catholic schools have a specific
purpose to form students to be good citizens of the world, helping them grow in Faith, Ex-
cellence and Service. This is also a time for us to engage in a positive way in the formation
of our students in their faith journey. How can we help them? There is a spiritual battle go-
ing on beneath and above the surface of human history, not just for the children and
youth, but also for us adults.
We cannot avoid being involved in this battle as long as we are here on earth. The devil is
just too interested in making our lives miserable, now and forever, by separating us from
God. But Jesus was able to expel the demons from those who were possessed easily and
definitively. And he is also able to give us strength to overcome the temptations that
plague us. Three things especially can help this strength flow more freely in our lives and
that of our children.
First, stay close to Christ. It was because the man in today’s Gospel was close to Christ that
Jesus was able to expel the demon. The same goes for us if we and our children stay close
to Christ, especially through regular prayer and the Eucharist.
Second, stay close to the truth. The devil's main weapon is deception. He manipulates our
selfish tendencies by spreading lies and half-truths. This is one reason he fights to keep us
out of the confessional. Confession is the gift of truth: we face the truth about ourselves
by confessing our sins, failures, and weaknesses, and God, through the priest, reminds us
of his truth: mercy, forgiveness, unconditional grace. The devil loves the darkness; confes-
sion unleashes the light.
Third, stay close to others in need. The devil is the lord of selfishness, and Christ is the Lord
of love. When we resist our selfishness by serving others, whatever their need may be, we
weaken the devil's influence in our lives.
Every Christian is a spiritual warrior. Today, as Jesus renews his commitment to us in our
Sunday Celebration, let us renew our commitment to him with faith, excellence, and ser-
vice. Let us promise him that this week we will do something specific to help us stay close
to Christ, close to the truth, and close to others in need.

Esta semana, del 31 de enero al 6 de febrero, estamos celebrando la Semana de Escuelas Cató-
licas con el tema: “Escuelas Católicas: Fe. Excelencia. Servicio.” Las escuelas católicas tienen
un propósito específico para formar a los estudiantes para ser buenos ciudadanos del mundo,
ayudándolos a crecer en la Fe, Excelencia y Servicio. También es un tiempo para comprometer-
nos en una manera positiva en la formación de nuestros estudiantes en su recorrido de Fe.
¿Cómo podemos ayudarlos? Hay una batalla espiritual en marcha por debajo y por encima de la
superficie de la historia humana, no solo para los niños y los jóvenes sino también para noso-
tros los adultos.
No podemos evitar participar en esta batalla mientras estemos aquí en la tierra. El demonio
está muy interesado en hacer miserables nuestras vidas, ahora y siempre, separándonos de
Dios. Pero Jesús pudo expulsar fácil y definitivamente los demonios de los que estaban poseí-
dos. Y también le es posible darnos la fuerza para superar las tentaciones que nos atormentan.
Las tres cosas que pueden ayudar especialmente a que esta fuerza fluya más libremente en
nuestras vidas y las de nuestros hijos.
Primero, estar cerca de Cristo. Fue porque el hombre en el Evangelio de hoy estaba cerca de
Cristo que le fue posible a Jesús expulsar al demonio. Lo mismo nos pasa si nosotros y nues-
tros hijos nos mantenemos cerca de Cristo, especialmente con la oración diaria y la Eucaristía.
Segundo, estar cerca de la verdad. El arma principal del demonio es el engaño. Manipula nues-
tras tendencias egoístas difundiendo mentiras y medias verdades. Esta es la razón por la que
lucha para mantenernos lejos del confesionario. La confesión es el don de la verdad: nos en-
frentamos a la verdad sobre nosotros mismos confesando nuestros pecados, fallas, y debilida-
des, y Dios, por medio del Sacerdote, nos recuerda su verdad: misericordia, perdón, gracia in-
condicional. El demonio ama la oscuridad; la confesión desata la luz.
Tercero, estar cerca de los necesitados. El demonio es el amo del egoísmo, y Cristo es el Amo
del Amor. Cuando resistimos nuestro egoísmo sirviendo a los demás, cualquiera que sea su ne-
cesidad, debilitamos la influencia del demonio en nuestras vidas.
Cada Cristiano es un guerrero espiritual. Hoy, mientras Jesús renueva su compromiso con no-
sotros, en nuestra celebración dominical, renovemos nuestro compromiso para Él con fe, ex-
celencia y servicio. Prometámosle a Él, que esta semana haremos algo específico para ayudar-
nos a estar cerca de Cristo, cerca de la verdad y cerca de los necesitados.

Who can resist the teachings of a leader who speaks with authority? His
disciples, his enemies, and even the evil spirits recognized that they
could not argue with him because He spoke with authority. This is an
authority that came from God. Every Christian must proclaim the mes-
sage of the Gospel with the authority that comes from God.
People were marveled by Jesus because he did not teach the same way the doctors of the
law. Instead, He taught with the same authority that comes from his own person. And be-
sides that, He teaches a new doctrine. To the authority in his teachings, we may add the ca-
pacity to liberate from evil. In ancient times, illnesses were attributed to evil spirits which
present themselves as the personification of evil. The novelty is that in the presence of Je-
sus, evil is reduced to powerlessness since even the evil spirits obey Him.
Jesus' audience in the synagogue tremble in front of this man who can speak with such
powerful authority. This is something completely new that shows in three ways: teaching,
authority, and novelty. "What does this mean? A new way of teaching with authority?" The
evangelist underlines the impact that Jesus' teaching had on the people.
A selfish personal style of relating to God and with others, has permeated through us, to
our very essence. Ambition, the desire to own, aggressiveness, running above others, the
exclusive attention to one's own problems drive us constantly to say or think like: Save me
regardless of the rest.
Jesus said many new things to us, and when he left us as testament to his new command-
ment: "Love one another"... it would have been no more than a routine repetition if he had
not added: "As I have loved you." This is completely different! What Jesus teaches is some-
thing else, another world of thought and behavior. Jesus makes a new world born, because
when He speaks it is God who speaks and liberates in us a whole new person. Jesus comes
to tell us for certain: "Love one another as God has loved you."
We must build together a new world, based upon justice and Christian charity. Let us open
every day the pages of the Gospel so we can learn the lessons that Jesus taught us and by
them, follow His example.

¿Quién se puede resistir a las enseñanzas de un líder que habla con autori-
dad? Sus discípulos, sus enemigos, e incluso los espíritus malignos reco-
nocieron que no podían argumentar con Él porque Él hablaba con autori-
dad. Esta era una autoridad que venía de Dios. Cada cristiano debería proclamar el mensaje
del Evangelio con la autoridad que viene de Dios.
La gente estaba maravillada con Jesús porque El no enseñaba de la misma manera que los
doctores de la ley lo hacían. En su lugar, enseñaba con la misma autoridad que provenía de
sí mismo. Y además de eso, enseña una doctrina nueva. A la autoridad en sus enseñanzas
podemos agregar la capacidad de liberar del mal. En los tiempos antiguos, las enfermeda-
des eran atribuidas a espíritus malignos que se presentan como la personificación del mal.
La novedad es que en la presencia de Jesús, el mal se reduce a la impotencia ya que incluso
los espíritus malignos le obedecen.
La audiencia de Jesús en la sinagoga tiembla en frente de este hombre que puede hablar
con tal poderosa autoridad. Esto es algo completamente nuevo que se muestra en tres
modos: enseñanza, autoridad y novedad. "¿Qué significa esto? ¿Una nueva manera de ense-
ñar con autoridad?" El evangelista subraya el impacto que la enseñanza de Jesús tuvo en la
gente.
Un estilo personal egoísta de relacionarse con Dios y con los demás, ha permeado a través
de nosotros a nuestra esencia misma. Ambición, el deseo de poseer, agresividad, estar arri-
ba de los demás, la atención exclusiva a nuestros propios problemas nos lleva constante-
mente a hablar o pensar como: Sálvame, independientemente del resto.
Jesús nos dijo muchas cosas nuevas, y cuando nos dejó como testimonio de su nuevo man-
damiento: "Ámense los unos a los otros"... habría sido más que una repetición rutinaria si no
hubiera añadido "Como Yo los he Amado." ¡Esto es completamente diferente! Lo que Jesús
enseña es otra cosa otro mundo de pensamiento y comportamiento. Jesús hace nacer un
nuevo mundo, porque cuando El habla, es Dios el que habla y libera en nosotros una nueva
persona. Jesús viene a decirnos con certeza: "Ámense los unos a los otros como Dios los
ha amado."
Debemos construir juntos un nuevo mundo, basado en la justicia y caridad cristiana. Abra-
mos cada día las páginas del Evangelio para que aprendamos las lecciones que Jesús nos
enseñó y por ello sigamos Su ejemplo.
