THE PODCAST
Dear Vargas Families,
Today we welcomed our final group of students to campus! Our hybrid 4th and 5th graders started in-person instruction and our
virtual classrooms welcomed some new faces into their classroom communities. We are excited to have students from all grade
levels back on campus.
Second trimester report cards are being sent home this week during grade-level materials distribution. We encourage you to look
carefully at your child’s scores and read the comment section thoroughly in order to understand areas of strength and areas for
growth. It is a good idea to celebrate and discuss your child’s progress with them and ask them questions. If questions come up when
you read your child’s report card, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher to get more clarification. This can also
facilitate collaboration between the school and the home in order to support your child and meet their specific needs.
Next week is Spring Break! It is an opportunity to relax and spend time with family. Please continue to practice safety while on break
by wearing masks and social distancing when out in the community. While the number of COVID cases is lower than earlier in the
school year, these safety precautions are still very important. They keep us safe, and protect others. Let’s all do our part so we can
return to school safe and healthy on April 19th.

Character Trait of the Month – Perseverance
Perseverance is the trait of the month for April. An incredibly important trait, perseverance encompasses the ability to continue on
through challenges both big and small. As children develop, their ability to stick with a task improves naturally but can also be
cultivated further through modeling, practicing and goal setting. As adults, we are the best models for children to emulate. Let them
know what you’re thinking when you’re struggling to finish something yourself. How do you overcome it? How do you need to coach
yourself through the task? Share that with your kids! Homework is another great way to build perseverance. Set goals with your
students- have them complete a certain amount before taking a quick break, then completing more. As they get older, they begin to
set their own goals as they learn what works best for them. Vargas- we can’t wait to hear about all the great ways you show
perseverance!
Science Spin
We are excited to announce that the monthly Maker Lab Challenge will be returning now that COVID conditions have
improved!
For the month of April, we will be honoring Earth Day (April 22nd). This month students will design a flower pot from
recycled materials (soup can, water bottle, toilet paper roll cardboard). After spring break, Maker Lab seed kits (soil
and seeds) will be available for pick up. FYI- the soil will be in the form of a peat pellet- these need to be soaked in
water for at least 5 hours before they will be ready for seeds (directions will be in the kits). We can’t wait to see your
creativity in designing your flower pots and all the beautiful flowers that grow.
Student Council
Do you have an awesome talent? The Vargas 2021 Talent Show is looking for performers! You can do some cool
tricks, sing, or maybe you can show your best dance moves. Due to the pandemic and not being able to meet in a
large space, this year the talent show will be virtual. We will be taking videos of students performing their act that
the student council will put together and play for the school on Wednesday, May 12th. If you are interested in
performing please ask for a permission form from your teacher to learn more.
The permission forms are due Friday, April 23rd. The actual talent show will be on Wednesday, May 12th. Again ask your teacher
how to get the link to the online permission form! We can’t wait to see what talents get shared this year. Good luck! Don’t forget to
practice and have fun!
Have You Moved?
The front office has been receiving more than the usual amount of returned mail and disconnected phone
numbers. It is extremely important that we have CURRENT INFORMATION for all of our students. That includes
address, phone numbers and emails to parents/guardians.
Please contact the office if any of your contact information has changed. Also, if your child has any new health
issues, please make sure we know as well. Typically this information is collected at the beginning of the school
year through our online program, but that was not sent out to families this August.
Vargas School Needs You!
Vargas PTA is looking to fill three positions for next school year: President, Secretary, and VP of fundraising. If we don’t fill the President
and Secretary positions will we lose our PTA next year! PTA is such a HUGE help to the school, please take the time to consider if you
can volunteer. Maybe you and a friend can co-chair a position? If you have any questions, please reach out to president@vargaspta.org

Food Distribution
Twice a month we will be distributing free groceries from Second Harvest Food Bank. The next distribution
is Friday, April 23 from 12:30-2:00 PM or until supplies last on the Carson Ave side of Vargas School. Families can
drive or walk up to pick up the groceries free of charge with no income verification needed. The boxes
of groceries are large, so please be sure you have something to transport them home in if you choose to walk.
**Grocery supplies have been running out before 2 pm, so please try to be in line as early as possible. **
Vargas Meals
Our amazing kitchen staff has started preparing food for students on campus and will have grab-and-go meal bundles available for
community members age 18 and under. The service hours for grab-and-go pick-up will remain the same: 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Breakfast, lunch, snack, and supper will be available.
Order Your Meal Bundles for Spring Break
In addition to the regular, daily meal service, 5-day meal bundles will be available for pick-up on Friday, APRIL 9TH. The 5-day meal
bundle will include 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 snacks, and 5 dinners.
If you would like to order a 5-day meal bundle, please indicate below the family name, pickup location, number of bundle meals,
email, and phone number.
Meal bundles will be available for everyone under the age of 18 on Friday, APRIL 9TH from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm at Bishop, Columbia
Middle, Ellis, Lakewood, San Miguel, Vargas, Fairwood, Cherry Chase, and Cumberland.

Seven Day Meal Kits
Seven day meal kits are available to pick up on Wednesdays at Sunnyvale Middle School from 7:30am – 9:00am. You will need to
pre-order your meal kit using the Google Form below:

Included in the kit will be bulk items such as a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk, a bag of lettuce, a bag of chicken tenders, fruit, and
assorted breakfast items. We will also include recipes for suggested uses of the item in each kit.
Registration for 2021-2022
We are now registering new students for next school year. For kindergarten enrollment, your child must be 5 by September 1, 2021.
For your child to be eligible for transitional kindergarten, your child must be five between September 2, 2021 and December 2, 2021.
Because we have moved the registration process online this year, we created instructional videos to help walk families through the
process. Please feel free to share with new families you may know!

TK Families:
Your registration in TK will not automatically roll over into a kindergarten registration for the 2021-2022 school year. All TK students
must register for kindergarten at their home school.
Current 5th Grade Families:
Sunnyvale Middle School will contact all incoming 6th grade families this summer about what is needed to start the school year in
August. Please keep a lookout for any mail/email from them.
Vargas Front Office Hours
The front office is here to support you! For everyone’s safety, we ask that you email or call the office with any questions or needs you
might have. If you need to come by the office in person, it is helpful to make an appointment with the front office staff. Please call us
at (408) 522-8267 or email randi.salas@sesd.org. Please be sure to wear a mask and we ask that only one family enters the office at
a time.
Safety Reminders
The safety of our Vargas community is our top priority. In order to continue to keep staff, students, and families safe, please always
remember to do the following when visiting campus. Thank you for your continued cooperation!
Wear a mask (adults and children)
Maintain social distance from others (6 ft)
Wait outside the office if there is another family being helped inside
If you are not feeling well, or a member of your household is not feeling well, please stay home. Please call us and we will
determine how we can safely assist you with your needs.
Limit visits to school. Call the front office or email whenever possible.

Estimadas Familias de Vargas,
¡Hoy le dimos la bienvenida a nuestro último grupo de estudiantes al campus! Nuestros alumnos híbridos de cuarto y quinto grado
comenzaron la instrucción en persona y nuestras aulas virtuales dieron la bienvenida a algunas caras nuevas en sus comunidades de
aulas. Estamos emocionados de tener estudiantes de todos los niveles de grado en el campus.
Las boletas de calificaciones del segundo trimestre se enviarán a casa esta semana durante la distribución de materiales de nivel de
grado. Lo alentamos a que observe detenidamente los puntajes de su hijo y lea la sección de comentarios detenidamente para
comprender las áreas de fortaleza y las áreas de crecimiento. Es una buena idea celebrar y discutir el progreso de su hijo con ellos y
hacerles preguntas. Si surgen preguntas cuando lee la boleta de calificaciones de su hijo, no dude en comunicarse con el maestro de

Rasgo de carácter del mes- perseverancia
La perseverancia es el rasgo del mes de abril. Un rasgo increíblemente importante, la perseverancia abarca la capacidad de continuar
a través de desafíos tanto grandes como pequeños. A medida que los niños se desarrollan, su capacidad para cumplir una tarea mejora
naturalmente, pero también puede cultivarse más a través del modelado, la práctica y el establecimiento de objetivos. Como adultos,
somos los mejores modelos para que los niños los emulen. Hágales saber lo que está pensando cuando está luchando por terminar
algo usted mismo. ¿Cómo lo superas? ¿Cómo necesita prepararse a sí mismo a través de la tarea? ¡Comparta eso con sus hijos! La
tarea es otra excelente manera de desarrollar la perseverancia. Establezca metas con sus estudiantes: pídales que completen una

metas a medida que aprenden qué funciona mejor para ellos.

Distribución de comida
Dos veces al mes distribuiremos alimentos gratuitos del Second Harvest Food Bank. La próxima distribución es el
viernes 23 de abril de 12: 30-2: 00 PM o hasta agotar existencias en el lado de Carson Ave de la escuela Vargas.
Las familias pueden conducir o caminar para recoger los comestibles sin cargo sin necesidad de verificación de
ingresos. Las cajas de comestibles son grandes, así que asegúrese de tener algo para transportarlas a casa si
decide caminar.

Familias TK:
Su registro en TK no se transferirá automáticamente a un registro de jardín de infantes para el año escolar 2021-2022. Todos los
