PR Power Analysis We analysed the 1,213 people that have appeared in PRWeek’s Power Book since 2007 and have shortlisted 52 people we call this very special shortlist ‘The Perennials’. December 2014
ELLWOOD ATFIELD PRWEEK POWER BOOK ANALYSIS 2015 heralds the year that in-house PR professionals reach parity with agency professionals in equally populating the PRWeek Power Book. But agency bosses continue to trump their in–house peers in respect of sustained appearances in PRWeek’s annual listing. So concludes an in-depth statistical analysis of the PRWeek Power Book from 2007 to the present undertaken by Ellwood Atfield (EA). From Abbandonato and Abrahams to Zajac, Zetter and Zurcher, Ellwood Atfield crunched all entries over eight years to explore trends in influential longevity. Our analysis found that just 52 PR professionals – we are calling them the ‘EA Power Book Perennials’ - have featured in the eight PR Week Power Books published since 2007. These 52 people are the only all-years appearances of the 1,213 names included in at least one Power Book since 2007: the all-years list is male-dominated and agency-dominated, although the latter aspect is gradually reducing to reflect the steady rise in status of the in-house communicator. This year less than one third (just 31%) of the 327 people included in the Power Book are women – down from the previous highest female percentage of 34%, which was recorded in both 2010 and 2012. Despite the growing prominence of in-house professionals – 50% of this year’s 327 names work in-house, a figure that has risen from 34% in 2007 when 87% of the ‘Perennials’ worked in agencies. So, why do agency bosses continue to trump in-house professionals in respect of sustained appearances? First, those working in agencies have ultimate oversight of multiple clients (and thus increased visibility) than someone working in-house (for one client).
OTHER INTERESTING FACTS, TRENDS AND CURIOS Second, many of the agency ‘Perennials’ have worked for the same agency (usually their own) for at least a decade: sustained presence at a successful agency’s helm is easier to track (and, to an extent, acknowledge) than someone shifting between roles. Third, the agency ‘Perennials’ arguably have more reasons to endeavour to maintain their PR industry profile (and thus come to the attention of the list compilers) ahead of in-house professionals who are likely to focus on their employer’s networks. • L ess than two per cent of the country’s estimated PR professionals have ever been featured in a PR Week Power Book (1,213 names in total divided by the 62,000 people who the PRCA estimate work in PR). • S ome big-name previous entrants (e.g. Edelman’s David Brain) seem nowadays to be omitted as they are based overseas. • A t least three previous entrants are now MPs – Tracey Crouch, George Eustace and Margot James - while two previous entrants have disappeared from the book due to imprisonment (Max Clifford and Andy Coulson) – and Prime Minister David Cameron, former Communications Director at Carlton TV, never appeared. • M any of the names are former journalists: one such person to appear for two successive years was Kamal Ahmed (2008-2009), who has returned to journalism. • S ome oddities over the years: i.e. people disappearing for a single year with no obvious reason (e.g. Shine Communications’ Rachel Bell in 2011; Roland Rudd’s non-appearance in 2007; Lord Mandelson’s absence this year); and the inclusion of one non-person (2007): ‘The World’s Leading…’ an anonymous tech blogger (2007) who told PR Week his/her ‘ideal epitaph’ would be ‘404 Error – File Not Found’.
