Prayer Diary – April-June 2020
This diary has been compiled to help us pray together for one another and our common concerns. It is
also available on the diocesan website www.europe.anglican.org, both for downloading (PDF) and for
viewing. The latter should be updated as new appointments and other changes are announced.
A daily prayer update is sent via PrayerMate and Twitter (on the diocesan account @DioceseinEurope)
Each chaplaincy, with the communities it serves, is remembered in prayer once a quarter, following
this weekly pattern:

    • Eastern Archdeaconry: Monday, Saturday
    • Archdeaconry of France: Tuesday, Saturday
    • Archdeaconry of Gibraltar: Wednesday, Saturday
    • Italy & Malta Archdeaconry: Friday
    • Archdeaconry of North West Europe: Thursday
    • Swiss Archdeaconry: Friday
    • Archdeaconry of Germany and Northern Europe
             • Nordic and Baltic Deanery: Monday
             • Germany: Saturday

On Sundays, we pray for subjects which affect us all (e.g. reconciliation, on Remembrance Sunday), or
which have local applications for most of us (e.g. the local cathedral or cathedrals). This will include
Diocesan Staff, Churches in Communion and Ecumenical Partners.

SUNDAY INTERCESSIONS should, by tradition, include prayer for Bishop Robert and the local
Head of State by name. In addition, prayers may also include Bishop David (the Suffragan Bishop)
and, among the heads of other states, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the leaders of other
countries represented in the congregation.

Covid-19 and our Prayer Diary

At the moment, our concept of ‘normal life’ is badly disrupted by the effects of this virus and our
governments’ countermeasures to try to control its spread. A number of events are included in this
diary which might be cancelled or postponed. In order to be real, I have listed them with a
‘provisional’ wording and, in each case, an invitation to pray for the work of the group, synod, etc.
which would have been meeting. Our services might be interrupted but prayer never can be!

William Lister, Chaplain in Florence, has produced a set of “Coronavirus Prayers” which may be
accessed here: https://medium.com/@williamlister/coronavirus-prayers-
d5b27d3759dd?source=friends_link&sk=622f1483984dbbaed8a17389653dab13 I am happy to
commend them as an additional resource for this time.

This prayer point from Trinity Church, Lyon seems worth placing also in this ‘headline’ – it probably
reflects the experience of most of us: “As the health crisis continues, we have had to suspend all
normal services and meetings. Pray that God will work through us as we find novel ways to worship
and minister via the internet. We ask God's blessing particularly on all those for whom the current
period of compulsory confinement will be especially difficult.”
