President’s Message
Alwine Barlow
Welcome to the 2019 - 2020 bowling season.
I am honoured to be president of this
wonderful club for the forthcoming
year.
Last season Bowls North Harbour chose
to hold its awards afternoon in our
clubrooms. It was great to have a number
of our Milford members among the
recipients, runners up in the women’s 1-8
Fours and first in the women’s Champ of
Champ pairs. In February our own flagship
event the Milford 5000 attracted a full
field of 96 players and for the second year
in a row a Milford team won the plate section. In June one of our junior
teams won the Sorrill Cup, an annual event held at Brown’s Bay. We
look forward with anticipation to seeing what successes our members
achieve this year.
Your board members have been busy during the last three months
learning their new roles, preparing the season’s programme, contacting
sponsors, looking after the facilities and preparing this handbook. On
behalf of you all I thank them for offering their time and talents to keep
the club rolling.
While the greens have been closed our indoor bowlers have been
playing. I hope they have had a fun filled season.
As a club we are fortunate that so many members volunteer to help
with the multitude of tasks that are required to keep the club running
smoothly. Frequently there are requests for help. I ask that you consider
these and respond whenever possible. Many hands make light work.
4 MILFORD BOWLING CLUB | rolling out the good timesWe are especially grateful to Sheila Knox, Ralph Aulick and Zelda Bridgens
who for a long time have run Milford’s Tuesday and Thursday outdoor
rollups. They have now asked to be relieved of this weekly commitment
and with this in mind we are trialling a roster system for this season.
We are very grateful to our sponsors for their support. Please use their
services and remember to mention Milford Bowls when you are in
touch with them.
Last year we received many favourable comments on the quality of our
two grass greens. These are the envy of most clubs. We are expecting
that they will again be of an excellent standard. But there is no point in
having excellent greens lying idle so let’s make full use of them.
I wish you all an excellent season on the greens. We look forward to a
fun time with many events and championships.

Club Competitions
General Format
Club Competitions are divided into two categories:
(a) C
lub Championship events – separate competitions are held for
Men and women bowlers and most lead on to Centre Champion of
Champions events.
(b) Club Trophy events. These are open to both men and women and
teams may consist of any gender combination, with the exception
of Mixed Fours to have 2 men and 2 women combo.
(c) P layers are reminded if they win the event that they MUST represent
the Club at the Centre Champ of Champs event.
General Conditions
(a) A
ll club competitions will be played in accordance with current
World Bowls laws and Bowls NZ Domestic Regulations.
(b) Members must have paid their subscriptions before entering any
competitions.
(c) O
nly Full Playing Members shall be eligible to compete in club
competitions.
(d) S hould a player or a team fail to be present at the time set down for
commencement of the game or within thirty minutes thereafter,
they may suffer a loss by default.
(e) I n competitions where there is a time limit on games, such time
limit will not apply to the final or any game which is a possible final.
www.bowlsmilford.co.nz 13(f) P re-game practice. Where a player or team has not yet played on
the green during the day (or has had a bye in the previous round)
and is due to play against a player or team that has played the
previous round on that day, the player or team that did not play
previously will be entitled to practise. The Match Committee will
advise conditions. (Subject only to the general conditions set out in
the Laws of the Game, Section 1.4 Practice – Page 17)
Substitutes and replacements in Pairs, Triples and
Fours games
This can sometimes be a contentious area. Members are encouraged
to read and become familiar with the Laws of the Games, Domestic
Regulation 7 – Page 101. In general terms:
(a) A substitute is a player temporarily filling a position for an absent
team member.
(b A replacement is an acquired team member who has taken the
place of an original team member unable to play through absence
or illness or unable to return for subsequent play in the current
competition. The player shall have the same rights as those of other
team members.
(c) Teams seeking or organising substitutes or replacements should
liaise closely with the Match committee and obtain their approval
well before the start of the next round of competition.
Players’ attention is particularly drawn to the Laws of the Game,
Domestic Regulation 7.7 (b) – Page 103, covering the situation where
a team member has entered another tournament scheduled to play at
the same time. DON’T DO IT!
14 MILFORD BOWLING CLUB | rolling out the good timesDefaulters
Defaulting from club competitions creates problems and frustrations.
Depending on the circumstances, offenders may be suspended from
the next competition or tournament, or fined. A bowler who becomes
unavailable after entering a competition or tournament is expected to
find their own replacement – in consultation with their Skip and/or team.
This is not the responsibility of the Match or Tournament Committee.
Defaulting from Centre events causes more serious repercussions.
Championships/Club Events

You and Your Club
Coaching
The club has a number of qualified coaches whose services are available
to all club members. Regular coaching sessions are held by the club
coaches and members can also arrange for one-on-one sessions.
Contact Don Niven, Coaching Convenor, with any queries.
Practise
Members can use the greens for practise any time when games are not
being played and greens maintenance is not taking place. Please check
the Greenkeeper’ s notice board outside the implement shed to see
what greens are open, the direction of play, and if scrims are required.
Practise is not permitted when the red flag is flying.
Care of the Greens
Our two grass greens are a great resource and a lot of hard work goes
into keeping them at such a high standard. Please look after the greens
and refrain from doing anything that will cause damage to them or to
the surrounds.
Club Security
It is essential that all members adopt a responsible attitude to the security
of the clubrooms. If you are the last to leave, please ensure that all
windows are closed, doors are securely locked, and lights, heaters and
electrical appliances, especially heaters, are switched off. Unclaimed
property should be handed to the Secretary for safe keeping until the
owner is traced.
www.bowlsmilford.co.nz 17Clubroom Access Access to the clubrooms at times other than roll-ups, tournaments etc is restricted. Members who have need to gain access to the clubrooms on a regular basis should apply to the President or Secretary for the combination access code. The code is changed regularly throughout the season to ensure that security is maintained. Health & Safety The Club is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment. ICE (In Case of Emergency) Forms Please ensure you have updated this form and handed it to the Secretary. Your form will be held in a confidential file which can be accessed in case of emergency. Forms are available from the Secretary. Apparel Club shirts, caps, tracksuits and name badges may be ordered from Lyn Calver, phone 09 410 2475. Member’s Guests Members may bring a guest into the clubrooms, but the guest must be signed in by a member at all times. It is expected that the conditions of the club’s licence are strictly observed. Members are requested to ensure all guests are wearing a reasonable standard of dress. 18 MILFORD BOWLING CLUB | rolling out the good times
Resignations
It is a requirement that when leaving the club, a written notice of
resignation is handed to the Secretary or President of the club.
Junior Players
A junior player is one who has been an active playing member of our
club, or other clubs, for not more than five seasons, including the
current season.
Veteran Players
Full members who are 70 years of age or over on or before the end
of the current season will be eligible to enter the club’s veteran
competitions.
www.bowlsmilford.co.nz 19Social Activities Social activity is a very important part of the club programme and culture. Numerous events are held during the year and every Friday night from about 4.30pm onwards, all members and friends are invited to meet at the clubrooms for a social hour or two. This is the time when all the great shots and games are recounted and embellished and the world is put in order. We look forward to seeing you there. Etiquette
It is important that conventional courtesies and
standards by observed on the greens as well as in the
club house.
1. On tournament and club days, endeavour to arrive early enough to
assist with preparation for play (scrims, scoreboards, mats, jacks etc.)
2. Visiting players are your guests for the day and you should provide
good hospitality.
3. To save time and speed up the game players should have their next
bowl in their hands by the time their opposing player has delivered.
4. All players should remain stationery and quiet behind the mat and
do nothing to affect the concentration of the player delivering.
5. Do not walk up the rink right in front of the line of the player who
has just delivered the last bowl – before changing ends. The player
delivering the bowl should also assist by leaving the mat quickly to
save time.
6. All bowlers should participate in returning bowls promptly behind the
mat after the end has been declared-particularly in a time limit game.
7. Warn players on adjoining rinks that a drive is about to be played
on your rink. Try and stand to the side to ‘catch’ bowls flying out of
your rink.
8. Possession of the rink passes to your opponent once your bowl
comes to rest or has been become dead. At the changeover, Skips
and their ‘three’ (or middleman) who do not have possession of the
rink should be careful not to hang around discussing the head.
The opposing side has the mat.
www.bowlsmilford.co.nz 219. Is is unlawful as well as discourteous to encroach on adjoining rinks.
10. It is a courtesy of the ‘three’ (or middleman) of the team who is
playing first to place his Skip’s bowl on the mat before joining the
other players at changeover.
11. Some friendly banter with opposing players is OK and part of
the game but make sure you keep things sporting at all times.
If opposing players make it clear they like to play in silence, respect
their wishes.
12. Congratulate your opponents on good bowls or a well played bowl.
13. Always strive to enjoy your game – even when you lose.
It’s only a game!
14. Never disturb the bowls or the head before an opponent has a
chance to determine and agree the result.
15. Team members should always avoid crowding their director of the
head (i.e. their ‘three’ or middleman). Stay well behind the head, out
of the way, and be discreet in any communication with the director.
16. Good Skips encourage their teams and look to praise them.
17. Cell phones should never be seen or used on the green. Keep general
chatter until the tea break and don’t wander from rink to rink.
