Welcome to Southport Surf Life Saving Club
To all our returning members, it is great to see you back and thank you for your
continued support. To all the new members, we extend a warm welcome to you
and look forward to getting to know you throughout the season.
Orientation day this season will be Sunday 10 September 9 - 10:30am
We would like to see all new Nippers attend on this day as it
will be an opportunity to meet your Age Manager, ask questions and
to take a tour of the clubhouse and our equipment.
Come in casual dress as there will be no beach activities on this day.
Competition Evaluations will be held for returning members.
The Lifesaving Office will be open for uniforms 7:30 - 11:30am
The first day of Nippers for the 2017/18 season is Sunday 17 September.
The information contained in this handbook is designed to assist you through the 2017/18 season.
Throughout the handbook you will find information regarding the running of the Southport Surf Life
Saving Club Junior Activities (Nippers).
During your time with Southport Nippers, we aim to assist you with:
• Instruction in surf safety and surf awareness
• Lifesaving and first aid skill development
• Competitive sport activities
• Platform to senior patrolling duties
• To increase fitness and encourage an active lifestyle
• Enjoyable social activity for children and parents
The Nipper activities are controlled by the Junior Activities Committee (JAC). The JAC is elected
annually at the AGM and meets monthly to discuss current operations and future planning. All
members are welcome to contribute at these meetings. Meeting dates are listed in the Club calendar,
also found on the Club website.
Each age group has an Age Manager with one or two assistants. The Age Manager is responsible for
the education, training and organisation of the group during Nipper Sundays and at carnivals.
Parental involvement is key to the success of nippers.
Several avenues of participation are available. Training and skill development is
provided by the Club, to its members for all these activities, free of charge. Very few
opportunities such as this exist outside of the surf club environment.Club Membership

What to do on Nipper Sundays
There is a canteen at the Nipper Club where you can purchase BBQ items, hot and cold drinks etc.
from 7am.
• Plan to be at Nippers ready for Assembly at 8am
• Sign on with the Age Manager usually via a sign on sheet
• Age Managers will call a roll and mark off the attendance sheet
• There will be an age group bin to place towels and drink bottles in
• Nippers will rotate through activities (water, beach, games, education)
Safety measures to be undertaken to ensure Nipper safety at all times:
Children must stay with their Age Manager at all times unless coaches
take over for a specific activity. If children must leave their group to go
to the toilet etc., the Age Manager must be told prior to them leaving and
all children must be chaperoned to and from the Clubhouse.
No child is to enter the water unless authorised by the Age Manager. U6
and U7s must have a parent remain with the age group at all times.
All members must have a parent or guardian on the beach.
• At conclusion, children must be signed off the attendance roll by parents
• Upon signing off, Nippers must remove their caps
• Each age area is responsible for the pack down of their area
• Children are not to leave until collected by an adult
Many families stay for a burger at the Nipper Club after beach activities. This is a great social
experience for Nippers and parents to enjoy their new friends and get to know new people.
What to wear and bring
• Club age cap is compulsory
• Club high-vis pink rashies are compulsory - NO PINK RASHIE, NO WATER ACTIVITIES
• Club swimming costume
• Sunscreen and towel are essential
• Own water bottle and goggles
There is a Nipper Club cap unique to each age group from under 6 to under 10. Under 6 always wear
a cap with fluoro green inserts, from under 7 onwards the cap follows the Nipper group through the
years until under 11s. Under 11 through to under 14 wear the Club competition cap.
We encourage all members to wear the Club swimming costume.
Club swimwear is compulsory when competing at carnivals.Junior Activities Preliminary Pool Evaluation
All Nippers are placed into their age group according to their age on the 30th September of that year.
It is a pre-requisite that all Nippers have pool competency according to SLSQ guidelines for their
age group. Nippers cannot participate in activities until this is submitted.
Under 6* and Under 7
These age groups are designed as an educational program that gives Nippers a non-competitive
understanding of Surf Life Saving through fun and games, along with instructions on surf safety and
surf awareness. Members in these age groups only participate on a Sunday. *Southport only accepts
Nippers into the under 6 age group if the child already has a sibling in Nippers, an older sibling
starting with them, or an active lifesaving parent.
Under 8 to Under 14
These age groups are designed to give children and parents a firm understanding of beach rescues,
resuscitation and carnival events, along with preparation for senior level membership.
Preliminary & Competition Evaluations - under 8 & older
Once Nippers in these categories have completed their ‘Junior Activities
Preliminary Pool Evaluation’ and have become a member of the Club, they
then need to complete a Preliminary Evaluation (run-swim-run).
This is carried out within the first few weeks at the Club and involves a continuous effort of sand
running, freestyle swimming (wades for under 8) in the ocean and another run, which must be
completed competently. This ensures that all children can demonstrate a standard of competence to
enable preliminary levels of survival skills at a beach with conditions similar to what would be
experienced during weekly junior activities programs.
Any child who does not meet the required preliminary evaluation level, and have it recorded in
Surfguard, will only be able to participate in knee deep water activities until they can complete the
course. Swimming lessons are always highly recommended for children in Nippers.
Once a Preliminary Evaluation has successfully been completed, the child is eligible to continue
participating in all learning outcomes for their respective age award. Should the child wish to
compete in inter-club competition, they must complete the Junior Competition Evaluation.
It is parents’ responsibility to ensure your child is
signed off for Preliminary & Competition Evaluations.
Please attend on these days & encourage your child to participate.
Sufficient opportunity is provided for the evaluation, however all preliminary evaluations must be
completed, signed off and entered in Surfguard before the Christmas break. Continued participation
in any Nipper activities in the new year will be at the discretion of the age manager.Junior Activities Preliminary Skills Evaluation Chart

the abilities and interests of the children. Training sessions take place from June through to March.
The training program is advised in advance and changes from week to week depending on upcoming
events.

Junior Training Program 2017/18

improve their skills and fitness. Current training schedules are available from the club, can be viewed
on our website, Facebook pages or directly emailed to you on request.

* Rental boards - small boards only, racing Malibus for U14 members are the responsibility of the
individual. It is helpful to ask the age manager for guidance in procurement of the racing Malibu.
Suitable second hand boards are recommended for Nippers’ first boards; given physical
development of these age groups, the first board is usually only suitable for a limited time.
Surf Sports Competition
The Surf Sports program offers a wide range of competition events for all
ages culminating in the Queensland Junior State Titles every year.
If you are unsure about whether or not your child should be entered into
a carnival please speak to your Age Manager or Junior Team Manager.
Carnivals can be an exciting change from the normal Nipper day, but with
so many Clubs attending, it can be a daunting event for new Nippers.Carnival Information
• Most carnivals are held on the Gold Coast, some on the Sunshine Coast
• Under 8 - under 10 carnivals are usually held over one day
• Under 11 - under 14 carnivals can be either 1, 2 or 3 day events
• Club warm up is normally at 7am with marshalling at 7:45, carnival starting at 8am
• Most carnivals involve long hours so be prepared to be at the beach most of the day
Competitor Information
• Under 8 - under 14s who have completed their Beach and Competition Evaluations
• For Branch and State Titles, Nippers must have completed their Age Award
• Carnivals are divided into under 8 to under 10, and under 11 to under 14
How to enter
• For SLSQ carnivals an entry form will need to be completed approximately 2-3 weeks
prior and submitted before the closing date or your child may miss out
• It costs the Club per Nipper to enter a carnival but these costs are covered in your
membership fees. The Club does not get a refund if you don’t compete.
• There are some privately run carnivals which require entries to be submitted and paid for
by the individual.
If you register your child for a carnival and do not
attend it affects their team mates.
‘No shows’ will be expected to reimburse the Club for entry fees.
What to bring
• Southport tents are provided for our members and families
• You are more than welcome to bring your own umbrella/tent/chair and sit nearby
• You will require plenty of water and good nutritional food to last the whole day

Club Craft
• Foam boards are available to rent for under 9 - under 10s

• You are required to return any craft used to the tent immediately after your race
Team Selections
• Team selections are determined by a selection panel made up of Age Group Managers,
Team Manager and Coach
• Selections are made based on performance at previous carnivals, championship days,
Nipper days and training sessions
• Surf conditions and timetable are also considered
• Teams may include younger age group members if required to make up numbers. A
Nipper can only compete in their own age group or as a team member in the age group
one year senior.Carnivals and Events Club Champs There are three Nipper days throughout the season that are designated Club Championship days. Parental Involvement
Parents are encouraged to assist in the running of Nippers
as assistant age managers, carnival officials, water safety officers,
canteen helpers or part of the beach setup task force.
Beach Setup Task Force
• Responsible for the setup and pack down of equipment on Nipper days
• Assistance with this is rotated through the age groups - please respond directly to your
child’s age manager when the call for help goes out
• Depending on the amount of volunteers we have, you may be asked to help on a few
Nipper days and/or carnivals
Canteen Helpers
• Assistance in the canteen is required for the breakfast shift and at the conclusion of
Nippers beach activities
• Please let your child’s age manager know when you are able to help with this - canteen
duty is also rotated through the age groups
Carnival Officials
• Help with the running of carnivals by judging, marshalling competitors, presenting
medals, recording results or starting races
• You will need to complete a Level 1 Surf Official course - the theoretical component will
be held Saturday 14 October 9:00am - 2:00pm, with a requirement to attend two
carnivals as a probationary official to have the practical component completed.
• Please advise the Lifesaving Office if you are interested
Water Safety
• Water safety mainly spend their time monitoring Nippers in the water/shoreline on
Nipper days and/or at carnivals on either rescue boards or swimming with tubes/fins
• You need to have either a current Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion
• The next Bronze/SRC course commences on Wednesday 20 September 2017.
Age Managers and Assistants
• The Age Manager is responsible for the education, training and organisation of the
group during Nipper Sundays and at carnivals.
• Age managers complete an Age Managers and Observers Awards
• Please talk to members of the JAC or your child’s age manager if you’re interested in
becoming an assistant
These volunteers are required for specific activities, mid-week training,
surf carnivals and Nipper days, so it is of great importance that Southport
has a depth of personnel to call on during the Nipper program.Child and Youth Risk Management Strategy
Parental/Guardian Code of Conduct
• Remember that their child participate in Surf Life Saving for their own enjoyment
• Focus on their child’s efforts and performance rather than winning and losing
• Show appreciation for good performance by all participants
• Never ridicule or yell at their child or other children for making a mistake
• Respect officials decisions and teach their children to do likewise
• Not physically or verbally abuse or harass anyone associated with the activities
(e.g. coaches, officials, age managers, etc.)
• Be a positive role model for others
Working with Children Check
Southport SLSC is committed to protecting children from harm and promoting their wellbeing.
An important child protection initiative of the Surf Life Saving movement is the participation in the
Working with Children Check as set up by the Commission for Children and Young People. This
ensures all volunteers who work with children undergo a criminal history check and imposes
penalties on persons who fail to comply with the requirements of the Act. A blue plastic suitability
card is issued to the applicant and remains valid for 3 years. All volunteers and parents helping with
Nippers must apply for a blue card.
