Principals Message
Dear BVE Families,
It has been a fairly eventful year, but it seems we are an adaptable, resilient bunch! Now that June is here and the
thermometer is reaching past 30º , it is definitely feeling like summer is just around the corner. Thank you for helping us
make the school year as positive and “normal” as we all have!
As you’ll read on, this final school month is full of hands-
on and outdoor learning opportunities that take full
advantage of the beautiful BVE school grounds, and
nearby forests, trails and parks. Please be in touch if
you have any questions or concerns.
-Ariel McDowell, BVE Principal
Last Day and Year End Assembly
Note that the last day of school will be June 29th for
students. Student dismissal is at 12:30 on that day. A
year-end slideshow will be available for sharing in classes
this day, with a streamed version available on the BVE
website later on June 29th.
Grade 7 Year-end Trip and Celebration
The Grade 7 class will be moving on to RSS in September,
and to commemorate their Elementary accomplishments
and celebrate the next new beginning, there are some
special events for them. One Friday, June 25th, they will
all travel by bus very early in the morning to Sunnybrae.
There they will spend the day doing various camp
activities like horseback riding, climbing, archery, and
kayaking. The fun lasts well into the late evening, with
night games after dinner.
June 29th the Grade 7s will record short speeches to say
farewell. At 11:30, Grade 7 parents are invited to drive
(or ride or walk) through the BVE cul-de-sac, which will
be decorated in celebration. All of the Grade 7s will bethere for families to wave and honk and generally make a big deal of as you drive by. After the drive-by parade, Grade
7s will head to Queen Elizabeth park for cupcakes and refreshments before they are dismissed at 12:30.
Looking ahead to September 2021
The first day back for students after Summer break is Tuesday,
September 7th, and it will be a partial day to allow us time to
adjust any classes as necessary based on new enrolment, or
families moving. At this point it looks like we will have the
same number of classes (13). Due to changing enrolment
numbers and staffing processes we will be working on class
organizations and teaching assignments until the end of the
year. Tentative class lists are usually able to be posted the
evening before the first day of school, so on Monday,
September 6th this year.
BVE Parent Advisory Council and Yearbook
A dedicated group of BVE parents continues to work hard to finish
up a yearbook for the 2020-2021 year. Community donations and
PAC fundraising have made it possible for the PAC to offer one
yearbook FREE to every BVE student!. Many thanks to Allyn
Shillington, MariÉve Poirier-Payette, Elisabeth Harris and others for
making this memento for our students.
The PAC is also organizing a Subway lunch for the Primary and
Intermediate Sports Days, as well as watermelon for every student.
Our whole school is grateful for the creative ways the BVE PAC has found to do special things for us this year! The BVE
Parent Advisory Council (PAC) has their final meeting of this year on Monday, June 7th at 7pm via Teams. A link is on the
BVE website.
School supplies and agendas for 2021-2022
Begbie View Elementary School will again be doing a bulk purchase of school
supplies for 2021/2022. Bulk purchasing drastically reduces the cost of
supplies for families. Cost for supplies will be $30 per student, with a family
maximum cost of $60. All the necessary supplies will be here and in classrooms
in time for September startup, so there is no need for families to go out and
buy their own. Grade 1 to 7 students are also required to purchase an agenda
at a cost of $7.00. Total cost per student is $37 for supplies and agenda, due
the first week of
September.
Note that the bulk
order of supplies is not
mandatory; families
opt out of the school
supply program, and
may purchase their own supplies. Supply lists will be posted for
each grade on the BVE website in August.
Go by Bike Week
All this week we are getting ourselves to school by human
power! Go by bike, scooter, skateboard, unicycle, run or walk. If85% of the students in your class arrive by human power, your class
will earn a lap through the school hallways on your bike, scooter,
skateboard, rollerblades, etc. If you're unable to travel that
whole way, please ask to be dropped off at 8th street and walk
the remainder of the walk to school. We will celebrate by riding
our bikes, scooters, etc. through the school next Wednesday,
June 9th.
Student Bike Safety and Bike Rodeo
On Tuesday, June 1st we were grateful to RCMP Members who
came to lead Primary students through a biking on the road safety
workshop. Helmets and bikes were checked, and Members
reviewed the biking rules of the road.
Please discuss as a family our school safety expectations for bikes
and wheeled items:
(Bicycles,
Skateboards, Roller
Blades and
Scooters) RE EL OKE • GOLDEN • IN ERMERE • KIMBERLE • CRANBROOK • FERNIE• PAR OOD
• Bike racks are provided at designated areas at the school
and all students are encouraged to lock their bikes. Overflow
bikes may be locked to the school backstop or chainlink fencing.
Please do not lock your bike to the tetherball pole or to
playground equipment.
• Students may only be at the bike racks when they are
arriving, or leaving with their bicycle.
• Students are to carry their skateboards and roller blades
inside the school for safe storage during the day
• Bikes, scooters and skateboards must be walked, or carried
on school grounds. Roller blades may be worn on school grounds
when arriving, or departing.
Jump Rope
for Heart
Thank you to everyone who participated in Jump Rope for
Heart this year. We surpassed our fundraising goal by over
double, raising a whopping $2308.00 for the Heart and
Stroke Foundation! Mrs. McDowell and Ms. Langille were
our big motivators this year as they agreed to be duct
taped to the wall if we raised $2000.00. Thank you for
being such great sports ladies!
Our Jump Day was a huge success thanks to our amazing
grade 7 leaders at each station. Students did a great jobparticipating in an hour straight of jumping, hopping, hooping and dancing. Well done everyone!
All Sorts of Sports at Begbie View
Sports days June 2nd and 3rd
Please ensure your child comes with plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat and/or sunglasses for their Sports Day.
Primary (Downstairs) classes are looking forward to their Sports Day tomorrow, June 2nd from 8:45 – 11:50. Students will
go to each sports day station with their class to complete a variety of fun events.
Intermediate (Upstairs) classes will do Sports Day June 3rd at the Centennial Track. Each grade will go down to the Track
at the allotted time. Events will include 800 and 400m run, long jump, high jump, and shot put. Individual classes will also
run 100m and 200m events. Ribbons are awarded for first to fourth place finishers. Good luck, everyone!
Grade 6 Fun Bike Race – Fundraiser – KIVA
After learning about poverty and inequality, Mr. Evans and Ms. Bieniada’s class decided to raise funds for
a charity that helps people all around the world. After choosing Kiva as the beneficiary, they competed in a
fun ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitch contest to share and compare their ideas. The celebrity judges chose “Breaking
the Cycle”, a bike race/rally where students brought in donations. Each class was invited to complete the
challenging course. The families of BVE proved to be very generous and the class was thrilled to raise
$1255.55 in student donations!
Prizes were awarded by random draw and we’d like to thank the following people and businesses for their
wonderful support:
Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Revy Outdoors, Flowt, Mica Heli Skiing, Save on Foods, Society Snow
and Skate, Conversations Coffee House, Mrs. Cathy Evans, Mr. Peter Neilsen, Mr. Kevin Manuel.
The class will now use the Kiva Foundation to provide microloans to individuals around the world. As those
loans are paid back, money will be reinvested.
The energy, excitement, maturity, and compassion the students have demonstrated during this project has
been on display for many in the school to see. It’s clear the students are proud of themselves for all the hard
work, and perhaps their teachers are even more proud.
Shred-hers Mountain Bike Club
The Shred-hers Mountain Bike Club is well underwy, with between 7-10 girls participating weekly. They have
been meeting every Thursday after school. A great big thanks to Ms. Holmes and Tantrum and the local biking
community for making this fantastic program available to us.
B.V.E. Art Club
A great big thanks to Ms. Wolfs, Ms Ford and Mr. Becker for supervising and being really creative for our
students.
Session 3 (May 10th – June 18th)
• Tuesdays - Intermediate (Ms. Floyd’s Grade 4 class and Ms. Wall’s Grade 3/4 class)
• Thursdays - Primary (Mrs. Evans Grade 1 class)

parent and local Usborne representative Lisa Astra for all her hard work. It’s that time already! All library books are due back to the library by Friday, June 4th so
we can start our annual inventory and maintenance. There is still lots of reading to be
done with classroom libraries and the public library though – don’t despair!

Begbie View Summer Reading Challenge: Creative and Unusual Reading Nooks
Over the summer, take a picture or make a drawing of an unusual place, or creative
way, that you read a book. It could be upside down on a swing, on a mountain top, in a
costume with all your stuffies, in a boat…. The sky is the limit! When we are back in
September we’ll create a mosaic of photos and pictures of where we read this summer!
Digital Media Awareness:Keeping a Balanced Media Diet is a good way to keep kids active and healthy
this summer. The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends that children between the ages of 5 and 18
have no more than 2 hours a day of screen time. Some helpful tips to help parents manage this can be
found at: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/start-your-summer-screen-time-rules-now
