• In the first instance refer students to us if they
have lost their username or password.
• We recommend they apply if unsure.
• They can always tick the box to defer if they
wish to take a gap year.
• We think ABB will be the ‘line in the sand’

How to Apply
• The only way to apply is online, once students register,
UCAS provide own username and password. Students
  must validate their email address.

• Students can re-enter and change details at any time up
to the point they press “pay/send.” Once sent only
actually sent to school and we can send it back within a
short space of time and if there are errors.

• Cost this year is £23; paid online
The Application
• Information on how to complete the application will be
passed to students in core time and is available in the
  Guide to Applying for University.

• There is also a separate Guide to Writing your Personal
Statement which students will need to be working
through. Students will also gain support from their
tutors and the Sixth Form team.

• This is something which they cannot complete at the last
  minute.
Institution/Course Choices
• There is a maximum of 5 Choices, (medical, vet,
  dentistry only 4 + 1 extra).
• Can select deferred entry, to live at home etc.

• Please support students to only choose universities to
which they will fulfil the entry criteria. You can ask staff
what they feel might be correct next week at the PSCE.
We inform students what predicted grades they have if
we feel they are way off the mark. Sometimes we will
also contact the parents if we feel there is ‘risk’ involved.
UCAS Support
• UCAS are in the middle of launching a range of
  new services to support students.

• This includes My UCAS which will be soon
available, where students can save their
  favourite institutions, search preferences and
  receive updates relevant to them.

• There is also a new way of course searching
Remember
• We check each form three times. When the student
presses the send button, it doesn’t go then – it goes to us.
Only when we press send does it eventually go.

• Often students get their forms sent back more than once.
If you are concerned about delays it is often because we
have sent the form back to the student and they haven’t
  noticed / altered the form!
References and Predicted Grades
• References are then attached with predicted grades and
we can add notes for those with special circumstances.

• The reference is there to comment on academic
achievement and potential, suitability and motivation.
We always write positive references, but if grades are
poor we cannot over inflate them but we will try to
explain why things are the way they are.

• Students must speak to their subject teachers about
  realistic applications.
• Any concerns contact us.
Responding to offers
• Have to have 1 firm and 1 insurance choice.
• Make sure the insurance choice is one they
are prepared to go to plus is also realistic.
• Many students will have all 5 offers back by
  February.
• The deadline to respond to offers is in May
  2015.
Finance
• Universities and colleges can charge tuition fees
  of up to £9,000
• Tuition Fee Loans have gone up to cover the
  higher fees
• Part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee
Loan (replacing grants) for the first time
• Students don’t start repaying loan until they earn
  £21,000 (up from £15,000)
• Far more scholarships/bursaries for students to
  research
• Mainly affecting those
Finance applying for university
          • Can also receive finance
            for Foundation Degrees
            and college where
            necessary; for some
            drama music
            institutions can be more
            complicated.
          • Direct.Gov has lots of
            information and Student
            Loans Company has
            various estimation tools
Finance
• More information about Finance in the Guide to
  funding your way through university

• Students had a talk this week on student finance
in assembly and there will be more on this in the
  Parent Forum in Term 3.
Other Pathways
• Due to the nature of UCAS deadlines it can
appear at the start of the year very university
  focused.
• Other opportunities are explored but these are
often addressed on a more individual basis
  regarding applications etc.
• 2 later parent forum are designed for follow-up
after UCAS / Non-university applications eg on
  an individual basis.
Employment/Apprenticeships
• Students are supported and encouraged to have CV’s and
applications checked by tutors, Sixth Form team.

• Can arrange practice interviews and help with job
  hunting.

• Reality of not being many suitable jobs and that they are
competing with so many to gain employment.

• Internships at places like Barclays etc advertise in
January – March again an online system. Each has
  different requirements.
Further Education and College
• Some students find they have to complete a vocational
course to follow their career path.

• Others need to complete level 3 in their subject to move
  up to university (Art Foundation).

• Local colleges offer foundation degree courses (cheaper
than university – must be applied for via UCAS)

• Students will be supported if they want to find college
level courses, usually on a more individual basis.
Further Education and College
• AS long as they enrol on a college course (by beginning
of Sept 2015) and are not yet 19 there are no fees for the
  course.
• Applications are completed by the student online, many
courses interview students, some have additional
  literacy/numeracy tests and school reference.

• Applications can usually be accepted until May/June
  time.
Other
• Gap Year
• Distance Learning – Open University etc.
• Part-time study options

• Supporting all students when their career
aspirations are so different can be a challenge.
  Therefore there is significant individual
support for those students who choose to access
  this.
Final Thoughts…
• UCAS deadlines drawing closer.
• Parents evening 2 weeks time.
• Contact us if at all unsure.
• Try not to book holidays for the last week of June
(Ball) and third Thursday of August (Results day)
• Good Luck!
