Foreword
Dear All,

The pandemic we have lived with for so long has posed new challenges
in our lives in so many different ways. Indeed, the academic year
which is slowly coming to a close has witnessed a radical departure
from our previous way of doing things, as we have sought avenues
for mitigating the ill-effects such a reality has brought along with it.
COVID-19 has led us to change structures and frameworks and
source novel ways of dealing with situations which often required us
to ‘think outside the box’. Our goal of providing quality education and
the maintaining of good standards has remained, however, undented.
Our experience so far has undoubtedly shown that the whole staff
has risen to the challenges imposed upon it. We could even add that
in some respects, new practices forced upon us by the pandemic
have now become an inherent part of our very own system here at
Sixth Form.

Please pay attention to all details related to our entry requirements,
taking note of all those applicable to your particular case. We strongly
believe in the holistic development of our students and have thus
continued to embrace a Prospectus which combines the co-curricular
sphere with the curricular and academic. The updated Prospectus
takes into account the new context we are living in. We have
ascertained we leave none by the wayside.

As one of Gozo’s leading pre-tertiary institutions, we retain our pledge
to continue to serve as a bridge to tertiary education, thereby helping
all those who pass through our doors to follow their dream.

A heartfelt note of gratitude is due to all stakeholders at Sixth Form
for their uncompromising belief and commitment to the underpinning
values we hold most at heart.

I wish you all a year full of success, God’s blessing and good health.

Our Library staff would like to acquaint the readers with services
rendered in the recently upgraded library of Sir Michelangelo Refalo
Sixth Form.

Students and teachers are urged to make full use of the library for
study and research in peace. One can also make use of computers,
borrow books and skim through magazines and journals.

Our library collection is catalogued online, and books can be
searched by visiting the website maltalibraries.gov.mt under Search
the Public Libraries Catalogue. We are now members of the Malta
Libraries entity and for actual borrowing of books, one needs to have
a valid Membership Card (Karta ta’ Sħubija). With the Libby App, one

One of our Institute’s library services is to help students acquire new
and used textbooks at the best competitive prices on the market.
This ensures that each student will have own textbooks at the start
of the term. In collaboration with various subject teachers, the library
bookshop offers students different study packs relevant to their
course of studies. The 2021 – 2023 Students’ Textbook List can
be viewed at our Institute’s website smarsf.edu.mt . First and second
year students, who have finished courses at our Institute, can usually
sell their used textbooks to the Institute library bookshop, only if still

██Category B:
        Non-Formal Award in Mindfulness:

        Coping under pressure and improving
the quality of life (MQF Level 3)

     Course description

Mindfulness means training the mind to focus on the present moment
so as to disengage from the constant mental thoughts that distract
us or pull us into negative thinking, worrying about the future or the
past, ruminating about a problem or dwelling on anxious thoughts.
Mindfulness adopts meditation practices that have been proven to
help calm stress, tension, and anxiety. This is the formal aspect
of mindfulness practice. However, mindfulness is not only about
meditation. Whoever finds meditation unbearable can still benefit
from various informal mindfulness exercises that are incorporated
into daily living. For example, we can move, clean, wash, eat or
communicate in a mindful way simply by shifting our mental focus to the
actual present moment beyond our thoughts. This requires constant
mental training and the will and discipline to live life differently. Living
mindfully renders us more alert to whatever life offers right now. We
can appreciate the beauty of our surroundings with a mind clear from
thoughts usually fogging up our vision, we can increase our patience,
endurance, and resilience in difficult times, we can care for ourselves
when suffering or dealing with pain, we can empathise with others
and be more self-compassionate. Mindfulness does not eliminate
thoughts or solve our problems but, with constant practice, it gives us
the skills to manage them better. We are better able to live instead of
feeling overwhelmed by our efforts to survive.

     Course learning outcomes

     Participants will be able to:
        1. Focus on the present moment without dwelling on negative
        thoughts;
        2. Reduce anxiety levels by intentional awareness and correct
        breathing;
        3. Be more compassionate to self and emotionally supportive to
38      others;
4. Manage physical pain by minimising psychological or
   emotional suffering;
   5. Achieve more satisfaction in life by full immersion in the
   present moment.

Suitable for:

This non-academic course addresses 16+ students who are
interested in calming their minds and coping positively with short-
term or prolonged stress. The course is especially ideal for students
so they can learn how to focus on their studies and cope with exam
anxiety. Psychology students can take this course as part of their
training. Participants will develop a deep understanding of their
reactions to stress and how this can be positively transformed so as
to respond in a healthier manner to unwelcome thoughts, mental or
physical pain or difficult environmental circumstances.

                                                                        39
Course structure

This short course of 2 hours weekly for a total of 25 hours is certified
with 1 ECTS at MQF Level 3 (Non-Formal). The course follows the
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for Adults syllabus
and the Mindfulness in Education (MiE) syllabus for adolescents
established by the UK-based EFT & Mindfulness Centre. This
course integrates mindfulness meditation and other mindfulness
techniques while proving how, scientifically, such techniques calm
down the stress signals at a neurological and physical level. The
course involves hands-on practice which requires students to engage
in various exercises during every session as well as at home daily. A
final individual presentation of each student’s project concludes the
course. The course is offered twice in an academic year. Whoever
misses a session can attend that session in the next available course
and still be certified. The course will be delivered in English/Maltese
     depending on the group.

     Course certification

No particular prior experience or qualifications are needed for
participating in this course except a strong commitment for
continuous class and home practice. Certification is attained by
attendance, completion of self-reflection writing tasks, and a final
project consisting of a series of reflective questions to answer and
present in a group discussion. A final certificate will be issued
by the DQSE which recognises Sir M. A. Refalo Sixth Form as
the course provider in collaboration with the EFT & Mindfulness
Centre. Accumulated training hours also count towards workers’
Continuous Professional Development. This certificate also serves
for progression to Mindfulness Practitioner and Trainer Levels with
     the EFT & Mindfulness Centre.

     Teacher/trainer

The course is delivered by a Teacher at Sir M. A. Refalo Sixth Form
who is certified and accredited by the EFT & Mindfulness Centre as
     a Mindfulness Trainer.

era of increasing global migration, educational institutions around
the globe are increasingly becoming multi-ethnic, multi-national,
culturally diverse, or, more commonly, multicultural. Studies are
showing that physical contact between students with different
national and ethnic backgrounds does not automatically translate
into meaningful contact. If the contact between students of different
national and ethnic backgrounds is not given specialised attention, an
‘us and them’ relation tends to develop leading to group segregation.
Cultural enrichment is better served through integration rather than
segregation. This course follows a basic principle in intercultural
studies – the importance of dialogue as the basis of integration.

                                                                         43
Aims

      • To bring together students with different national and ethnic
backgrounds in a safe space open for dialogue.
      • To increase knowledge of different ways of life (cultures) around
the globe through discussion and critical thinking.
      • To develop a greater ability among students to live and function
with individuals of a different cultural background in a group.
      • To improve soft skills including communicative competence,
self-confidence, and working in a team.

     Programme

      • Participants will be working individually and in groups, both on
          campus and outside.
      • One or more group activities relating to the respective cultures
of students will be organised with the input of the participants
          themselves.
      • Participants will be asked to compile a portfolio.
      • Students undertaking the MATSEC course can fulfil the
requirement of the Systems of Knowledge project by participating
          in this course.

Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a Non-
Formal qualification at MQF Level 3.

NSTF Mini European Assembly
In a nutshell, the Mini European Assembly is a simulation of The
Council of Europe where students are granted the opportunity to
represent different European countries and discuss a vast array of
topics that have a high degree of relevance on a European level.
The delegates must conduct their research and debate such topics
through the political perspective of the European country they would
be representing. Each topic is discussed during an informal Committee
Session and subsequently during a formal Plenary Session, and for
every topic there needs to be a delegation that prepares the Report
and another one that puts forward the Resolutions. Needless to
point out, the MEA is a very fruitful experience to participants, since
it equips them with the necessary tools that will prove to be great
assets in their future careers and professions.

Students receive a certificate of participation upon completion of the
programme.

                                                                          47
NSTF Science Forum
The Mission of the NSTF Science Forum is to generate awareness
and interest amongst students at all education levels of the nation
in the importance of science and scientific research to one’s daily
life and to experience and promote science out of the classroom
through hands-on projects, exhibitions, experimentation, research
and discussion from both a scientific and ethical perspective.

Students receive a certificate of participation after concluding this
     programme.

this experience. Students are given the opportunity to develop a
number of soft skills such as team building, time management, and risk

MEP Gozo
The Model European Parliament (MEP) is an opportunity for
Maltese students aged 16-19 to take part as Maltese delegates
during international MEP sessions which are held every 6 months in
different European countries. MEP is a simulation of the European
Parliament with participating delegates organised in committees
that draft resolutions which are then presented for approval during a
General Assembly. However, MEP is much more than this. During
the week that students spend abroad they have time to immerse
themselves in an intercultural environment that comes from sharing
living quarters with other students hailing from over 25 countries,
make new friends, and enjoy evenings that are fun filled with different
activities. Students who experience MEP all express regret when
the sessions are over and state that they would be interested to go
again. In fact, this opportunity is possible, since the best delegates
are chosen for subsequent sessions as Committee Presidents, a
role which affords them the possibility of experiencing the organising
side of MEP. Agenzija Zghazagh, the body which co-ordinates this
project, organises national MEP sessions which include training for
interested students, with the best ones, being offered the opportunity
to represent Malta.

Agenzija Zghazagh also subsides the cost of travelling since
participating students only pay a nominal fee to attend. This means
that MEP is possible for all students whatever their socio-economic
background. Students interested in taking part in MEP are kindly
asked to get in touch with Agenzija Zghazagh for more information
about the next MEP session. There are no minimum requirements to
join MEP, although being able to communicate in English is definitely
an asset. Should there be enough students from Gozo who are
interested in taking part, a session in Gozo will be organised.

Participating students receive a certificate.

                                                                          51
Euroscola
Euroscola enables 16-18-year-old students to experience what
it means to be a Member of the European Parliament and better
     understand the EU.

Each year Euroscola welcomes thousands of students aged between
16 to 18 years old from all 28 European Union Members States to
spend a day in Strasbourg and work as Members of the European
Parliament. Students experience a day as a MEP, engaging in the EU
decision-making through debates in the hemicycle, negotiations with
their colleagues, voting and adopting resolutions on topical European
issues. It gives students the opportunity to interact and exchange
information in a foreign language and also highlights the importance
of cross-cultural cooperation. Furthermore, students are given the
possibility to introduce their school and the region where they come
from, which provides for greater diversity and enriches the cultural
     dialogue.

Only 24 students are chosen to take part in Eurscola. Interested
students who apply are required to sit for an examination which is
held at our Institute. Successful candidates get an important subsidy
towards the cost of their journey and accommodation in Strasbourg.
