get to know us better as a church family. In any case, come January 26, please feel free to invite others to
join us for worship, a fellowship meal, and even our annual congregational meeting. And I hope that all
our present members can and will be there for this special occasion.
Another special occasion in the life of our church is coming up two weeks before the annual
congregational meeting. During worship on Sunday, January 12, we will be ordaining Sally Todd as a
ruling elder for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and we will be installing Sally, together with Tom
Atchley and Jane Anne Spikes (who already are ordained ruling elders), into service on our session as
members of the class of 2022. At that time, Marian Dyer and Nancy Qualls will rotate off the session.
Both Marian and Nancy have served actively on session for each of the past six years, which is the
maximum number of years in succession that one can serve on session in the PCUSA. A heartfelt thanks
goes out to the two of them for the important contributions they have made to the session=s work of
leading our congregational effort to become the church that God is calling us at this time to be. Along,
I’m sure, with everyone else who has served on session with Marian and Nancy, I am deeply grateful for
their work. The session=s work is important. And the two of them have done it gladly, graciously, and
with much love for Christ=s church and for those the church is here to serve.

                                            Friday Bible Study
The winter/spring session of Friday Bible Study will begin on Friday, January 17, and will run for 12
sessions. Dr. David Dyer is teaching. This session is on The Gospel According to Luke. It is always a
delight to have Dr. Dyer teach and we are excited that Dr. Dyer feels well enough to teach. Come at 9:30
a.m. for refreshments and fellowship, with lesson from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Bring a friend and join the
Friday Bible Study.

                               Annual Meeting & Potluck/Fellowship Meal
The session has called for the Annual Meeting of our congregation to be held following worship on
Sunday, January 26, in conjunction with that day’s fellowship meal. At this meeting, we will hear session
reports regarding the year gone by and prospects for the year ahead; we will vote on the financial
compensation paid to our minister; and the floor will be open for members to share insights and/or raise
questions regarding any and all aspects of our life and work together as a church. All are encouraged to
be in attendance. Visitors are welcome to join us too!

                                        Reaching Our Church Staff
Regular church office hours are Mondays through Fridays, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The office phone
number is
663-8361. If you call during regular office hours and we are either temporarily away from the office or
already on the telephone, you will get the voice mail. Please leave a message and we will return your call.
Now that you know how and when and where to reach our church staff, do stay in touch!
If you do come by the church during normal office hours, we “buzz” you in. This means that you must
“press” the intercom on the Walnut Street side of the church. We have cameras set up in various areas on
the outside of the church, especially at the Walnut Street door. If after you “press the buzzer”, and are
asked “May we Help You?”, this is an indication that we cannot see you. Please do not respond “It’s me”,
or “let me in”, we do not let anyone in the church unless we know who it is. So please identify yourself
when asked.

                                     “Radical Fringe” Discussion Class
A bi-monthly discussion class normally meets on the 1st and 3rd Wed. of every month, at 11:30 a.m. in the
Adult Sunday School Classroom. In January, they will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. The next
meeting is set for Wednesday, January 8. They will be viewing the second part of “Paul, The Apostle of
Christ”. After January, the classes will resume its normal schedule of the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each
month. The class is open to all! Bring a sack lunch, feel free to invite others, and come be part of this
new adventure.

                                            Winter Weather Policy
If, in the event of inclement weather this year, the decision should be made not to open the church, we
will do four things: we will notify each of the local television stations for postings on their respective
winter closings broadcasts; we will modify the message on the church voice mail system to indicate that
we won’t be open; we will e-mail all of our members; and we will put an announcement on our FaceBook
page. So, if you need into the church on an icy or snowy winter’s day, please call first and/or check the
local television broadcasts of winter closings.

                                            The PHPC Choir
The choir practices from 7:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings and at 10:15 a.m. every Sunday
morning in the choir room. If you would like to join our choir, please just show up at the church at the
practice time. New choir members are always welcome.

                                              Sunday School
Sunday School meets Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:15. Youth meet in the classroom at the end of
the downstairs hallway. The adult class meets in the upstairs classroom between the parlor and the choir
room.
The youth class teachers are Marian Dyer and LaWanda Harris. The adult class ordinarily is led by Ruskin
Falls. On the first Sunday of each month and sometimes on other Sundays, one of the adult class=s other
participants serves as teacher, leading the class in a discussion of a topic or subject matter of particular
interest to him or her. Serving as teachers the next two months in addition to Ruskin are: on January 5,
Bill May; and on February 2, Jane Moore.
Our Sunday School presentations and discussions are inquiring, instructive, edifying, and thought-
provoking. New and different voices are always a welcome part of the conversation. If you’re not already
participating, give thought to joining the conversation!
Visitors to our Sunday School classes are always welcome. Come check us out!

In the narthex you will find the “Food Manger,” through which we fill our church’s food pantry and strive
to help those in our community whose home pantries are too meager for their family’s needs. You are
invited, Sundays (or any other day!) to contribute non-perishable goods to this cause. Monetary gifts are
also appreciated. Please label your check “food pantry”. Also personal items such as toothpaste,
toothbrushes, bar soap, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper, etc. are needed and appreciated. A suggestion
list can be found in the manger or in the church office.

                                                 Stewpot
The 3rd Tuesday of every month is Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church day at Stewpot. For those of you
that don’t know what Stewpot is, Stewpot is based out of 1st Presbyterian Church in downtown Little
Rock. This is where a hot meal is served at noon Monday through Friday to those that are hungry. Right
now, there are 5 from PHPC that cook/serve on our day and we have 7 as our team. Ideally, we need
10-12 on a team. If you would like to volunteer an estimated 3-4 hours on the 3rd Tuesday of every
month to feed the hungry, please contact Jane Anne in the church office. We can always use extra hands.

                                       Presbytery of Arkansas
The Stated Meeting of the Presbytery of Arkansas will start on Friday, March 6 and go through Saturday,
March 7. This meeting will be at Lyon College in Batesville, AR.

                                        Stated Session Meetings
The stated session meetings are scheduled for the 3rd Sunday of each month, at noon in room 303. The
next two stated meetings are Sunday, January 20, and Sunday, February 16.

Hillcrest Community Friday Noon Lenten Services, 2020
The Hillcrest Community Friday Noon Lenten Services will begin on Friday, February 28. Watch the
Sunday announcements for the complete schedule. The service begins at noon, followed with a light
lunch provided by the host church. The lunch is free, but each church asks for a donation to offset the
cost of the meal.

Funding the Work We’re Here to Do
Unless otherwise designated, money given to our church is placed in what we call the General Fund,
through which we cover our regular operating and mission expenses. We also have three special funds
through which we fund our work. They are: the Food Pantry, for helping to feed hungry families in our
community; the Audie Lee Jones Ministry Fund, for helping people in financial crisis toward courage,
hope, and new opportunity; and the Building Fund, for tending to our building, grounds, and furnishings
beyond regular upkeep and maintenance. To donate to these special funds, simply note on your check or envelope
the fund you are giving to.
