Description:
What: Queer I Am Summit
When: Friday, October 26th – Saturday, October 27th, 2018
Where: South Puget Sound Community College, Olympia, WA
Queer I Am is a two-day summit that aims to create a liberating space engaging Queer individuals and their many
communities in developing their sense of belonging and pride in Queer culture and community.
About the Summit
History:
This Summit has been a collaborative project of regional colleges, community organizations, educators, and
organizers. We are proud to invite you to join us in a grassroots summit by the people for the people!
Summit Values:
          Building community through liberation and celebration of queer culture.
          Providing spaces for safety, healing, and growth.
          Fostering accessibility for diverse needs and levels of experience.
          Centering voices and experiences of Queer and Trans People of Color.
          Emphasizing solidarity amongst our queer cultural differences to develop community.
Who can attend?
Any Highline students can attend this summit. You do not have to identify as LGBTQIA in order to be considered. Everyone
is welcome! While this summit is open for all students, the selections committee will prioritize students who identify as
LGBTQIA or questioning individuals.
Do I need to pay to attend?
No costs – FREE to attend! Highline will cover the costs for registration, transportation, and meals.

DISCLAIMER: If accepted and unable to attend the summit, you will be responsible for $50 to cover a portion of summit
expenses.

Highline College recognizes the importance of confidentiality and asks all participants to honor that anything shared at the
Summit is kept confidential. While the feeling of safety is an individual experience, the Queer I am Summit’s goal is to
create a safe environment for all attendees and Highline College strives to ensure the safety of all individuals. It is part of
the expectation to attend this summit, that all participants understands the importance of respect and each individual’s
process of their identity.

MANDATORY Pre-Departure Meetings:
Students will be required to attend 1 pre-departure session (Mandatory):

Friday, October 12th – 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Monday, October 15th – 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Helpful Definitions

 Sexual Orientation: the type of sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction one feels for others, often labeled
 based on the gender relationship between the person and the people they are attracted to

 Straight/Heterosexual: a man or woman who is attracted to people of the other binary gender than themselves

 Gay: A man whose primary sexual, romantic, physical, and emotional attractions are to other men

 Lesbian: A woman whose primary sexual, romantic, physical, and emotional attractions are to other women

 Bisexual: A person who has a sexual, romantic, physical, and emotional attraction to both men and women

 Pansexual: a person who experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction for members of all gender
 identities/expressions

 Asexual: a person who generally does not experience sexual attraction (or very little) to any group of people.

 Queer: a) attracted to people of many genders; b) self-identity label for people who feel they do not fit cultural norms
 for sexual orientation and/or gender identity; c) sometimes used as an umbrella term for all people with non-
 heterosexual sexual orientations; d) historically, a derogatory term-its use today are is welcome by some and unwelcome
 by others

 Questioning: the process of exploring one's own sexual orientation, investigating influences that may come from their
 family, religious upbringing, and internal motivations

 Gender Identity: the internal perception of an individual’s gender, and how they label themselves

 Transgender: a blanket term used to describe all people who are not cisgender

 Cisgender: term for people with their gender identity matching the biological sex they were assigned at birth.

 Genderqueer/Genderfluid: (1) a blanket term used to describe people whose gender falls outside of the gender
 binary; (2) a person who identifies as both a man and a woman, or as neither a man nor a woman

 Two-Spirit: a term traditionally used by Native American people to recognize individuals who possess qualities or fulfill
 roles of both genders

 Biological sex: the physical anatomy and gendered hormones one is born with, generally described as male,
 female, or intersex, and often confused with gender

 Male: a person with a specific set of sexual anatomy (e.g., 46, XY phenotype, penis, testis, higher levels of
 testosterone, coarse body hair, facial hair) pursuant to this label

 Female: a person with a specific set of sexual anatomy (e.g., 46, XX phenotype, vagina, ovaries, uterus, breasts,
 higher levels of estrogen, fine body hair) pursuant to this label

 Intersex: a person with a set of sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit within the labels of female or male (e.g., 47, XXY
 phenotype, uterus, and penis)

 LGBTQIA: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual
