President’s Post from the desk of Tim Capp Shows are back up and running and it is great to see that most are reporting increased numbers of competitors and spectators in attendance. Earlier this year I had the pleasure of attending and opening a very successful Goulburn Show and then again in April an equally successful Show at Maclean with all attendees in high spirits. I was also at Dubbo in the cattle rings on day one of their show and from reports I have heard days two and three were a great success. I attended the Sydney Royal Easter show on most days catching up with ASC Directors, RAS Councillors and staff, and many members of our Shows from around the State. As ASC President I was one of the Judges for the Rural Achiever Competition which I found quite a difficult job with the calibre of Rural Achievers but in the end very rewarding spending time with these inspiring young people. Well done to the 2020 Rural Achiever Dione Howard. Congratulations to The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Jessica Neale from Cootamundra, first runner-up Stephanie Ferguson from Bathurst and second runner-up Kate Webster from Wagga Wagga. It was good to see all our Young Judges competitions were successfully run at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and now our State winners go on to compete at the Nationals to be held at the EKKA in August. Planning is underway for the Young Judges Workshop which will be held in Dubbo on the 24th and 25th July to help prepare our State winners for the Nationals. Plans are also underway for the State and National Young Judging Competitions to be held at the 2022 Royal Easter Show. Well done to Group 5 for being awarded the Geoff Mayo Shield for 2021. The ASC Board meeting and AGM were held at the Bathurst RSL and via Zoom at the end of May. It was lovely to see some of our Members. The ASC State Conference planned for Saturday June 19 is proceeding well. You will have received an email and details are on our website. The conference is free, and you must register to attend. I would encourage you to make a day of it and attend one of the ten locations around the state. Not only will you be part of the State Conference and inspired by State and International speakers, but you can also mix with your local Show members and compare notes face to face. Morning tea and lunch will be provided by the ASC and I am sure there will be some time to socialise afterwards. Congratulations to all the ASC Award nominees and finalists. The finalists have been notified with the winners announced at the State Conference. Thanks to all the show volunteers who spent time completing the annual insurance declarations, so that the group insurance quote can be sourced. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into this process. It does make a difference when negotiating our insurance for the coming year. Currently the ASC Board is working on a Child Safe Policy that can be used by all our member Shows. The ASC is committed to ensuring a safe environment for children and more on this subject will be on the agenda at the State Conference later this month. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the State Conference, either in person or virtually. Meanwhile stay diligent and Covid Safe. ASC Showgirl Dinner On Tuesday 6th April the annual Showgirl dinner was held at the North Ryde Golf Club. It was the first time that the dinner has been held at the Golf Club and wonderful that over 70 guests were able to attend and enjoy the lovely venue. Among the guests were RAS President Mr Michael Millner and his wife Jenny, CEO Mr Brock Gilmour and Showgirl Councillor Susan Wakeford. PSC Insurance sponsor the Showgirl Zone Finals and Phil Lemieux and Scott Slingo attended with Phil addressing the guests at the beginning of the evening. Throughout the evening there was a Q & A session where ASC President Mr Tim Capp asked each of the State Finalists a few questions. We learnt that a lot can change in twelve months, some of the Showgirls had finished degrees and changed career paths and one is expecting her first child. It was lovely meeting and becoming more familiar with the 15 State Finalists and their families. Unfortunately Livinia Evans representing Cooma and Zone 3 was unable to attend due to an accident and subsequent surgery. We wish Livinia a speedy recovery. NSW and Queensland are the only two States who hold a Showgirl Competition. Each year through an exchange program between NSW and Queensland the Showgirl from Queensland attends Sydney Royal and the Land Sydney Royal Showgirl attends the EKKA in August. We were priviledged Claire Webb could attend the dinner. Claire spoke of her time as the 2019 Queensland Country Life Miss Showgirl. Stephanie Clancy the 2019 Land Sydney Royal Showgirl congratulated the 15 Showgirl State Finalists. During ASC Vice President and Chairman of the Showgirl Committee Jill Chapman’s closing address she thanked all the sponsors and wished the Finalists all the very best for their time in Sydney. The Land has been a major sponsor of the Showgirl Competition for many years. Thank you to Matt De La Hunty and Andrew Norris from The Land for joining us, and the articles and photos in The Land paper showcasing the event. How to Check a Certificate of Currency It is important to check each business entering your Showground has public liability insurance. It is pertinent that Show Societies check third party Certificate of Currency as some insurers will not be renewing insurance cover for amusement rides in the current market. A Certificate of Currency provides proof. Please check the items in red when checking a third party’s Certificate of Currency. If any clarification is required, please contact Jasmine - asc.admin@ascofnsw.org.au Agriculture House Tel: 1 800 025 387 or 02 9879 6777 PO Box 1047 Fax: 02 9879 6043 HUNTERS HILL NSW 2110 Email: nicky.seeto@ascofnsw.org.au Web: www.agshowsnsw.org.au Page | 6

Planning is underway for the Young Judges Workshop which will be held in Dubbo on the 24th-25th July for all the NSW State winners in the Young Judges Competitions to help prepare them for the Nationals which will be held in August at the EKKA. The workshop focusses on sharpening the participants observation and comparison skills needed when competing in the Young Judges competitions. Microphone practice is a key element of the weekend along with the social aspect of getting to know other team members, so they cheer each other on during the competition in QLD. The ASC Directors and staff also spend time getting to know each competitor, their background and what lead them into the competitions initially. National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) The movement of all cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs to NSW shows must be recorded in the NLIS database. This ensures these livestock are traceable. The Biosecurity (NLIS) Regulation 2017 requires that ‘stock events’ (country shows) committees record the attendance of livestock at their events. You comply with the NLIS by: For cattle: Option 1 (recommended): Scan all cattle devices and record movements by using the ‘Sighted livestock’ function or using the ‘Livestock moved onto my property’ and ‘Livestock moved off my property’ functions, all available on a ‘Sporting Event’ NLIS database account. Option 2 (only if cattle scanning is not possible): Collect mob-based data on the Excel spreadsheet and record cattle movements using ‘Mob-based in transfers’ and ‘Mob-based out transfers’ functions on the ‘Sporting Event’ NLIS database account. If the functions are not available, contact NSW DPI to arrange access. Option 3 (cattle scanning is not possible, and/or no access to NLIS database): Complete the Excel spreadsheet of all cattle moved to the Show, and back home, and email it to NSW DPI (no pdfs). They will assist you to record this data in the NLIS database as movements of mobs to and from the event. The spreadsheet can also be emailed to Nicky Seeto (no pdfs). For Sheep and Goats: Collect mob-based data in the Excel spreadsheet and record sheep and goat movements by using the ‘Mob-based movement onto/off PIC’ functions on the ‘Sporting Event’ NLIS database account. If no access to NLIS database email completed spreadsheet to NSW DPI (no pdfs) to arrange an upload of data to NLIS. The spreadsheet can also be emailed to Nicky Seeto (no pdfs) For Pigs: All pig movements must be recorded through PigPass database. For access PigPass and assistance with data upload please contact PigPass Helpdesk helpdesk@pigpass.com.au or call 1800 001 458. Instructions on how to upload data to the NLIS database are on the DPI website in the NLIS Guidelines for NSW Shows and sporting events https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/animals-and-livestock/nlis/sheep-goats/guidelines/nlis-guidelines-for-nsw- shows-and-sporting-events and in the Tech Tips available from the ‘Help’ on the ‘Sporting Event’ NLIS database account. NSW DPI strongly recommends that show operators continue to scan cattle and upload NLIS data themselves. Seek assistance from NSW DPI only if event organisers cannot scan cattle and cannot upload data themselves. All livestock movements must be recorded in the NLIS database within two days of the event. Remember, all livestock moved to a show must be properly identified with an NLIS ear tag or device and have a National Vendor Declaration (NVD) or Transported Stock Statement (TSS) with them to cover the movement to the event, and back ‘home’, or to another property. The property or showground where the event is held must have a property identification code (PIC). NSW DPI expects all committees to record livestock movements to and from their show in the NLIS database if they are not already doing so. They are available to help committees if needed. To submit the spreadsheet of show data to NSW DPI, or to ask for assistance, please email enquiries.nlis@dpi.nsw.gov.au Agriculture House Tel: 1 800 025 387 or 02 9879 6777 PO Box 1047 Fax: 02 9879 6043 HUNTERS HILL NSW 2110 Email: nicky.seeto@ascofnsw.org.au Web: www.agshowsnsw.org.au Page | 11

RASF Rural Scholarships The ASC supports the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW Foundation’s Rural Scholarship program. Purpose: To build strong and vibrant rural and regional communities and enhance skills availability by helping to enable access to post high school education and training for rural NSW students. RASF Rural Scholarships support a diverse range of tertiary study and training pursuits for Rural NSW students who: • demonstrate a passion for rural issues and opportunities and who are committed to playing a part in shaping the future of rural and regional NSW • need a financial helping hand to achieve their further education goals and aspirations • may be of any age undertaking full time, part-time or external tertiary study or training (university, VET courses, and apprenticeships) • are in any year of further study or training and they can be pursuing a diverse range of education and training pursuits • are actively involved in their local community. This year the ASC is supporting Carmen MacGregor and Dimity Evans. CARMEN MACGREGOR Carmen is currently studying a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Wollongong. She grew up in a small town near Cobargo where she spent most of her teenage years training and competing horses. Carmen moved away from home three years ago to pursue a degree in Pre-Medicine, Science and Health as she felt that the degree would give her the foundations needed to excel in post-graduate medicine. Since she was fourteen, she has been interested in becoming a doctor and feels privileged to have the opportunity to study medicine this year. Carmen believes access to quality health care is crucial for improving health outcomes and hopes to be able to provide medical care and support to individuals and communities within country areas. DIMITY EVANS Dimity is from the Uralla Shire in the New England. She has just recently graduated from Yanco Agricultural High School in the Riverina, after beginning Year 7 in 2015. Dimity is studying a Bachelor of Rural Science at the University of New England and is residing at Robb College. Dimity has always had a passion for agriculture, being involved with livestock, especially beef and the land for some time. In the future Dimity hopes to pursue a career in either genetics or animal nutrition. We wish both Carmen and Dimity all the very best with their studies. Wool Article/Garment Competition Regulations An updated version of the Wool Article/Garment Rules and regulations can be downloaded here. There is a recommendation that a photo be included with the state final entries showing the garment being worn. Model Horse Regulations The model Horse Regulations have been updated to include a recommendation of the following: The ASC recommends a lower age limit of 3 years of age (as at the date of the competition) for leading rein and 5 years of age for independent riding. Updated regulations can be viewed here. Paid Horse Judges or Course Designers Please remember that if a judge, course builder or steward is paid a fee for their appointment they will need to supply a copy of current personal indemnity insurance as they will not be covered under the Show Society’s Insurance policy. If they are paid traveling expenses only, they will be covered under the Show Societies Volunteer Insurance. It is recommended that a copy of the Judges Code of Conduct be sent to each Judge as reference when Show Societies invite them to attend. For the Code of Conduct for Horse Judges go to ASC- _Horse_Judging_Code_of_Conduct_November_2020.pdf (agshowsnsw.org.au) Rich Fruit Cake Regulations REMINDER: In any year, an individual competitor may participate in only one Group Final representing a Show Society and, consequently, may represent only one Group in the subsequent State Final. ASC President’s Award At the ASC AGM Tim Capp presented Michael Brennan with the 2021 President’s Award. Michael has been an active member of the Kiama Show Committee for over 45 years, and he has been involved with Group 5 for over 25 years and President since 2010. He is a Life Member of both Kiama Show and Group 5. COVID-19 Safety Marshal Training The Government of South Australia offer a free 30-minute COVID Marshal Training online course which covers the fundamentals of infection prevention and control for COVID-19. https://marshal.clickontraining.com.au/ Regarding the South Australian Marshals course, the advice received from NSW Health is that there is no contradiction with the NSW advice as it is very general and shares the common principles with those, we are all using nationally. It covers the role in all the relevant sectors for an agricultural show. As the South Australian course emphasises, the “rules” change from time to time across Australia (largely in response to local COVID prevalence), it is important that the COVID Safety Plan the Marshals are working to is up to date with local requirements at the time.
