Resident Advisor: 1st Floor
Hello Everyone! My name is Avery Young-Lee and I'll be
AVM's first floor RA! I come to Winnipeg from Saskatchewan
and live on a farm with horses and other animals. I am in my
second year of university studying English and I hope to
complete an after degree in Education to become a teacher. I
love to go the gym six days a week and enjoy cooking and
meal prepping. I can't wait to meet everyone. Have a great

Senior Resident Advisor: 2nd Floor
Hey everyone! My name is Steve Desroches, and I will be your
Senior Resident Advisor on 2rd Floor Arthur V. Mauro this year. I
am returning for a 3rd and final year as an RA and I have
previously been an RA on 6th floor Pembina Hall in 2017/2018 and
3rd floor AVM in 2018/2019. I am from the City of Sunshine,
Dauphin, Manitoba, also the home of Countryfest. I am a fourth
year student in the Asper School of Business and am majoring in
accounting with the intention of getting my CPA designation. My
interests revolve around sports. My whole life I have competitively
played many sports including: volleyball, basketball, badminton,
baseball, squash, soccer, and golf. Along with playing sports, I
love going to Bisons’ sporting events, cheering on our athletes and
heckling the other team! I am a die-hard Toronto Blue Jays and
Toronto Maple Leafs fan! You can find me in the lounge on
Saturday nights watching the eighth wonder of the world, Don
Cherry. Sports aside, in my free time I like chilling with friends,
binge watching Netflix, crushing full pizzas, and ripping Fortnite.
Being from Dauphin, I am a huge country music fan, but you can
also find some Maroon 5, Khalid, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and
Coldplay on my shower mix. I’m super excited for the upcoming 1
year! Can’t wait to meet you all in September! Enjoy this photo of

Arjun, Resident Advisor: 3rd Floor Hi, my name is Arjun and I will be the RA on 3rd floor in Arthur V Mauro Residence. I will be beginning my 3rd year of university and am on my way to completing my Bachelor of Science degree. I was born and raised in Abbotsford BC and I am of Punjabi descent. Growing up in the Fraser Valley close to Vancouver naturally I am a Canucks fan! I also enjoy camping and kayaking in the summer. Also, I am a huge soccer (better known as football) fan! I am a supporter of the Whitecaps and Liverpool, you can find me watching Liverpool games early on weekends throughout the year. Another hobby I enjoy is photography, I haven’t been able to put down the camera ever since I got it a few years ago. I look forward to getting to know everyone and having a great year here at the UoM! Connor, Returning Resident Advisor: 4th Floor Hey y’all! My name is Connor and I’ll be the Resident Advisor on the 4th floor of AVM for the 2019-20 academic year! I’m from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, and currently grinding through to complete an Environmental Studies degree here at the U of M. Some things I enjoy in my free time include hunting, fly fishing, camping, and anything to do with the outdoors really. I also enjoy playing many sports including hockey, soccer, softball, and maintaining an active lifestyle. My favourite on campus activities include Hub Nights, winning residence hockey championships, and watching Netflix instead of studying. I am Karman Jeji and I am hella excited to be your Resident Advisor for the upcoming year. A little about myself, I am a fourth year student in the Faculty of Arts and I am majoring in Labour Studies with a management minor. I am from India. People usually ask me what part of India I am from, the answer to that is- ALL OVER! I am a military kid so I grew up in 12 different cities across India. UofM is my 13th school. Feel free to ask me questions about India, I usually don't stop talking until someone absolutely gets sick of it. I like to think of myself as an extremely humorous person and I don't let anyone tell me otherwise. I love dancing, any occasion, any time, you can find me on the dance floor. Hello people! My name is Solomiya Vatsyk, but feel free to call
me Miya! I’m from Ukraine! I’m a forth year student in UM doing
Human Nutrition Science as my major and psychology as my
minor. I’m passionate about dancing, boxing and healthy eating! I
like watching Kevin Hart stand ups! If you haven’t seen
Irresponsible go check it out on Netflix, you won’t regret it! I
consider myself being positive, friendly and open-minded! On
good days I’m funny as well! If you have any questions about UM

Hi everyone! My name is Bruna Maciel and I will be your
Senior Resident Advisor in Mary Speechly Hall. I was born and
raised in São Paulo, Brazil until the age of eight, then moved to
Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. I’m in my third year of
Microbiology, working towards a career in Medicine. In the
spring/summer I enjoy kayaking, biking, playing sports and
getting a good tan on. In the fall/winter you will probably find
me in line at Starbucks, in a study area on campus and
occasionally on a dance floor. Get excited, because I can’t wait
to show you how fun and rewarding living in residence can be!

Hey guys! My name is Liam Merry and I’ll be your Resident
Advisor on 3rd Floor Mary Speechly. I was raised in Dryden,
Ontario until I was 13, then finished high school in Kenora,
Ontario. I’m in my 3rd year in the college of pharmacy. I’m a
pretty agreeable guy, unless someone bad mouths Nickelback
or ranch on pizza. In my free time I like to hang out with
friends, play guitar and piano, go to concerts and cheer on the
Jets. Once you really get to know me you’ll find that I probably
share a similar taste in music with your dad. In the summer
time you can find me playing soccer or tennis, catching walleye
(hopefully), or waiting patiently for Folk Fest. I can’t wait to 3
meet you all, go stallions!

Hello everyone! I'm Aynur Omar, and I will be the Returner
Resident Advisor (4th floor) in Mary Speechly Hall for the year
2019-2020. I aspire to become an architect in the future, and I
love to paint, sing, and debate in Model United Nations
conferences! I also love a good cup of tea while conversing
over random and big topics!
I'm very excited to be part of the residence community for the
upcoming year and I cannot wait to meet you all! Residence life
has enabled me to meet so many people of different
backgrounds and gave me so many valuable experiences and
friendships to look back on! I'm very excited to make this year a
great one, from planning entertaining Spirit Cups to various
types of fun programs alongside my fellow resident advisors.

Hey guys! My name is Jacinta Doupe and I am the Resident
Advisor of 5th floor Mary Speechly Hall this year! I am from
small town, Crandall/Hamiota, Manitoba. I love singing and
dancing and you will always see me bopping along to music no
matter where I am. I love volleyball, water polo, swimming and
going on adventures. I am obsessed with dogs and I’m always
down to see pictures of them and talk about them! I am
working towards a Kinesiology degree. I’m super excited for
this year and I can’t wait to meet everyone and have a great

Hi! I’m Isabel (Izzy for short), and I am from Saint Paul,
Minnesota in the United States. I am in my second year and I
am majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics. I like to read,
paint, and play Wii™ in my free time. I can’t wait for all the
events/socials this year as well as my late night Netflix
marathons. I also love dogs so please tell me whenever you
see one.

Hey, I’m Rufaro Gono.

I’m an international student from the sunny city of Harare in
Zimbabwe & I’m currently in my second year in the Faculty of
Arts. I enjoy making people laugh, playing board games,
watching Netflix shows, sharing food & exchanging funny or
deep meaningful conversations. I’m an overall pretty laidback
girl and so glad to be a part of making your journey in

Hi, my name is Payton Zilkalns I am from a small town in
Ontario called Dryden. I’m in my second year and am majoring
in Film and Political Science. I’m not quite sure what I want to
do after graduation may be a Film Director, maybe a Politician.
Within Winnipeg, I enjoy going to the Forks and the Human
Rights Museum and just kinda adventuring. You can also find
me chilling in a lounge playing Mario Kart Wii™ or studying and
complaining about the caf food.

Hi, my name is Malik and I am a third year student pursing a
marketing major. I am originally from Lebanon but have lived
my life all over the world. I like most sports but my favorites are
football (soccer for North Americans) and basketball. I watch a
lot of Netflix, mainly the office (over and over again) with my

Hi guys! I’m Ishaanee and I’m super excited to be the 4th floor
RA for PHR. I was an RA in UCR last year! I’m from Oman,
and in my 2nd year of university studying criminology. I am a

Resident Advisor: 5th Floor
Hello all! My name is Madeleine Lovsin and I am very
excited to be the RA for 5th Floor Pembina Hall! I am from
Edmonton, Alberta, so my home is very far from here as most
of you will be able to relate to come fall time. I am a very
active person, I have tried every sport known but right now I
play ringette and rugby! I am always guaranteed to be the one
that is the loudest in every room and if you don’t mind a little
sarcasm here and there, I think we will get along just fine! I

Hi everyone! My name is Amy, I’m super excited to be the RA
on 6th floor for Pembina Hall! I am from a small town,
Minnedosa, Manitoba. I love hanging out with friends,

Hey, my name is Sam Staples. I am from beautiful and
amazing Victoria, British Columbia. I will be your RA for 7th
floor Pembina Hall residence in the 2019/2020 year. I have
three cats and one dog at home; I love all of them! I love
being outdoors, playing soccer, and watching hockey. I was
also in Air Cadets for 6 years; I received my glider pilots
license in the summer of 2018. I am very excited to be your
resident advisor, I am also looking forward to getting to know

Hey guys! My name is Vanessa, I will be a second-year
student wanting to pursue a career in the health care field. I
was born in Colombia and moved to Canada when I was 7
years old. Spanish is my first language and still get excited
when I meet people who can speak it as well! I love sports,
specifically basketball & track and I’m also a big fan of
dancing! I enjoy listening to good music, so if you have a

Hello, my name is Noah Duguay and I will be the Resident
Advisor for the ninth floor of Pembina Hall for 2019-2020. This
will be my second year in Pembina Hall so feel free to ask me
any questions about residence and first year university. I am
from the small town of Carberry, Manitoba. I will be entering
my second year of Engineering, and will most likely go be
going into Biosystems Engineering. My hobbies and interests
include fishing, water sports, curling and snowboarding. I am
truly excited for another amazing year on campus and look
forward to meeting all of you!

Hey everyone from near and far, my name is Chilombo
Kawesha, but everyone calls me Chilo! I am the Resident
Advisor on the 10th Floor of Pembina Hall for the 2019-2020
school year. I am from Zambia (located in the Southern Region
of Africa) which is home to the mighty Victoria Falls. I am going
into my second year of attaining a double major in International
Business and Finance at the Asper School of Business.
The giraffe is my spirit, power and totem animal for so many
reasons. Plus, I’m really tall, so what other animal is better to
have than a giraffe? Lol. I’m extremely stoked and looking
forward to having a great year with everyone on Res.

Hi everyone! My name’s Shelby Leroux and I am the
resident advisor for 11th floor Pembina Hall. I am from small
town Kenora, Ontario and I’m currently studying French in
hopes of becoming a teacher. I like school a lot, but in my
down time I like hanging out with my friends in the lounge,
listening to music, going for walks outside, and binge
watching Netflix. I also enjoy playing hockey, curling and
intramural water polo. I am a very positive person and I try my
best to be funny and make jokes whenever the opportunity
arises! I can’t wait to meet everyone!

Resident Advisor: 12th Floor
Hey guys, my name is Justin Podoll and I am going to be the
RA on the Scholar’s Floor, 12th floor Pembina Hall. I am a
third-year student at Asper majoring in actuarial math and
management informations systems. I’m from a small town
called Monticello in Minnesota and enjoy hunting, fishing,
kayaking, working on computers, gaming, and going out to the
Hub and to socials. My favorite movies are the Star Wars
movies (all are great) and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I
also enjoy watching terrible sci-fi movies so be sure to join me
in a lounge! I am hoping to plan some academic-focused
events such as organizing study groups and keeping you all
up to date on new career opportunities like information
sessions and career fairs (found them to be very helpful for
networking with employers). I have met many great people
through living in Pembina for the last two years and am

Hey everyone, my name is Noah Sabiston and I will be a
Returning Resident Advisor for the Engineering Living
Learning Community, 13th floor Pembina Hall for 2019 - 2020.
I was a resident advisor on the 13th floor of Pembina Hall last
year, making me very familiar with the dynamics of Pembina
Hall. I have spent two years in Pembina Hall and have made
many wonderful memories there and I know that new
residents will do the same. I am from the small community of
Spence Lake, Manitoba and I am lucky to live right beside
Lake Manitoba. I will be entering my third year of Engineering
and I plan on majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Some of
my interests include playing music (mainly on the guitar),
going to the gym, playing sports and being outdoors. If you
ever need any advice or help concerning 1st year Engineering
classes, or just want to chat my door is always open. I also
really like math so there is a good chance I could help anyone
out with it. I really cannot wait to meet all the new, amazing
people this year and hope that this will be our best year ever!

Hey everyone! My name is Larissa and I’m going to be
Returning Resident Advisor for 4th floor University College
Residence. I spent the past two years in Pembina Hall, but I
finally decided it was time to be cooler and move to UCR! I
am originally from Thompson, Manitoba and I came here to
study psychology. I enjoy watching the Bachelor, hanging out
with friends and you may even see me on the dance floor
occasionally! I am so excited for this upcoming year and I

Hey everyone! I’m Finn Makila and I’m very excited to be the
RA for 5th floor University College Residence. I am currently a
third-year student majoring in Food Science. I am from South
Minneapolis, Minnesota and have lived in UCR for the last two
years. Fun fact: I was one of the co-presidents for the
University College Residence Student Association last year!
I’m an avid bread fanatic. My current specialty is making
sourdough so if you’re ever interested in learning about bread,
follow my instagram @crumbboy or stop by my room to chat!
I’m also currently learning how to play the piano so if you
have any tricks please let me know. Here are some fun facts
about me: I’m vegan, I like to wear hats, I am interested in
fashion, I like listening to and making music, and I like to play
ultimate frisbee.

Hi, my name is Gwendolyn Black and I will be your 6th-floor
Resident Advisor in UCR. I was born and raised in Golden
Valley, Minnesota. I am currently studying psychology with a
business minor with aspirations of working in advertising. In
my free time, I enjoy watching Netflix (Greys Anatomy and
Queer Eye), having a glass of wine with my friends or going to
the gym. I also love to travel to new places and try new food.

Resident Advisor: 7th Floor
Hello there! I’m Brook Rivard, and I will be the RA for 7th floor
UCR for the academic year of 2019-2020. I’m from Calgary,
Alberta where I spend my time golfing, hanging out with
friends, or playing video games (PS4). This will be my third
year at the UofM, studying engineering. I have lived in
residence here at the UofM for the past two years and have
absolutely loved it! I really hope that I can be a part of making
your residence experience great. You can likely find me
hanging out in the floor lounge, especially if Mario kart is
involved! I am confident that this year will be great, and I can’t
wait to meet you all!

Hey guys! I’m the 8th-floor UCR Resident Advisor. My name
is Kateryna but most people call me Kat. I’m a Ukrainian
born, Vancouver raised gal who’s currently studying sciences
at the university. I drink too much coffee for my own good and
I love to chicken teriyaki (only from my favorite sushi place in
Van city). I love to read and cook in my spare time, when I’m
not drowning in assignments, and I enjoy spending time with
my friends as much as possible! I hope to make your stay at
UCR a blast and a breeze, and I look forward to making many
new friends!
