Job Outlook
Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15
percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all
occupations. Growth will occur for a number of reasons,
including an increased emphasis on preventative care;
growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and
obesity; and demand for healthcare services from the baby
boomer population, as they live longer and more active lives.

Addressing a Growing Trend
• In 2010, the Institute of Medicine introduced new demands
on the nursing field when it set a target goal for 80% of all
nurses to hold bachelor’s degrees by 2020.
• The American Association of the Colleges of Nursing
(AACN) has collected extensive research that indicates that
higher nursing education makes a major difference in clinical
  outcomes.
• The AACN (American Association of College of Nursing)
  recognizes the BSN
as the minimum educational requirement of professional
  nursing practice.
Magnet Status and Nursing Opportunities
• The ‘magnet’ designation, awarded by the American
Nurses Association, is highly coveted by hospitals, and
has been given to 445 hospitals as of 2016.
• This recognition means that 100% of the organization’s
nurse managers have a BSN or graduate degree.
• Approximately 50% of all nurses associated with direct
patient care in a Magnet-recognized hospital currently
  have a BSN.
