Curriculum planning in Health and Physical Education
needs to be part of total school planning.
Questions to consider:
Which faculties/classroom/specialist teachers have
responsibility for student learning in domains such as
Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning,
Communication and Thinking Processes?
Is the domain of Information Communications Technology
being treated a separate subject or is it being integrated
through all domains?
ACHPERThe standards and learning focus statements
The standards are the basis for curriculum
planning
- essential learning
- assessment
- reporting
The learning focus statements suggest teaching
and learning activities
ACHPERSequence of Learning • Learning is continuous and connected. • Sequence of learning builds on earlier work. • The content and processes increase in complexity and challenge for students. • Students should be able to make connections with earlier work.
Why link HPE to other domains? To educate students in a more holistic way by purposefully teaching the relationships and interactions between different domains and applying to real life situations.
Planning units of work - an option to consider
Backwards curriculum design
1. Decide on unit focus
2. What knowledge, skills and behaviours do you want your students to be
able to demonstrate at the end of this unit, subject or program?
3. What elements of the standards will be addressed by this unit, subject
or program?
4. Decide on evidence of learning
5. Plan assessment activities
6. Plan teaching and learning activities
enable students to progress towards the standards
cater for a range of learning styles
promote deep understanding of the concepts being taught
7. Plan for effective feedback
8. Plan to evaluate the unit

Domain Dimension Key Elements of Standards
Students:
Health & Physical Movement & Physical Students refine basic and complex motor
Education Activity skills and apply these skills in increasingly
complex games and activities.
Students effectively use strategic thinking
and work with more and less skilled peers to
improve game performance.
Interpersonal Working in Teams Students work effectively in different teams
Development and take on a variety of roles to complete
tasks of varying length and complexity.
Students provide feedback to others and
evaluate their own and the teams
performance.
Personal Learning Managing Personal Students persist when experiencing difficulty
Learning with learning tasks.

Assessment OF learning
occurs when teachers use
evidence of student learning to
make judgements on student
achievement against goals and
standards.
