REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD
If Christmas is the “most wonderful time of the year,” then Easter is the most
joyous, glorious, awesome time of the year! Really? Today’s readings don’t
exactly brim over with the kind of holiday cheer we find at Christ-mas—except
for the responsorial psalm, which admittedly rings with gleeful joy. But other-
wise, not so much. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter
gives a dry, condensed rendering of the story of Jesus to a group of Gentiles
in Caesarea. The Colossians reading actually does have us looking forward to
glory. Most underwhelming, though, is the Gospel proclamation of the resur-
rection of Jesus Christ. When we want to hear about angels and earthquakes
and trumpets and glory, we hear about a dark, silent, empty tomb. This Easter
Sunday story from John’s Gospel is startling in its emptiness. Like Peter in the
story, we must enter into this mystery.
THE MYSTERY OF EMPTINESS
Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed! This Paschal greeting is customary in
Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches on Easter Sunday. Then there is
Saint Augustine’s acclamation of joy: We are an Easter people and Alleluia is
our song! However you express it, Easter is the time for rejoicing because Je-
sus Christ, our friend and brother, is risen from the dead. And yet today’s scriptures are less joyful than one
would expect for the most important feast in the Christian calendar. Perhaps we are being asked to look
deeper into the mys-tery of the Resurrection, just as Peter went into the tomb to look deeper into the mystery
of its emptiness. Mary Magdalene, who loved the Lord so much that she risked every-thing, possibly even her
life, to go to the tomb before daybreak, finds the stone rolled away and assumes that someone has taken Je-
sus’ body. Frightened and sad, she runs to tell Peter and John. They all run back to the tomb, but what do
they expect to see? Peter enters the tomb and sees. John enters, sees, and believes. But what does he be-
lieve? Scrip-ture states, “For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the
dead” (John 20:9). They went home, not really knowing what had happened. But John “believed” something.
SOMETHING HAPPENED
What do we believe? Somewhere between that Easter morning and Pe-ter’s confident teaching about Jesus
in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, something (the Risen Christ) happened. Peter has evolved from
his bewilderment into a witness to the Resurrection.
What are we to find in the empty tomb? Maybe the Colossians reading has an answer. By entering the empty
tomb of our lives to seek the Lord, we see, we believe, we die, to be raised with Christ. “For you have died,
and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). And we will rise in glory with him.

Chúa Nhật Phục sinh – A— Ga 20,1-9
Từ “thấy” đến “tin”
Ông Si-mon Phê-rô vào thẳng trong mộ, thấy những băng vải để ở đó, và khăn che đầu Đức
Giê-su. Khăn này không để lẫn với các băng vải, nhưng cuốn lại, xếp riêng ra một nơi. Bấy
giờ người môn đệ kia, kẻ đã tới mộ trước, cũng đi vào. Ông đã thấy và đã tin. (Ga 20,6-8)
Suy niệm: Những điều Gio-an thấy tại mộ Chúa vào buổi sáng ngày thứ nhất trong tuần hôm ấy
được trình bày một cách rõ ràng, mạch lạc và chính xác chẳng khác nào một biên bản hiện
trường: - việc Gio-an đến mộ nhưng nhường cho Phê-rô vào trước; - hiện trường ngôi mộ được
bảo vệ nguyên vẹn (khăn liệm và các băng vải được gấp xếp gọn ghẽ trong mộ…); - sự hiện diện
của 2 nhân chứng (Phê-rô và Gio-an) tại ngôi mộ trống. Những điều Gio-an “thấy” chỉ là một
ngôi mộ trống với những chứng tích còn lại. Và từ những điều trông thấy đó, Gio-an đã khẳng
định ngắn gọn và chắc nịch: “Ông đã thấy và đã tin.”
Mời Bạn: Gio-an đã “thấy” chính những điều mà Phê-rô, Tô-ma hay các tông đồ khác cũng thấy,
đó là ngôi mộ trống và tấm khăn liệm. Nhưng nhờ đó, Gio-an “thấy” được cả những “điều không
thấy”: xác Chúa không còn trong mộ nữa. Từ “điều không thấy”, Gio-an đã tin: tin Đức Ki-tô đã sống lại. “Phúc cho ai
đã không thấy mà tin,” phải chăng Đức Ki-tô phục sinh nói điều đó trước hết cho Gio-an?
Chia sẻ: Từ sự kiện “mồ trống”, bạn lập luận để xác tín rằng niềm tin vào Đức Ki-tô phục sinh mà Gio-an và các tông
đồ rao giảng cho chúng ta quả là xác thực.
Sống Lời Chúa: Bạn dùng một cử chỉ (phủ phục trước Thánh Thể Chúa…) hoặc một lời nguyện vắn tắt để tuyên xưng
niềm tin vào Đức Ki-tô phục sinh.
Cầu nguyện: Lạy Chúa con, lạy Thiên Chúa của con, con tin Chúa đã chết và đã sống lại để cứu chuộc con. (Thanhlinh.net)

Chân Phước William Ward (k. 1641)
Ngày 12/04
William Ward sinh ở Anh Quốc vào khoảng năm 1560 với tên họ là Webster trong một gia đình theo Tin
Lành. Khi thực hiện cuộc hành trình sang Tây Ban Nha với một người bạn Công Giáo, lúc ấy người đã là một
thầy giáo trẻ. Ở đây, người trở lại đạo Công Giáo, và khi trở về nước, người hoán cải chính mẹ mình. Vì công
khai tuyên xưng đức tin, người bị giam cầm nhiều lần.
Vào năm 40 tuổi, người sang Douai, nước Pháp để học làm linh mục. Sau khi được thụ phong và lấy tên là
Cha William Ward, người được đưa sang Tô Cách Lan. Khi vừa đến đây, ngay lập tức người bị cầm tù trong
ba năm.
Trong 30 năm kế tiếp, người sống ở ngoại ô Luân Ðôn, bí mật phục vụ người Công Giáo và nổi tiếng là một
linh mục thánh thiện với sự quan tâm đặc biệt đến người nghèo. Vì lý do đó, người thường bị cầm tù hoặc bị
trục xuất khỏi nước. Sau cùng, người bị phản bội bởi một tay chuyên săn bắt linh mục và bị giam trong Ngục
Newgate.
Bị kết án tử hình bằng cách treo cổ và phanh thây, người từ trần ngày 26 tháng Bảy 1641 sau khi thốt ra
những lời: “Lạy Chúa Giêsu, xin nhận lấy linh hồn con!”
Cha William được phong chân phước năm 1929 cùng với 162 vị tử đạo Anh Quốc khác. (Thanhlinh.net))
