Un monde fascinant se cacheTRASH CAN JAM FOR EVERYONE! Since partnering with Compost Winnipeg in 2017, FortWhyte has diverted an average of 13,000 lbs/year of organic material from landfills. While we’re proud of our success, the cornerstone of FortWhyte’s Sustainability Plan is to inspire all visitors to be more environmentally conscious in their everyday lives. We’re excited to announce all groups staying for lunch will participate in the Trash Can Jam Challenge! A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON GARBAGE We want waste reduction to be accessible for all students. That’s why we will focus on the message, and not the amount of trash in the can. We want to help your students to make the choice to reduce, reuse and recycle everyday. S TA R T T H E C O N V E R S AT I O N I N T H E C L A S S R O O M What happens to your wrapper after you throw it out? From math to science, English and art, unique opportunities for learning can be uncovered by taking a closer look at what we are throwing away. Contact education@fortwhyte.org for waste reduction activity ideas and ways to prepare your students for a garbage-less lunch at FortWhyte. TRASH CAN JAM IN ACTION Before your lunch begins, FortWhyte Alive staff will introduce the Challenge and provide instructions for sorting waste. A 5-litre pail will help students see first hand how much garbage heads to the landfill. After lunch, we will check-in and get your students engaged with some thinking questions that can spark future action. CUSTOM OUTDOOR LEARNING, DEEPER CONNECTIONS Is this the year you explore Deeper Connections with the natural world? Working with school educators, a FortWhyte Alive Educator develops a customized outdoor-inquiry- based learning program. This is not a one-time field trip to FortWhyte Alive. Most Deeper Connections programming happens in natural spaces both at FortWhyte and at or around your school. Teachers and students learn about the local ecology, developing a stronger sense of community. Pricing and scheduling are adapted to fit school needs. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT FORTWHY TE ALIVE Do you know a friend, colleague, or family member who... • Wants to use their skills and experience working with children and youth? • Is a new graduate looking for teaching experience • Is newly retired and looking for a way to give back and stay active? • Loves the outdoors and sharing their passion? Each season, FortWhyte Alive recruits a team of passionate volunteers to lead students of all ages in unforgettable outdoor experiences. FortWhyte volunteers are the kind people who help kids roast their first marshmallow over an open fire, or teach them the difference between an aspen and a spruce tree. These are the moments we live for! Leading school groups is also a great way to meet people, and learn new skills – all while staying active. Training starts September 3, 2019.
