Opening Yourself to the Other
In marriage, individuality is not sacrificed for the sake of the relationship. You respect the distinctive
features of your spouse’s personal and spiritual life. Marriage partners are in a unique and
privileged position to learn about life, about self, and about God from and through each other.
You find your identity and meaning of life with and through each other. You are called to be a soul
mate to the other.
St. Paul exhorts married couples and family members: “Be subordinate to one another out of
reverence for Christ” (Eph 5:21). He emphasizes on mutuality. The principle of subordination to
one another under Christ undermines exclusive claims to domination by one party. In all our
relationships, we are to follow Christ: “… live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over
for us as a sacrificial offering to God” (Eph 5:2).
Christian living is not about solitary salvation, introspection, self-absorption, but about ever-fuller
participation in communion with God and with others. Human persons are made for loving
communion with others. Because God is not solitary, or self-sufficient, but lives eternally in ecstatic,
outgoing love, human persons created in the image of this God find their personhood realized not
in autonomy or self-sufficiency or isolation but in self-donation; we come to ourselves through
others.
The sacrament of Marriage helps us to become what God wants us to be, because marriage helps us
to overcome self-absorption, egoism, pursuit of one’s own pleasure; marriage helps us to open
ourselves to the other, [the spouse, children, in-laws, and neighbors] to mutual aid and to self-
giving.
Even though we may be fickle and fragile, sinful and broken, God can enable us to become like
Him if our life is anchored in Him. “If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is
brought to perfection in us” (1 John 4:11-12). “God living in us, and we living in God,” that is the
awesome mystery of Christian life.
God is the enchanting magician, changing nothing into something, turning sorrow into joy, despair
into hope, earth into heaven. Indeed, God is passionately in love with us as shown by the self-
sacrificing death of Jesus for us. His death, his resurrection changed everything. He opened the
gate of heaven for us. He made it possible for us to know God and to live in him and He in us.
God is love and we are created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, when our life becomes
a manifestation of that love, we become what we are called and meant to be.

Katharine Balog has just accepted the Interim Assistant Principal position at St. Jude. She has been teach-
ing for 16 years, 11 at St. Jude. She is a graduate of Quince Orchard High School, and West Virginia Uni-
versity with a BFA in fine arts and education. Mrs. Balog received her master’s degree from Hood College
in Educational Leadership and Administration. Mrs. Balog has been teaching fourth grade at St. Jude for 9
years-incorporating her creativity into their daily lessons and she will continue to teach her 4th grade
class. Katharine and her husband Adam are very excited to enroll their 3-year-old son the in preK3 pro-
gram this year. Katharine considers St. Jude a second home and cannot wait to share her love for St. Jude
with her son. She is excited to join the administration and continue to serve the community she adores.

Abriéndote al Otro
En el matrimonio, la individualidad no se sacrifica por el bien de la relación. Respeta las
características distintivas de la vida personal y espiritual de su cónyuge. Los cónyuges se encuentran
en una posición única y privilegiada para aprender mutuamente sobre la vida, sobre sí mismos y
sobre Dios. Encuentras tu identidad y el significado de la vida con los demás y a través de ellos.
Estás llamado a ser el alma gemela del otro.
San Pablo exhorta a los matrimonios y a los miembros de la familia: “Sométanse los unos a los
otros por reverencia a Cristo” (Efesios 5:21). Insiste en la reciprocidad. El principio de obediencia
unos a otros bajo Cristo socavan las pretensiones exclusivas de dominación por una de las partes.
En todas nuestras relaciones, debemos seguir a Cristo: “… vivamos en amor, como Cristo nos amó
y se entregó a sí mismo por nosotros como ofrenda de sacrificio a Dios” (Efesios 5: 2).
La vida cristiana no se trata de salvación solitaria, introspección, ensimismamiento, sino de una
participación cada vez más plena en la comunión con Dios y con los demás. Las personas humanas
están hechas para la comunión amorosa con los demás. Debido a que Dios no es solitario ni
autosuficiente, sino que vive eternamente en amor extático y extrovertido, las personas humanas
creadas a imagen de este Dios encuentran su personalidad realizada no en la autonomía, la
autosuficiencia o el aislamiento, sino en la donación de sí mismas; llegamos a nosotros mismos a
través de los demás.
El sacramento del matrimonio nos ayuda a convertirnos en lo que Dios quiere que seamos, porque
el matrimonio nos ayuda a superar el ensimismamiento, el egoísmo, la búsqueda del propio placer;
el matrimonio nos ayuda a abrirnos al otro, [el cónyuge, los hijos, los suegros y los vecinos] a la
ayuda mutua y a la entrega.
Aunque seamos inconstantes y frágiles, pecadores y quebrantados, Dios puede capacitarnos para
llegar a ser como Dios si nuestra vida está anclada en Dios. “Si nos amamos unos a otros, Dios
permanece en nosotros, y su amor se perfecciona en nosotros” (1 Juan 4: 11-12). “Dios vive en
nosotros y nosotros vivimos en Dios”, ese es el asombroso misterio de la vida cristiana.
Dios es el mago encantador, que transforma nada en algo, convierte la tristeza en alegría, la
desesperación en esperanza, la tierra en cielo. De hecho, Dios está apasionadamente enamorado de
nosotros, como lo demuestra la abnegada muerte de Jesús por nosotros. Su muerte, su resurrección
lo cambió todo. Nos abrió la puerta del cielo. Nos hizo posible conocer a Dios y vivir en él y él en
nosotros. Dios es amor y somos creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Por lo tanto, cuando
nuestra vida se convierte en una manifestación de ese amor, nos convertimos en lo que estamos
llamados y destinados a ser.

Katharine Balog acaba de aceptar el puesto de Asistente Subdirectora Provisional en San Judas. Ha estado
enseñando durante 16 años, 11 en San Judas. Se graduó de Quince Orchard High School y de la Universi-
dad de West Virginia con una licenciatura en arte y educación. La Sra. Balog recibió su maestría de Hood
College en Administración y Liderazgo Educativo. La Sra. Balog ha estado enseñando cuarto grado en San
Judas durante 9 años, incorporando su creatividad en sus lecciones diarias y continuará enseñando su cla-
se de cuarto grado. Katharine y su esposo Adam están muy emocionados de inscribir a su hijo de 3 años
en el programa preK3 este año. Katharine considera a San Judas como un segundo hogar y está ansiosa
