A Catholic Framework for Economic Life
The Catholic bishops of the United States believe
building a just economy that works for all
encompasses a wide range of issues, including
food security and hunger, work and joblessness,
homelessness and affordable housing, and tax
credits for low-income families, as well as
protecting programs that serve poor and
vulnerable people throughout the federal budget.
The economy exists for the person, not the person
for the economy.
All economic life should be shaped by moral principles. Economic choices and
institutions must be judged by how they protect or undermine the life and dignity of
the human person, support the family and serve the common good.
A fundamental moral measure of any economy is how the poor and vulnerable are
faring.
All people have a right to life and to secure the basic necessities of life (e.g., food,
clothing, shelter, education, health care, safe environment, economic security.)
All people have the right to economic initiative, to productive work, to just wages
and benefits, to decent working conditions as well as to organize and join unions or
other associations.
All people, to the extent they are able, have a corresponding duty to work, a
responsibility to provide the needs of their families and an obligation to contribute to
the broader society.
In economic life, free markets have both clear advantages and limits; government has
essential responsibilities and limitations; voluntary groups have irreplaceable roles,
but cannot substitute for the proper working of the market and the just policies of the
state.
Society has a moral obligation, including governmental action where necessary, to
assure opportunity, meet basic human needs, and pursue justice in economic life.
Workers, owners, managers, stockholders and consumers are moral agents in
economic life. By our choices, initiative, creativity and investment, we enhance or
diminish economic opportunity, community life and social justice.
The global economy has moral dimensions and human consequences. Decisions on
investment, trade, aid and development should protect human life and promote
human rights, especially for those most in need wherever they might live on this
globe.

That Man is You—The Fight of Faith
All men of St. Jude’s parish and school community are
invited to join the participants of That Man is You as we
begin our fifth year of fellowship and study. That Man is
You is an interactive men’s program focused on the de-
velopment of male leadership in the modern world by
addressing the pressures and temptations that men face
in our modern culture, especially those relating to their
role as husbands and fathers. It combines the best re-
search from science with the teachings of the Catholic
faith and the wisdom of the saints to develop the vision
of authentic men capable of transforming themselves,
their families, and the greater society.
On Saturday, September 18, the participants will begin
our fifth year — the Fight of Faith. The Fight of Faith
equips and enables men to engage in the spiritual battle
raging in our day. Examples from both the Old and
New Testament will emerge to inspire heroic lives of
service to a calling greater than ourselves. Contemplate
the mysterious Will of God and discover a King-
dom “not of this world”. Embrace our true identity as
sons of the Father while experiencing the intimacy and
secrets of a deep and person friendship with
Christ. Uncover the ultimate truth that sheds light on all

faith to win an imperishable crown of glory.

Fundamentos Católicos para la Actividad Económica
Como seguidores de Jesucristo y participantes en una
economía poderosa, los católicos en Estados Unidos están
llamados a luchar por una mayor justicia económica frente
a la pobreza persistente, la brecha creciente en los salarios y
el aumento en el debate de los asuntos económicos en
Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo. Exhortamos a los
católicos a que usen estos fundamentos éticos para la
actividad económica como principios para su reflexión,
como criterios para sus juicios y como guías para su acción.
Estos principios se derivan directamente de la doctrina
católica sobre la actividad económica:
1. La economía existe para servir a la persona, no la persona para la economía.
2. La actividad economica deberá estar regida por principios morales. Las decisiones e instituciones
económicas deberán ser juzgadas de acuerdo con su capacidad de proteger o menoscabar la vida y
la dignidad de la persona humana, de apoyar a la familia y de servir a bien común.
3. Una medida moral fundamental de toda economía es el trato que reciben los pobres y los
desamparados.
4. Todos tienen derecho a la vida y a satisfacer la necesidades básicas (tales como alimento, ropa,
techo, educación, cuidados médicos, ambiente saludable, seguridad económica.)
5. Todas tienen derecho a tomar iniciativas económicas, al trabajo productivo, a salarios justos con
los subsidios correspondientes, a condiciones decentes de trabajo, así como también a organizarse
para formar sindicatos u otras asociaciones.
6. Todos, según su capacidad, tienen el deber de trabajar, la responsabilidad de satisfacer las
necesidades de su familia y la obligación de contribuir a la sociedad en general.
7. En la vida económica, los mercados libres tienen ventajas y límites claros; el gobierno tiene
responsabilidades y limitaciones esenciales; los grupos voluntarios tienen funciones irremplazables,
pero no sustituyen el funcionamiento apropiado de los mercados ni a las normas justas del Estado.
8. La sociedad tiene la obligación moral, incluso mediante acciones gubernamental si es necesario,
de asegurar que haya oportunidad de satisfacer las necesidades básicas y buscar la justicia en la vida
económica.
9. Trabajadores, propietarios, administradores, inversionistas y consumidores son agentes morales
de la actividad económica. Con nuestras decisiones, iniciativa, creatividad e inversión, mejoramos o
menoscabamos las oportunidades económicas, la vida comunitaria y la justicia social.
10. La economía mundial tiene dimensiones morales y consecuencias humanas. Las decisiones sobre
inversiones, intercambio, ayuda y desarrollo deben proteger la vida humana y promover los
derechos humanos, especialmente para los más necesitados dondequiera que vivan en este mundo.
