3 Important InformationPRESENTING SINGAPORE A fishing village first discovered in 1819, Singapore has since transformed into a cosmopolitan city today. A melting pot of both commercial and leisure activities, this city state is a place where visitors get to experience a bit of everything. You are invited to an exciting journey of culture, heritage and contemporary happenings in the city!
12 MUST DO
THINGS IN SINGAPORE
You haven’t really experienced Singapore if you haven’t tried our
list of recommended things to do. This is where the real charm of
Singapore lies. Are you ready?
u Eat at the hawker centre!
A hawker center is an open air cooked food
market place found in both city centers and the
heartlands. The dishes served are as authentic
(local-flavored) as it gets. You can get a hearty
meal and a drink or dessert for less than $5.
u Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel
This signature cocktail was first concocted at the
Long Bar of Raffles Hotel by bartender Ngiam
Tong Boon in early 1900’s. Visit the 2 storey bar,
order yourself an authentic Singapore Sling and
embrace the nostalgia of the Raffles Hotel.
u Party at Clarke Quay
A dining and entertainment destination, Clarke
Quay houses antiques, restaurants, hip cafes,
jazz lounges and clubs. Visit Clarke Quay at
night for a riverside dinner followed by partying
away at any of the quirky non-mainstream clubs.
u Frame the Merlion
Talk a stroll along Merlion Park, enjoy the
waterfront and take a photo with the famous
Merlion. With a head of a lion and body of a fish,
this mythical iconic has become synonymous
with Singapore.
u Walk through Geylang
While Geylang may be known to be a red-light
district, there are plenty of other things to do and
see at the fringe. From sampling local fruits to
midnight supper hunt and even indulge in
prawn-fishing!
u Immerse in the Heartland
Tiong Bahru, Toa Payoh, and Marine Parade are
just some of the colorful heartlands you should
visit. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, this
is the best way to see how the locals live, dine
and play.
5 Presenting Singapore12 MUST DO
THINGS IN SINGAPORE
u Go ethnic
While Singapore is known as a metropolitan
city, diversity is what makes it unique.
Check-out Chinatown, Little India and Kampong
Glam (Malay enclave) for the distinct flavors of
each ethic community.
u Temple for soul
Places of worship are abundant and often near
to each other. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple
in Chinatown is just a block away from Sri
Mariamman Temple (the oldest Hindu temple)
and Jamae Mosque.
u Chilli Crab in Singapore!
Chilli Crab is listed as number 35th on “The
World’s 50 most delicious foods” compiled by
CNN Go in 2011. This Singaporean iconic
seafood dish is a must try to complete the
culinary journey of any travellers.
u Free Walking Tour
Go on foot, join a walking tour and comb
through Little India or Chinatown to see the
country’s rich heritage up close. You might just
find gems and unique souvenirs in the bustling
markets to bring home.
u Hop-on Hop-off (HoHo) City Spin
Enjoy Singapore with the HoHo transport
network. With 5 different routes and high bus
frequency, the network connects you from city
hotels to major tours and attractions, saving you
time and transportation cost.
u Skyway (Gardens by the Bay)
There’s nothing quite like strolling along the
OCBC Skyway for a birds eye view of the
world’s largest garden within a city. As dusk
sets in, don’t miss the twice-daily Garden
Rhapsody light and sound show.
Presenting Singapore 6SHOPPING
IN SINGAPORE
Shopping in Singapore is an experience like none other. As one of the
most vibrant shopping hubs in Asia, Singapore is the shopping paradise
for visitors and locals alike. Here is our editor’s recommendation:
u Orchard Road, a great street
A 2.2km long fashion paradise for locals and
tourists, Orchard Road is what Fifth Avenue is to
New York. High fashion at ION and Paragon, or
everyday wear at Ngee Ann City and Wisma Atria,
there’s something for every budget.
u The Shoppes at MBS, all things luxury
The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is Singapore's
first large-scale luxury shopping mall in the
Central Business District. Expect nothing less
than international luxury brands and emerging
runway labels.
u Suntec City, Fountain of Wealth
Designed with Chinese geomancy influence,
Suntec City resembles a left hand with the world’s
largest water fountain in it’s palm. When you are
done shopping, don’t forget to take a turn at the
fountain for good luck.
u Funan DigitaLife Mall, all things electronics
This is one of the best places to go for all things
computer and tech-related. From laptops and ipads
to printers and digital cameras, headphones to
smart watches, there is always a bargain waiting for
you. Happy gadget hunting!
u Bugis Village, the night market
Comprising of hundreds small stalls set up by
young entrepreneurs who source various
interesting goods from Asia, Bugis Village is the
place for nick nacks. Open from noon, it truly
comes alive after dusk.
u Thieves Market, open air flea market
Sungei Road Thieves Market in its heydays has
more than 400 vendors selling used items from
vinyl records, old cameras to jade and collector’s
stamps. Opens daily after 2pm, always bargain
before you buy!
7 Presenting SingaporeCITY IN

managed to retain many of its natural vegetation and is zealous in creating
more gardens and parks. Get a taste of nature at these hotspots:
u Gardens by the Bay

types of plants. Located within the Singapore
Botanic Gardens is the National Orchid Gardens
with the world’s largest orchid display.
u Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

is home to over 500 species of animals and
plants. The best time to visit is early morning
where all animals like otters, crabs and even
water snake are most active.

it has an abundance of untouched natural flora
and fauna. Home to a significant number of
visiting and resident birds, it is a favorite spot for
bird watching.
u Fort Canning Park

landmarks, this is where the British surrendered
Singapore to the Japanese during WWII. The
highlights are the spice garden, WWII bunker
and Gothic-styled gates.
u Southern Ridges
This 10km stretch of connecting trails lets you
walk among the trees to observe a wide variety
of flora and fauna in their natural habitat. You
can also get a panoramic view of the city,

global hotspots, Ku De Ta sits on the top floor of
Marina Bay Sands Sky Park. Enjoy the view

hippest roads are closed to vehicles to cater to all
sorts of pedestrian merriment. Choose from more
than 20 establishments offering cocktails, craft
beers, rare whiskey and more.

well preserved over the years. It is now a hawker
centre offering the best of local cuisine at

loveliest food court.
u Maxwell Hawker Centre

serving local dishes backed by generations.
Whether it’s fish soup, chicken rice, porridge,
satay or any other dishes that catches your fancy,
it is as authentic as it gets here.
9 Presenting SingaporeLOCAL
FAVOURITE BITES
Eating is a favorite Singaporean past time. We even greet each other by
asking “Have you eaten?” So while in Rome, do as the Roman does, make
sure you savour all the “must-try” local cuisine laid out below.
u Muthu’s Curry Fish Head
Muthu’s Curry has been serving their signature
dish since 1969! Their famous outlet is at
Serangoon (Little India) where many curry fish
head lovers congregate to savour this dish full
of spice and flavour.

hands down in a Laksa cook-out contest. Try
the winning dish (spicy rice noodle in rich
savoury curry broth) to find out why it’s a local
favorite.
u Fat Boy Satay
Satay is a skewered barbecued meat served
with peanut sauce. Visit Lau Pa Sat at night and
you will see hawkers fanning the skewers over
hot charcoal. Everyone has their favorite, ours
is Fat Boy Satay!
