China And The West Against Japan: World At War 1931-1945 $46.00 This course will cover traditional interpretations of WWII in Asia and the Pacific. We will look at Japanese, Chinese and Western interpretations of the War in Asia. Emphasis will be up on the reasons for Japanese expansion, its conflict with other rising powers and the course of the war, with emphasis on the war in mainland Asia. The legacy of WWII in Asia-Pacific and its effects on legitimacy of rule in countries and current international relations will also be discussed. Themes In Medieval And Renaissance Art $46.00 This course will involve viewing, hearing background about and discussing a variety of images of both Italian and Flemish medieval and Renaissance art. It will be organized into themes (mostly relating to Christian worldviews of the period) such as The Annunciation, The Madonna and Child, The Last Supper, The Betrayal of Christ, The Crucifixion, and The Last Judgment. She was a founding member of the Bloomsbury Group, a ground breaking author, editor, biographer, essayist, diarist and arts critic and a co-owner, operator and bookbinder for the Hogarth Press. Along with her husband Leonard, a political theorist, this small indie press would go on to publish T.S. Eliot, E.M. Forster, Sigmund Freud, and of course Virginia Woolf. Judging The Hero In History And Literature $46.00 This team-taught course invites students to distinguish between a selection of heroes and villains: the good from the bad, the fools from the mad. The course compares two figures each week to evaluate how history and literature distinguish the hero from the villain. The Homeric heroes Achilles and Odysseus will be followed by pairs of historical figures from the Reformation on to the present century. The instructor, who has lived in Flanders and also in Canada, has a unique close perspective of the courage and sacrifice men and women made in WWI. All aspects of this time will be covered. In this course science will mesh with both Art and Poetry, as we first become familiar with nephology, the earth science study of clouds. We will then analyze how artistic Masters, such as van Gogh, painted their clouds. Poems and songs centered on clouds, will also be interwoven with this visual stimuli. In the second part of each class, armed with ‘tricks of the trade’ for creating powerful skies, you will create your own acrylic landscape paintings (bring some reference photos you might want to use). Canada’s Iconic Group Of Seven $46.00 Celebrate Canada by immersing yourself in a study of the iconic Group of Seven painters. Begin by realizing there were many more than seven in this group! Learn how this group formed, continued and became successful beginning in 1920, and how the cultural and political times influenced their styles. Following the first hour of each class, students will paint in the style of these Canadian Masters, using reference photos they have brought from home. All levels welcome - experience the joy of creativity!
