Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Advent which is called in Latin “Gaudete” Sunday
for the Latin word meaning “Rejoice.” On this Sunday we wear the Liturgical color “rose.”
Rose is a lighter shade of violet. You could also see it as violet becoming white, the litur-
gical color of Christmas. The violet of Advent is a darker color, almost a blue violet that
harmonizes with the diminishing sunlight of the winter season giving place to light. The
transition from night to light characterizes the winter season. The violet of Advent gives
place to the bright white of Christmas joy.
The violet color of Advent is a dark and penitential color. It is also the ancient color for
royalty and wealth. Through baptism we have been immersed in light and life. We have
become children of the light and given the royalty of being children of the King of Heaven! So, violet expresses well
both aspects: darkness and royalty. As “children of the light” we are never in complete darkness. The Messiah has
come. We have been redeemed. The light that is God has come to dwell in our souls. The Father has delivered us
from darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgive-
ness of all our sins. And yet, we wait for Christ to come. We wait for eternal life. We wait for the redemption of our
bodies. We are still in a valley of tears. For now, we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face.
But even in the night of this life, this expectancy fills us with joy. We are experiencing the foretaste of the good
things to come, The Church invites us to “look up and raise our heads, because our redemption is near at hand.

ADOPT A FAMILY, PAY IT FORWARD!
There is still time to adopt a family for Christmas!
It’s not too late for you to participate in St Michael’s “Adopt a Family, Pay it Forward” program. This program serves a limited
number of families that are in unfortunate situations and are not getting help from anywhere else. Without your help, these
families will not have any presents to make their season a little brighter. When you “adopt” a family, you agree to buy a few
gifts for each member of the family based on a provided “wish list.” We will do our best to match you with a size of family
you desire, however we cannot guarantee children of a particular age or family composition. A family can adopt directly,
or this can be an excellent Christmas service project for a prayer group, school group, co-workers, etc. It is also a great way
to involve the kids directly in helping others. To sign up to “Adopt a Family & Pay it Forward”, please email Rachel Mon-
teverdi at rmonteverdi@gmail.com. The subject line of the email should read ‘Adopt a Family, Pay it
Forward’. If unable to email, please call (919) 327 - 7626.
Please consider bringing a little joy to families who need help!
WANTED – ADOPT A FAMILY SHOPPERS! We also need volunteers to go shopping for families
from donations we receive from our generous parishioners who’ve not had time to shop. If you’d be
willing to help in this way, please email to Rachel Monteverdi or Sharon Braswell at stmadoptafamily@gmail.com
PRIEST RETIREMENT
The final collection of 2019 for the priest retirement
fund will be next Sunday, Dec. 22. Please consider
giving back to all the priests who have helped you

HONDURAS SISTER PARISH
Thanks for your support of the Sister Parish Education Campaign this year. A total of $69,032.75
was collected to support the school and agricultural education programs at our Sister Parish in
Honduras—Nuestra Señora de Suyapa. We are able to sponsor 840 children for the 2019 aca-
demic year starting in February. Many thanks for your prayers and financial support.
A delegation from the Sister Parish Ministry is visiting our sister parish in Honduras in January. If
you’re a sponsor of a student in Honduras, this is an excellent opportunity to write a letter to your
student.
We encourage you write a letter and tell your student
about you and your family. Students always like to receive
pictures of their sponsors and their family members. The
letters should be in Spanish. You may drop your letter at DIOCESAN ADVENT PENANCE SERVICES
the mail bin by the information desk in the gathering space Dec. 17 at 7pm - Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral,
or bring it to the church office. All letters must be received St. Joseph, St. Thomas Aquinas NCSU Campus Ministry,

2020 St. Michael Habitat Build. We have already collected $20,654.00 so we are
nearly 1/3rd of the way to our goal of $65,000.00. Thanks to your generosity, we
are off to a great start, but there is more work to be done. As we head into the
holiday season we hope you enjoy time with your loved ones. We will keep our
progress up to date as we look forward to breaking ground on this St. Michael
- Habitat House in March 2020. We are looking forward to seeing many of you
among the St. Michael volunteers who will help build the new home. Your gifts of
time, talent, and treasure will enable us to extend the giving season into the New

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW)
Children’s Liturgy introduces children to both the liturgical structure and participation in worship so the grow in the un-
derstanding and love of God. At St. Michael, CLOW welcomes all children Pre-K (age 4) through second grade during the
8:30am Sunday Mass. CLOW is in session Sept - May.
At the beginning of Mass, the children are invited forward and dismissed with a Catechist to take part in the Liturgy of the
Word. The children will then return to Mass during Offertory to celebrate the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Many Catechists are
needed to run the CLOW Ministry. Lesson plans and materials are provided.

RESPECT LIFE
Are you thinking about joining fellow parishioners at the National
March for Life in Washington, D.C. this coming January 24? As in
previous years, St. Michael the Archangel will have chartered buses
to help get you there at nominal cost (watch the bulletin for details).
Bus captains are John Flanagan (flanjv@yahoo.com) and Juan Resendiz
(angeldemetal12@gmail.com).
Respect Life Column - Once per month, this ministry writes a short column related to various respect life issues.
In national news about respect for life, Tennessee law professor and USA Today columnist Glenn Reynolds posted a blog entry
at “Instapundit” on December 2 summarizing a New York Times story, “How a Divided Left is Losing the Battle on Abortion.” The
problem (according to the NYT) -- is that “The Democratic Party has rejected the message that drove its politics since President Bill
Clinton’s administration — that abortion should be ‘safe, legal and rare’ — and embraced abortion rights with few stipulations.
Every leading Democratic presidential candidate has fallen in line.”
While it looks at what it calls “cultural, financial, and political divisions” among abortion advocates, the New York Times is not a
pro-life publication, so the story says nothing about the more significant problem of treating some pregnancies like diseases, or
recognizing the gift of human life only when it seems convenient to do so.
