St. Paul’s Welcomes Fr. Walter Hobgood & Gail
Dear Friends in Christ,
Gail and I are really looking forward to being with you again. It has been 2 years since we were last here.
We felt truly blessed to have spent that time with you and feel blessed again that you would allow us to
come back at this time in your journey.
I wrote back then: “I am hopeful that in the weeks and months ahead, you the people of St. Paul’s, will rise
to the occasion and open your hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit in genuine discernment to where God is
leading us. It will be a future that is different to the past yet rooted in the traditions of the past.”
With the very capable leadership and support provided by Father Freeman you have moved toward a new future through
discernment and prayer. I was extremely impressed by the parish profile that has been published. You are to be complimented.
Little did we know that we would be faced with a global pandemic that has impacted our world, our country, our communities,
and our church family. With faith and prayer, we will survive the short-term impacts of this situation and create new ways of
carrying the gospel out into the world that are different from the past yet rooted in our traditions.
We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new friends in the coming weeks and months.
Prayerfully,
Walter+

                                        Albany Episcopalians for NAMI
Our local Episcopal churches will be supporting NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) by forming a team for their virtual
fundraiser NAMI Walks Your Way. St Paul’s and St Mark’s and St John’s have each budgeted $1000 to this effort. NAMI is
the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans
affected by mental illness. It is made up of 600 local affiliates who work to raise awareness and provide support and
education about mental illness and recovery. 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 6 kids have symptoms of mental illness each year. It is
expected that during and after the Covid-19 pandemic these statistics will be much higher. NAMI Albany is a very active
group that provides free classes and support groups for those with mental illness and their families and the proceeds for the
NAMI Walks finance these programs.

In past years the NAMI walk has been a 5K held in several locations in Georgia, but because of Covid-19 it will not be safe for
large crowds to gather, therefore on October 10th, NAMI Walks will be a virtual experience and joined by NAMI Walks
across the country. NAMI Walks Your Way means what it sounds like: participants get to make NAMI Walks their own. You
can walk a 5K—through your neighborhood, around your backyard, on your treadmill, or you can do something else
meaningful and fun to celebrate our virtual walk day. It will be decided within the next few weeks how we want to do this
virtually. Please contact me with ideas because we want this to be fun. You can join the team by going to:

St. Paul's Welcomes Fr. Walter Hobgood & Gail - St. Paul's Episcopal Church ...
NOTE: This devotional is adapted from two that were posted online on Aug. 18, 2020, one by Bronwyn Clark Skov on the website d365.org, and one from the Almost
Daily Devotion online series by Christ Episcopal Church of Charlottesville, N.C. They were edited into a single devotional for the Aug 18 Vestry meeting at St. Paul’s.

This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one
than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:12-13
John serves up a tall order in this scripture. Are we really expected to give up our life for our friends? What does that even mean? We know that Jesus
gave up his life for all of us for all eternity, but are we really supposed to give up our lives that same way Jesus did?
In this time of pandemic, life and death have become scary and confusing. We can’t seem to make up their minds about the best way to do things.
People are blaming and shaming one another about a virus and how to deal with it. Churches, schools and other refuges, whether online or in person,
are usually thought to be safe spaces.
For many, however, nothing feels really safe right now.
Still, Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke to the Episcopal House of Bishops last week and reminded everyone that the pandemic will not last forever. A vaccine
will be found. The outbreak will turn around. People must hold onto hope, despite fear and frustration.
We can encourage one another. We can be thoughtful, considerate, and kind. By thinking about others instead of ourselves, and we can follow the
example of Jesus.
A PRAYER
Lord, bless us with compassion today, so we don’t worry too much about ourselves. Help us focus on being helpful to others. Help us be protectors of
others through our own actions, just as Jesus was a protector of his friends.
Let us be friends to those who have few friends, Let us find a friend when we feel lonely, Let us walk away from danger to safety,
Help us walk in the light and love of Jesus. Amen
