The Peter’s Pence Collection occurs yearly on the Sunday closest to June 29, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, as a sign that Catholics around the world are joined together in support of the Holy Father. Please give generously to this worthy cause. For more information about the mission of the Holy See or to donate online, visit www.peterspence.va/en.html. Dear St. Walter Families and Community Partners, It has been my true privilege to serve as principal of St. Walter for the past year. I can honestly say that my time here has been full of blessings. We have grown immensely, we have built relationships, and we have learned alongside each other as students, staff, parents, and community partners. We have created a culture of growth! When people hear about St. Walter School, the reputation is full of strength, kindness, innovation, and love. In a year of CANTS – we have proven that we CAN and we did! Over the past year, we have built a platform that has allowed innovative teaching practices that embrace 21st century skills and tools for our students. We have grown a strong community that has come together over hardships and has cele- brated much. St. Walter 2020-21 “CAN” Brag Sheet We Created Reopening Teams The Academics Reopening Team provided guidance and support to our school community to ensure the academic rigor was upheld for both the in-person and remote learning environments. By adhering to our academic goals, this was evi- dent in our final iReady Diagnostic! There was a 30% growth from the first diagnostic (fall 2020) to the final diagnostic (Spring 2021). Over 70% of students in grades K-8 tested at grade level or above on their spring diagnos- tic! Congratulations to the teachers, staff, students, and parents for your continued hard work and support! We created built-in considerations for the social/emotional needs of students that were supported with meaningful and relevant prayer and ongoing faith formation. We treated everyone we met with KINDNESS. We were able to celebrated mass as a school community! The Health and Safety Reopening Team created an arrival and dismissal plan that included “Wellness Checks” when students entered the building. The team designed a plan for regular cleaning and disinfecting that focused on shared spac- es, commonly touched areas, and bathrooms. We “CAN” have FUN…and we did! All our hard work paid off by having some fun! Our students were able to enjoy recess time with their classmates. We celebrated our different cultural ethnicities with games and food! I will miss our morning prayers and reflection, the all- school BINGO competitions, and the community service projects. I’ve enjoyed having these fun times together. We put a new twist on an old tradition with our Olympic Field Day Event! This event is one of my favorite of the year and it did not disappoint. Each class represented a different country, because of our awesome teachers, they took this idea and ran with it! The students learned all about the country that they represented! I could not have accomplished this without the team of teachers and a pastor who work very hard to make St. Walter suc- cessful, ensure that every student thrives, and is well grounded in their path of lifelong learning. A HUGE thank you to all! We’ve built a welcoming and positive school community where teachers, parents, and community volunteers are ap- preciated and supported. Saying goodbye is never easy; however, I have full confidence in the shared mission and vision we have established here at St. Walter School. I have been humbled by how the St. Walter community has embraced me as a leader, and I am so grateful for the people and ideas you have entrusted to my care. St. Walter School has been an excellent place to work! Names change, but the legacy lives on… With heartfelt gratitude and much love, Veronica Skelton Cash June 20, 2021 Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
St. Walter: Our Patron Saint Who was St. Walter? We really know very little about him. He was born in Aquitaine, France and became an Augustinian Priest. For the last 38 years of his life, he was abbot of L’Esterp, France. “He was renowned for his priestly success with sinners. Father Peterson insists he did not know the latter fact when he chose the name.” Originally, our statue of St. Walter was located outside, on the southwest corner of 118th Street and Western Avenue. It was moved inside due to concerns about weathering and is now located in the foyer between church and school. If only our statue of St. Walter could talk and share stories of all of the events our parish and school has been a part of for these past 64 years! Here are some pictures of a some of those wonderful events sent in by our parish community. Sources: Dedication publication, 1956; St. Walter Parish, Our First 25 Years, 1978 Weddings Our parish has had 858 weddings since 1953. Marriages were taking place even before our parish building was built! Do you recognize this lovely couple? It is Gerald and Lori Campione in June 1980. The celebrant is Fr. Thomas L. Brown, the second pastor of our parish. Note that the mosaic depiction of The Last Supper was originally installed behind the altar. It is now is on the east wall of the foyer. This piece is cloisonné enamel and was created by artist Harold Martin specifically for our parish. Photo credit: Mrs. Lori Campione St. Walter Catholic Church Chicago • Blue Island IL

Praying Together The day we have been waiting for has finally arrived! We are now in Phase 5 and many Archdiocesan restrictions have been lifted. Carefully read the following changes to the protocols for attending Mass: th Any entrance may be used – the parking lot, Western Ave. or 118 St. No registration or sign-in is required. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrances for those who wish to use it. Masks are not required for those who have been fully vaccinated. It is recommended that unvaccinated visitors continue to wear a mask. Anyone who is fully vaccinated may continue to wear a mask if they choose to do so. Holy water fonts are filled with holy water. We will continue seating every other bench, but an usher is not needed to escort you to a designated seat. Our hymnals and Music Missal issues are back in the benches and singing is highly encouraged whether masked or not. We resume having people bring up the gifts in the offertory procession. Donation envelopes will be collected by ushers using the baskets during the Offertory. Physically offering the sign of peace is permitted again. For the reception of communion, people can process in two lines as before. No sanitizing of the hands before receiving communion is necessary. Priests and communion ministers, however, need to sanitize their hands before distributing communion. The reception of the Precious Blood will not be given until further notice. After Mass, there is no need for ushers to escort us out of the benches. We are free to leave church from any exit and the handicapped door and ramp are once again reserved for the use of the handicapped. If you are interested in resuming your ministry as a Eucharistic Minister, Commentator or Reader, we would love to have you participate. Please talk with Fr. Jim after Mass or call the rectory to let us know you’re interested. The hope is that eventually all of our liturgical ministers would be comfortable in their role both here at St. Walter and at St. Benedict. From Fr. Jim: I wish to express my gratitude to our Health & Safety Team who have done a phenomenal job in keeping us safe during the pandemic. I would also like to thank all of our parish community for their patience and understanding by cooperating with these protocols for the past fifteen months. Pope's Mass Intention for June— Each year, the Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention each month. The Pope’s Mass Intention for June is: The Beauty of Marriage. Let us pray for young people who are preparing for marriage with the support of a Christian community: may they grow in love, with generosity, faithfulness and patience..
