Stillmeadow Youth Parents
        Winter Guide 2018

                       BEFORE

6 Forthis reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of
God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For
the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us
power, love and self-discipline.
                                         2 Timothy 1:6-7

        Stillnaz.com/youthevents
Here at Stillmeadow…

We do youth ministry because we believe
1. that God created each youth for a purpose
2. that God can transform each youth from the inside out
3. that transformation in Him happens best with others

We do events because they create space for youth
1. to build relationships with other God-following youth
2. to grow in their love and understanding of Jesus
3. to examine and commit every part of their lives to God
4. to discover their gifts through serving, leading & giv-
   ing
5. to open their eyes and deepen their compassion for
   the needy

We believe parents are important because
1. they are the reason youth are here (in more ways than
   one!)
2. their affirmation is the longest lasting
3. they provide the most consistent voice in the lives of
   youth
4. they set an example for youth with their actions

STAY IN TOUCH
At our regular youth ministry activites, we have an open door
policy for parents. Also, if you have any questions about your
youth or about our youth ministry, please feel free to contact
Pastor Josh at 717-577-6446 or pastorjosh@stillnaz.com.
Regular Youth Ministry Activities
In addition to watching parents and adults model the Christian life,
youth need space to live the Christian life with their peers. Our
hope in the regular youth ministry activities is to remind our
students that they belong in God’s family, that they are called by
God to listen to and follow Him in all things, and that they can make
a difference for Him in their world.

Remix, Tuesday Nights, 7:00-8:45
Students from 6th-12th grade gather in the Worship Center to
celebrate in worship & connect in discipleship groups. Our
nights are structured so that all students gather in a large
group for singing & a brief teaching. We then divide into age &
gender specific discipleship groups to dive into life together,
read scripture, share stories, & support each other in prayer.

Open Gym, Tuesday Nights, 6-7
Every Tuesday we have open gym for students to come and
play basketball or whatever in the gym. This has been a great
way for us to connect with youth from our neighborhood.

Stillmeadow Teen University, Sunday Mornings, 11am
Scripture reminds us that we love God not only with our
hearts but also with our minds. STU gives us an opportunity
for the reworking of our minds through offering a variety of
courses throughout the year. We meet every Sunday at 11am
on the east wing (i.e left side) of the worship center.

LifePath, First Fridays, 7-10:30
Every month our students come together to serve at LifePath
Christian ministries through worship leading, waiting tables,
praying...but most of all reminding the people we are serving
that they are loved by our Creator.

Remix Ministry Teams and Kids Ministry
We want our students to be a part of making youth ministry
happen at Stillmeadow, so students can serve on the Remix
worship team, media team or greeting team. We also encour-
age teens to serve in the Children’s ministry.
Parents Connect Group

Parenting is one the greatest human joys.
It is also one of the hardest human tasks.
We want parents to succeed. So Burdette and Nedra Lahr
lead a group dedicated to helping parents navigate the years
              between 6th through 12th grade.

Sundays during the STU Hour we offer a group designed
by two parents of teenagers for other parents of teenagers.
The goal of this group is simple:
Connecting parents of teens with each other and growing to-
gether while learning important Christian relational skills that
are useful in parenting and the rest of life.
Want to join? Sign up here…or show up next Sunday!

NAVIGATING DATING AND SEXUALITY WITH YOUR TEEN
Our series for January and February is a critical conversation
for parents in today’s hypersexualized culture. We hope you
                         can join us.

the class. Here are a few of the nuggets she shared this last year. If

Parent Connect Note #2
Phew, that attitude! It does not take much when hormones are
raging in the throws of puberty for teen attitudes to fly! In these
moments, I am often quick to call them out on it, and admittedly,
get an attitude myself. But I am learning not to over-react and look
past the attitude to what is really going on for my teen at the time-
what is fueling this attitude? Are they tired, hungry, distracted,
anxious or stressed, or are they just being selfish? Maybe they are
not feeling heard, understood or cared about. We tend to quickly
jump on our kids' behaviors rather than looking a little deeper at
their hearts. What is the underlying, deeper cause of this bad atti-
tude? Don't get me wrong, bad attitudes need to be addressed and
not excused; however, there is a reason for it. Check it out by ask-
ing your teen, "What is really going on here?" And check your own
attitude as well! "Out of the abundance ofthe heart the mouth
speaks." Matthew 12:34
Parent Connection Note #13
In the Parents Connect group, our conversation focused on the
topic of anger. When our teens push our buttons, how do we react?
There is a difference between reacting (not thinking, just saying
and doing whatever comes out in the moment because we are emo-
tionally charged) and responding (taking a moment to take a deep
breath and align our head and heart with God and then speaking).

When anger comes, it alerts us to pain and we want to release it
and make it stop quickly. The roots of anger are hurt (which in-
cludes disappointment), fear, and frustration. We must check our
hearts. We are not responsible for what our children do and how it
affects us emotionally, but we are responsible for our actions in
response to our emotions. Scripture tells us that 'out of the heart
the mouth speaks." One of our greatest challenges is to be "quick
to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry."
WHAT IS THE FRUIT OF YOUR
           HOUSEHOLD?
In Galatians Paul names the fruit of the spirit as love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness
and self-control.
Our hope is to lead our children to exhibit these virtues in
their lives. Children and youth learn these Christ-like virtues
by imitating what they see and practicing his love.
Can they imitate you? Are you giving them spiritual habits
to practice?
Many households are full of apathy, impulsiveness, quarrels,
bitterness. But we believe with Christ and good habits, we
can have households that show His Spiritual fruit.
So, we encourage you this year to choose new habits that will
help your children grow in the fruit of the Spirit.
There is nothing more important than the keystone habits of
daily prayer and scripture reading and regular participation
in the life of the church, but here are some suggested habits
that correlate with specific virtues and help overcome specif-
ic vices.

  Virtue Vice Spiritual Habit
     Joy Bitterness  Decrease Complaining
                                           Share thankfuls
   Peace Quarrelling  Apologize First
                                            Forgive Quickly
Self-Control Impulsiveness  Have device free times
                                   Use food portion control
    Love Apathy  Serve others
 Ask how you can help
The Fuego Challenge

This school year is the year
of Fuego.
           The year of fire.

 We want youth to encounter the
    God described as the “consuming
    fire.” (Hebrews 12:29)

 We want youth to experience God’s “fire in their
    hearts” like Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 20:9)

 We want youth to “fan into flame” the gifts that
have been given them. (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

So this school year, we are giving weekly Fuego Chal-
lenges. These challenges will be threefold: 1. read
scripture, 2. pray and 3. take a step of Fuego faith.

We encourage you to walk with your child in this
challenge. Either prod them to do the challenge or do
it with them!

Sign up for the challenges and download the chal-
lenge cards here: www.stillnaz.com/fuegochallenge

Fundraising
NYC, mission weeks, retreats cost money. And money
doesn’t grow on trees like it used to. One way that we try to
help our families is through regular fundraisers during the
school year.

TEEN ACCOUNTS
When a student raises funds the money goes into an account
that is designated for them. And they can use those funds for
whatever youth event they’d like. Some students have paid
for all their events with fundraising money!

If you ever have a question about what’s in your youth’s teen
account, you can contact Brad Hankey (hjjnb@comcast.com)
or Patsy Moses (pmoses@stillnaz.com).

UPCOMING FUNDRAISERS
Pretzel Sandwich Sales:
We have 5 sales every school year (September, November,
January, February and April). Forms are available at the
youth booth. Students sell sandwiches, turn in their orders,
then help make and deliver them.

Weis/Giant Gift Cards
We earn 5% of every Weis and Giant gift cards purchased
from the youth booth. The earnings from this fundraiser go
to the major mission trips and NYC. Parents can support this
by working in the booth, buying cards, or encouraging others
to purchase the cards.

Mulch Day: May 5
This not only raises great funds, but also is a fun way to build
community with our youth and families every spring!
STU Schedule
At 11AM every Sunday, Stillmeadow Teen University brings
youth together to pray and play together and discuss the im-
portant topics of the day in light of the character of Jesus and
scripture.

Remix News
We want to keep families in the loop of what we are teaching
and doing at Remix.

REMIX D-GROUP SERVANT TEAMS
It is critical for youth to not only receive, but to participate in
the delivery of the message of Jesus. So we’re building “D-
Group Servant Teams” where each d-group will lead various
aspects of a Remix night. Here’s the schedule:

1st Tuesdays: Middle School Ladies (1.02, 2.06, 3.06, 4.03)
2nd Tuesdays: High School Men (1.09, 2.13, 3.20, 4.10)
3rd Tuesdays: High School Ladies (01.16, 02.20, 3.20, 4.17)
4th Tuesdays: Middle School Men (01.23, 2.27, 3.27, 4.24)

Winter Topics:
January through March: Love > Fear
We will be taking Paul's instructions on love in 1 Corinthians
13 and breaking it down week by week. So, we'll look at what
it means to follow Christ and love others through patience,
through not being rude, through humility, etc. In a world full
of hatred and indifference and fear, it takes courage and faith
to live out the agape love of Christ and we want to equip our
youth to do just that.

Party Times
We like to throw parties at Remix. These are perfect times for
students to invite friends!

Remix FOL Preview Night: Jan 23

Dodgeball Tourney: April 24

5th Grade Preview Night: May 1

Graduate Night: May 22

Remix Family Summer Kick Off: June 5
