Meeting with Tavish Scott MSP

HISA is the Students’ Association for UHI and
its partners. As a student of Shetland College
UHI you are automatically a member.

What makes it so different is that it represents
everyone. That means that both Higher and
    Further Education students are represented
    regionally by the HISA President,
    Vice-President for Higher Education and
Vice-President for Further Education. Archery session

HISA is run by students to help students. They
also organise clubs and societies and they
are always there to listen to you.

In Shetland you are represented by a total
of 3 HISA Depute Presidents. There is a HISA
Depute who covers Shetland College and
NAFC Marine Centre. There are a further 2
positions - a HISA Officer based at NAFC & a
HISA Officer for the Lerwick campus.
                                                           Halloween pumpkins
There will be elections early in Semester 1 so
watch out in our email bulletins and on
Campus for more information on the
elections and how you can become more

Take a moment to read over this health and
safety information.
Emergency evacuation and Fire procedures
The fire alarm is a single tone klaxon sound. When the alarm is
activated:
• Remain calm and leave the building by the nearest safe exit
• Do not stop to pick up belongings
• Do not use a lift
• Assemble in Assembly Points (upper College car park or Train
Shetland car park) - see diagrams below
• Do not re-enter until you have been told to do so

If you discover a fire:
• Operate the nearest fire alarm by smashing the glass and leave the
    building
• Do not attempt to fight the fire

Students outwith Gremista campus e.g. Mareel or learning centres
should familiarise themselves with the evacuation procedure for the
building they are in.

NB - A fire test is carried out every Friday at 3.45pm; you do not need to
evacuate the building unless the alarm is continuous.

Students are reminded there’s no smoking or vaping on Campus 6
Student Handbook 2018/19 - University of the ...
First Aid
First Aid boxes are located throughout the building.
Notices are located in each room with names of
first aiders and their contact numbers. If you require
a first aider speak to a member of staff or contact
reception.

Absence
If you have been absent from class you must complete a
self-certification form. These can be collected from reception
and returned to your Course Lecturer. Download the form from
www.shetland.uhi.ac.uk/self-certification
If you are absent for more than 5 days you are required to produce a doctor’s
certificate.

If you miss an examination due to illness or any other legitimate
reason (for example bereavement), you are required to notify
the College that you will be absent prior to the examination (and
in the case of illness you may be required to produce a doctor’s
certificate). Please note that failure to notify the College that
you will be absent from an examination is counted as a failed
attempt.

           Remember to Sign In/Out
If you leave the campus during class time or if you arrive late for
class then sign In/Out at reception. If you’re going to be absent
for whatever reason phone reception on 01595 771000.

Attendance at Core and Essential Skills Classes
FE students should note that it is very likely that your course of
study will include attendance at Essential Skills classes. Many
of the assessments for these subjects are integrated with
assessments in your vocational subject area and the skills you
learn are crucial to you being successful in your course. Any
non-attendance or progress issues will be reported to your
Course Leader and could lead to your education bursary being
withdrawn. These units are also required to progress onto
higher level courses.

7 Let us know at the College reception if your contact details change
