elimination of the Hyde Amendment, and amendment of spending
legislation that is enjoyed broad bi-partisan and public support since
its introduction in the 1970s. As Bishop Zubik wrote in a letter to priests and deacons of the diocese last week: The
Hyde Amendment was passed in 1976 by the U.S. House of Representatives. As part of the federal government’s
annual appropriations legislation, it prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or
to save the life of the mother. Some powerful members of the U.S. Congress want to take away the Hyde
Amendment to force taxpayer dollars to pay for abortions especially for disadvantaged women. Taxpayer dollars
would be far better spent by supporting women in crisis pregnancies and struggling mothers so that no mother
would be pressured into procuring an abortion.
In an effort to maintain the Hyde Amendment, it is critically important for Catholics at this time to reach out to their
legislators to strongly support this important protection for the lives of unborn children and their mothers. Please
encourage your faithful to reach out to their legislators asking them to protect the Hyde Amendment.
For your convenience, a link to sign the petition in support of the Hyde Amendment can be found here: https://

Inspiration for the week
Are we willing to be taught by God? If we are, then we will begin
to see things and make judgments using a Divine lens. Often, we
perceive things with purely human eyes and reference points.
When we do this, reality can lose its Divine spark and we miss
what God is trying to say. When using human eyes exclusively,
Jesus is at best perceived simply as a prophet who has some wise
things to say.
The human element has a difficult time seeing Jesus’ divinity and
recognizing him as the Bread of Life that comes down from
heaven. We can easily get stuck on Jesus’ human associations
and overlook the marvelous wonders God wants us to see.
If we really allow ourselves to be taught by God, we will then
come to see the truth about Jesus and the abundant everlasting life God offers. Jesus becomes the
key that unlocks all of our relationships: with God, others, ourselves, and creation. He, as the true and
lasting bread from heaven, shows us the gifts of faith, hope, and love that God bestows on us.
Through this divine lens we see that all life sparkles and glows with God’s love.
Lourdes Virtual Pilgrimage Experience ™
Sunday, August 29 † 2:00 PM
St. Valentine Church
Like an actual Pilgrimage to Lourdes, the Lourdes Virtual Pilgrimage Experience™ is a
holy encounter with God under the watchful care of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Virtual
Pilgrimage Experience re-creates a pilgrimage to Lourdes without ever leaving our
pews.
This prayerful experience draws pilgrims nearer to God in the company of Our Lady as
they are guided through a prayerful visit to the Grotto, the experience of the water,
prayer in a Rosary procession and a Eucharistic blessing. Hope you can attend!
Mass & Prayers for Discernment & Healing
Part of the mission of the Pittsb urgh
Fraternity of Priests is to make known the
gifts of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church
and in the lives of all people. To this end, they
celebrate the gifts of discernment, prophecy
and healing so young and old alike may know
how the Holy Spirit is alive and active for
those seeking physical, spiritual, emotional healing, and for guidance in life choices and struggles.
Priests who are members of this Fraternity will celebrate Mass on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11 th, at 7:00
PM at ST. BONIFACE CHURCH, 2208 East St., Pittsburgh, 15212. All are invited to attend. Immediately
following Mass, attendees will have the opportunity to pray with a priest.
“But I will restore to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord”

50th Wedding Anniversary Mass
Each year, the Diocese recognizes the crowning achievement of those couples celebrating
their 50th wedding anniversary with a Mass, presided by Bishop Zubik, at St. Paul’s Cathedral,
followed by a cookie reception. The 2021 Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass is scheduled
for October 10th at St. Paul Cathedral.
If you will be celebrating your 50th anniversary this year, and would like to be included in the
special anniversary Mass please contact Cindy Gilfoyle at cgilfoyle@olhpgh.org or 412-833-
0661 no later than August 30th with the following information: husband's name, wife's name (including maiden
name), mailing address, and phone number.
Participants will receive a personal invitation with instructions after the parish submits the names of those who
plan to attend. Should limitations of guests be required, couples will be notified prior to the event.
Protecting God’s Children (PGC) was introduced in 2003 and was required for all
volunteers and employees. Recertification is now required every three years. If it has
been more than three years since you completed the Protecting God’s Children
Workshop, you will need to be recertified by taking the Protecting God’s Children
Maltreatment 3.2 & Vulnerable Adults Combined.
Go to virtusonline.or g, log in and complete the online class. If we have your correct email listed, you should
have received an email from Virtus letting you know that you need this recertification. If your email has
changed in the past five years, please call Donna Rech at 412-833-6662 to update your new email address.
If you do not have email, I can help you with your recertification. In addition, if you no longer wish to volunteer,
please let me know so I can archive your file until you choose
(or not) to resume volunteering.

Students Provide Service
Last week Seton LaSalle Catholic High School held
the 2021 Summer Service Program! Five students
from Our Lady of Hope Parish participated along
with students from six other parishes. We are so
proud of our students who joined in serving our
Catholic communities this summer.
Along with Our Lady Of Hope Parish participants,
students from Resurrection Parish, St.
Catherine Laboure-St. Louis, St. Michael the
Archangel Parish, St. Paul of the Cross Parish, St.
Teresa of Kolkata Parish, and Triumph of the Holy
Cross Parish also participated.
Father Mike Ackerman spoke to the group on
Thursday, inspiring the young people to remain
committed to their Catholic faith through many
different avenues…”service to others being” high on
the list.

Our Lady of Hope Parish
All men of Our Lady of Hope are invited
to participate in a Men’s Retreat at St.
Paul of the Cross Retreat Center,
September 24-26.
Nestled on the South Side Slopes, the
Retreat Center is a place offering
comfort and relaxation to nourish the
spirit. It is a place where you can rest
your body from the stress of everyday life
and reflect on your relationship with
God. The priests at St. Paul’s often say, “If
you don’t need a retreat, then you
certainly deserve one.”
Unlike the saying, “what happens in
Vegas, stays in Vegas,” what happens at
the retreat will come home. You will
return a better husband, a better father,
and a better Catholic man.
Please treat yourself to an amazing
weekend at this annual retreat.
