The Dual Language program at Sunset Valley is designed to ensure that all students become bilingual, biliterate, and multicultural with the ability to meaningfully engage with
their learning in an increasingly global society.
Campus Vision
The Dual Language Program for Sunset Elementary School is an educational approach to provide literacy and content instruction to all students through two languages, promote
bilingualism and biliteracy, grade level academic achievement in both English and Spanish, and multicultural competence for all students. The goal is to prepare students for the
future with abilities to
listen, speak, read, and write in both English and Spanish, as well as develop an appreciation for different cultures. The Dual Language Program provides children with the
opportunity to learn English and Spanish, while maintaining high academic standards. By 2021, 100% of our students will participate in our Dual Language model at Sunset
Valley.
Research shows that students who participate in well-implemented dual language programs perform at or above-grade level on district and state tests, as well as achieve
advanced levels of proficiency in two languages (Collier & Thomas, 1997). In addition, graduates from these programs have a head start on language requirements for college
and have enhanced employment opportunities.
Campus Values
We believe that students have a fundamental right to the Whole Child tenets, so the Sunset Valley community inspires lifelong 21st century learners to be academically
successful and socially responsible citizens.
WHOLE CHILD TENETS
Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.
Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.
Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.
Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.
Each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and participation in a global environment.
Texas Public Education Mission Statement
The mission of the public education system of this state is to ensure that all Texas children have access to a quality education that enables them to achieve their potential
and fully participate now and in the future in the social, economic, and educational opportunities of our state and nation. That mission is grounded on the conviction that a
general diffusion of knowledge is essential for the welfare of this state and for the preservation of the liberties and rights of citizens. It is further grounded on the conviction
that a successful public education system is directly related to a strong, dedicated, and supportive family and that parental involvement in the school is essential for the
maximum educational achievement of a child. (TEC Title 2, Ch 4, Sec.4.001)
Austin Independent School District Mission
Austin ISD educates more than 80,000 students and embraces 129 diverse school communities in one of the fastest-growing metroplexes in the country. In partnership with
our families and our community, AISD's mission is to provide a comprehensive educational experience that is high-quality, challenging and inspires all students to make a
positive contribution to society. We partner with world-class universities, innovative businesses, nonprofit organizations and engaged community leaders to prepare our
students for college, career and life.

Student Achievement Needs
The STAAR Reading data indicates the need of targeted instruction, differentiation, and aligment of the curriculum and the grade level standards.
In STAAR Math, our campus needs to close the gaps between white students and ELLs, SPED, Hispanic students, and economically disadvantaged students. The math
curriculum needs vertical alignment for students to be able to learn foundational math skills in the lower grades. While in the upper grades, they can learn, develop, and refine
their problem solving skills in math.
DMAC Solutions ® Page 3 of 7 7/12/2021Comprehensive Needs Assessment Student Achievement Summary Sunset Valley Elementary has many assets, but it needs to address the achievement/opportunity gap for students of color. The campus needs to address the needs of their Special Education students, Hispanic student population, Economically Disadvantaged studdents, and the English Language Learners since our data shows a decline in overall percentages for these subgroups. We are planning to address these needs by improving equity and opportunity gaps for all student groups through data analysis aimed at guiding differentiated instruction and personalized learning.
