Surf Life Saving New Zealand Mission
To prevent death and injury on New Zealand beaches
Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the national association representing 73 Surf
Life Saving Clubs in New Zealand. Around 15,000 people are members of SLSNZ. The
73 clubs are grouped for consultation and programme delivery purposes into local
regions, and are supported by Surf Life Saving New Zealand staff. These new
groupings were an outcome of the membership voting in a new and bold constitution
in September 2009. We are the largest water safety education provider in New
Zealand.
To achieve our mission we have a proactive beach safety strategy made up of a
broad public education campaign and surf life saving patrols.

To support our lifeguards on the beach we provide training and development
opportunities and a national Surf Sports programme. We have a national framework
of lifeguard and Surf Sports accreditation.
Orewa SLSC is one of 17 Clubs in the Northern Region. Orewa SLSC was formed in
1950 by members of Milford SLSC which had fallen into recess. At this time the
Estuary outflow travelled north along the beach and ended about where the club now
sits. This made the beach quite dangerous and was the reason that the club is sited
where it is. In the late 1950s the Air Force bombed the channel in the Estuary and
this changed the river out flow straight out to sea.
Clubbies originally stayed in a tent in the camping ground and later built a small shed
about where the public toilets are to the south of the Club. The first proper
clubhouse was opened in 1960. Funds were raised by the club building and
operating a skating rink on the Domain. This was closed in the early 1990s and the
remains can still be seen to the left of the Domain entry drive. The original
clubhouse structure is still incorporated into the building and is roughly where the
Lounge/Restaurant is. An upstairs addition was added in the late 1970s and further
additions made in the early 1990s to give the clubhouse its existing area.
Women were allowed to join as active members for the first time in 1972/73 and the
club added a Junior Surf section in 1974/75. In the early years members mainly
came from Auckland. This has changed since the late 1970s when the local
population started to grow significantly with most of our members now being local.

Welcome to Junior Surf
We wish to extend a warm welcome to all current and prospective Orewa Junior Surf
Lifesaving members and families to our Club.
Our Junior surf programme offers a family-friendly development platform
underpinned by our strong belief that it takes a village to develop a lifeguard. Our
focus is on building a strong foundation of surf knowledge and skills, fitness, water
safety and fun all within a safe and friendly environment.
Our approach fosters aspiring future lifeguards, athletes, and families looking to
engage with their local community and beach in a safe and fun way with family and
friends.
Junior surf is facilitated by our Coaches and supported by you, our family members
across all age groups, along with our Lifeguards.

We look forward to seeing you on the beach and hope you enjoy the experience as
much as we do!

Educate
We deliver Levels 1 - 6 of the SLSNZ Life Saving Program Curriculum with activities
tailored to each group and dependent on weather conditions.
Age appropriate development includes but is not limited to :

 Beach games – practising skills to stay safe on the beach while increasing speed,
    agility and responsiveness

 Water activities/games - using body boards/knee boards, entering and exiting the
water quickly and safely and may include mock rescues, understanding/
    identifying/managing/escaping a rip, etc.

 How to set up a beach patrol, tubes, IRBs, becoming a Rookie (13yrs+)
 Preventative actions - Being sun smart, teaching of surf safety rules – a number
of lifesaving rules depend on year group

 Resilience and responsiveness – beach flags, sprinting and relays (land and water
    based)
As we are a family-centered Club, we offer all foundation Junior development and
surf safety on the Sunday morning, with each group training alongside each other on
the beach. This supports family time and allows everyone to refuel after a fun
training session with our weekly sausage sizzle.

What we do not do
We do not teach swimming during Junior Surf Sunday sessions.
The Sunday sessions are structured appropriately for each age / ability group, and
children must be at the swimming level required for their appropriate age groups for
surf sport.
The local swim schools offer really great level of swimming lessons during the
summer season. Club Coaches will do additional ocean squad training for U12-U14
members who have achieved their 200m swim patch and working towards competing
at Regional and National Events.

Experience
Junior Surf offers all children an opportunity to develop and test surf lifesaving
knowledge and skills in various events based in the water (board, swimming and
rescues) and on land (sprints and flags) in both individual and team events.
The focus of these events is on applying newly acquired skills, building confidence
and competence and resilience and responsiveness in different conditions. We
believe this is an important part of the development of our junior members. All
children 7 years and older are encouraged to take part in the Interclub participation
carnivals.
The carnivals are a fun way to reinforce the skills the children are learning whilst
creating bonds of friendships that can span a lifetime. Carnivals are offered in both
the winter and summer seasons showcasing the application of surf lifesaving not only
on the beach but also in the pool .
Club Day offers the opportunity for our littlest Nippers to test their skills too!
You’ll need to remember to pack: plenty of snacks, water, sunscreen, towels, warm
jerseys, towel ponchos, club uniform and a positive attitude.

Exemplify
In our experience, children look up to those individuals demonstrating the behaviours
and skills we are teaching them on the beach. Because of this, we regularly invite
our older youth members to act as guest coaches to the younger ones.
This interaction between the age groups is particularly popular at our annual Junior
Family Surf Camp in Ruakaka, where the older children take leadership roles in a
number of activities over a four (4) day period.

We also invite guest coaches to our training sessions. These people are from all areas
of Orewa SLSC and include members of our life guard team, parents and past
members who may have competed before as well as our Surf Officials.. We all have
experiences to share and the more we are all actively involved as members of Orewa
SLSC, the more we all gain from our collective experiences.

Calling all volunteers
It takes a village to develop a lifeguard!
There are so many ways to involve every family member at our Club. There is
something for everyone! Being an active participant in a support role or in a front and
cent role means that our Club continues to grow and thrive in our community. Orewa
Surf Lifesaving is a great club that offers sports and fitness, a range of activities to
suit all age levels and abilities and an opportunity to give back to the New Zealand
public in a worthwhile and rewarding way.

Our Club is dependent on all our ‘membership family’ to deliver what we offer on the
beach. Areas where we need assistance include: being our water safety, assistant
coaching, organising the children or counting as they enter/exit the water, along with
supporting the fundraising side like cooking on the BBQ, or becoming a qualified Surf
Sport Official for carnivals.
As part of your associate membership, you are covered by SLSNR indemnity insur-
ance in the event of accident or injury. So get ready to jump in that water, help with
the BBQ or become a coach or Event Official.
We will support you with training and development if required.

(13 year olds in their last season of Juniors)

The Rookie Programme is designed to help Junior Surf members and young people
prepare to become a surf lifeguard or patrol support in the next or upcoming season.
The coaches aim is to promote “practical lifeguarding” to younger members and
develop strong ties between senior and junior members as a result of involvement.
The programme is incorporated into the U14 Sunday surf training sessions and all
culminated to the end of season Rookie Challenge. This competitive event
showcases the skills learned b the Rookie lifeguards as they compete to be the best
rookie club team in the Northern Region.
Rookie Lifeguarding is a fantastic bridge between Junior Surf and lifeguarding as it
sets young people up to transition into the role of active service with ease and
develop into great members of our club. The Rookie Programme is an opportunity for
our young members to go through the same incredible experiences, creating
friendships for life while giving back to the community!
Aim of the Rookie Lifeguard Program
 Develop the surf life saving skills of young members

 Provide a smooth transition from Junior to Senior life saving
 Provide a structured career path into active surf patrol

 Involve and encourage parents of Rookies to become involved in both
understanding and potentially entering into active service themselves
 Develop strong ties and relationships with Junior and Senior members as a
result of involvement and completing rookie patrol hours
 Club patrols benefit as the Senior patrols coach and support rookies with both
confidence and competence of practical life saving skills/knowledge
SVA programme
OSLSC supports our youth to log their service time, starting with their Rookie hours,
into the SVA Foundation programme https://service.sva.org.nz/.

The SVA provides a platform for NZ youth to get credit for all the volunteer service
they give back to their communities, across all activities they are involved. This is
logged by the student as they progress through yrs 9-12.
At the end of their high school journey, they can download a summary of all their
service to add to their CV and support their future endeavours.

Family and club days
Throughout the year, we offer fun social days for our entire club to get together and
enjoy the fun in the surf.
We have a Welcome day to kick start the year, a Family club day mid season to try
out our new learned skills against our peers, and ending the season with a Lifesaving
a-thon which demonstrates our core principles: Educate, Experience, Exemplify.
The formula is simple, bring the whole family, have fun in the surf with a mix of
activities, bring a shared plate for lunch and enjoy the community.

Keeping it Surf Safe
200m patch award
Junior Members within the U10-U14 age groups* have the opportunity to attain their
200m swim patch. This patch allows our Jr members to train on more advanced
equipment in water deeper than waist high. This certificate highlights a water
confidence and capability of returning to the beach in the event of getting separated
from their equipment. The patch must be re-attained each season.
To achieve this award, members must:

• Complete a 200 m ocean swim in under 7 mins

• buoys will be positioned in water over the child’s head and will be placed at 100m
    distance with guide rope below.
• the swim stroke should demonstrate a competent freestyle stroke
• Once the under 7 min swim is achieved, the child will continue and tread water
    for an additional 1 min
• Total time 8 mins
We run the 200m patch trials throughout the season at Sunday trainings.
*U8 children will be allowed to attempt their patch only at coaches recommendation.
1:5 adult /child ratio as water support
We require a minimum supervision ratio for all water activities of 1 adult to 5
children. This may increase when the water conditions are a bit rough. So parents,
make sure you bring your wetsuits. More parent helpers, the more children that can
go into the water at once.
Police Checks
In compliance with NZ law police checks are done on all adults with direct contact
with children. All results are notified to the club chairman and treated with utmost
confidentiality.

Surf Officials

From local surf carnivals through to our national championships, surf sport needs
great officials. Being a surf official is a rewarding way to stay involved and contribute
to surf sports and to meet others who share a common passion for our sport.

It is important to us to have sufficient numbers of qualified Surf Officials at events to
ensure the competition is conducted in a fair and correct manner as per the SLSNZ
Surf Sports and Junior Surf Competition Manuals.
Courses are run by Surf Life Saving Northern Region and date & booking info is
available on their website.
For more information around surf officials please contact

Orewa Surf Lifeguards
Orewa Beach is a relatively safe beach however its popularity still keeps patrolling
members busy over the summer period. Last season, we patrolled 3296 voluntary
hours, we performed 5 rescues, 16 people assisted to safety, 102 first aids and 13
searches. At its peak there are up to 3000 people on the beach and 500 enjoying the
water. These numbers are steadily increasing as Orewa's population grows.
The most actively patrolled area is normally set up at the most popular part of Orewa
Beach close to the Clubhouse, however the club still monitors its full 3km length and
patrols Wenderholm Regional Park to the north, in peak season.
Most rescue situations occur as a result of swimmers (of all ages) getting beyond
their depth in the periodic swells or being carried out by the strong ebb flow from
the estuary at the south end.
An ATV, inflatable rescue boats (IRB's) and First Aid room are an integral part of the
patrolling setup.
By becoming a surf lifeguard you can take the opportunity to train your body,
challenge your mind, develop and apply your leadership skills as well as join a fun
team of dedicated clubbies on an awesome beach.

Senior Surf Sports
As a qualified Surf Lifeguard you are able to participate in regular competition events
(Surf Sports) against lifeguards from other Surf Clubs. The objective of Surf Sports is
to improve the fitness and skill levels of lifeguards.
Surf Sports in the Senior part of the Club are different from the Junior Club in that
there is a wider range of events for Seniors and there are a number of team events.
In Senior Surf Sports most people tend to concentrate on only a few events.
All competitors in Surf sports must complete a refresher (as must all Lifeguards) and
complete a minimum number of patrolling hours each season. Pool rescue champs is
the one exception to this rule where you do not have to be a qualified lifeguard to
compete.
There are a number of Surf Sports Carnivals run throughout the season at District
and National levels.

Orewa SLSC offers formal coaching programmes for you to learn and develop skills in
the various individual disciplines and team events, being:
Beach Sprint & Flags Board and Board Rescue
Surf Ski & Double Ski Surf Boat
    IRB Racing (qualifications required)
Equipment is provided by the club.
