WELCOME TO THE OFFICIAL

    CLAPTON FOOTBALL CLUB
             OFFICIAL HOME OF THE “TONS”

A warm welcome also to Cobham's officials, officers, supporters and
players here at Parkside, home to Aveley FC.

Congratulations to both teams in reaching the last 64 teams in the
    Buildbase FA Vase 2020 challenge.

The Clapton team you see here today is a testament to what hard work
can achieve, when you have dedication and make the sacrifice. This
management and coaching team have been able to create a very young
team and gel it with experience. That combination has seen us reach this
    stage of the competition.
On an even more historical front, the last 64 is the furthest Clapton
Football Club has reached in this competition, notwithstanding we have
won the Amateur FA Cup 5 times.

Both teams are some of the foundation members of British footballing
history, although Clapton is Cobham’s senior by 8 years, both teams have
promoted this game to what it is currently. Nevertheless, we are both here
today to win. We all are looking forward to an entertaining game.

Wishing all those involved with Cobham a safe journey home and a merry
Christmas and a prosperous 2021 season.

To all you Clapton supporters, well what can we say? You have witnessed
your club’s journey and have been an integral part of its continuing
growth and getting stronger. Have a good one, stay safe and let's
z continue our journey in 2021.

HISTORY
Cobham Football Club was formed on Friday 5 November 1886 by
Founding President, Hon. Alan Egerton MP and villagers connected with
the local Coffee Tavern. The Vicar offered to supply it with a football.
On 4 November 1890, The Evening Telegraph reported on the death of
our Centre Half, Arthur Smith, following injuries sustained in a match vs
Kingston Wanderers. In 1892, the Club affiliated to the Surrey FA. The home
ground was never settled with various fields around the outskirts of the
village being used at different times. During the late 1920's they played in the
Kingston and district league winning division 1 in 1928/29 and 1929/30. In
the 1930's they gained intermediate status and quickly achieved senior status
in 1938 upon election to the Surrey senior league.

The war years between 1939 to 1945 saw a vote to agree a temporary merger
with the Avorians Sports Club to form Cobham Avorians to ensure local
football continued. After the War, the Club made home at Cobham recreation
ground until 1955/6 when it moved to Anvil lane also known as the Leg o'
Mutton field. The club took its nickname from the word anvil and thus
became the Hammers.

During the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s the club had a really good local feel with the ground
a vibrant hub of football. The floodlights were installed in1996/7 and were christened
with a game against Conference side Woking. The Hammers were founder members of
the Combined Counties League moving up from the now defunct Surrey Senior League.
They finished second to Ash United in 1998/9. Amongst long serving stalwarts such as Dave
Tippetts who first joined the club in the 1980’s, the pride of place on the clubhouse wall goes
to a painting of Reg Madgwick, who served as player, committee member and fund raiser.

When he died in 1995, he requested his ashes be scattered on the pitch and left all his worldly
possessions to the club and the decision was made to rename the ground The Reg Madgwick
Stadium in his honour. The Club won the Combined Counties Premier League Challenge Cup in
2001/2 beating Bedfont FC 3-2. After the stand went up in 2004, the club was a mainstay in the
Combined Counties under the overall guidance of the late Ken Reed who died in 2018. After a new
committee was elected in 2015, the club has built its Junior football with 16 sides to compliment the
men’s team and the new seated stand, new fencing and the dual turnstile were put in during April 2016
to allow the ground to achieve a Grade D (Step 4) rating.

2017/2018 saw the club promoted for the first time in its history to the Combined Counties Premier Division
under the stewardship of Sam Merison and the introduction of an U23 side to support the first team. Indeed, the
Hammers most recent silverware was in 2018/19 when the Cobham Under 23’s beat SCR FC Under 23’s on Penalties to
win the Development League Cup. The Summer of 2019 saw the Hammers become an FA Charter Standard Club. With
many of the town’s businesses now on board as sponsors and suppliers, the Hammers are on a firm footing for
progression and are delighted to have Committee members who have so many ties between them and their families
who have the club and town at heart.

CLAPTON FOOTBALL CLUB
The history of Clapton is very much that of a club which has a history and reputation unparalleled in
nonleague football. Founded in 1878 as Downs FC in Downs Rd Hackney, the club moved to its
present site in 1888 and changed its name to Clapton Football Club in the same year.

Clapton in 1894 became founder members of the Southern League (Dr Martins) along with Luton
Town, Milwall, Reading, Southampton and Swindon. Arsenal were prime movers but left to join the
football league whilst Tottenham Hotspurs application was rejected!! The club was one of the original
founder members of the Isthmian League in 1905 which was then and up until the early 70s one of the
most important semi-professional leagues in the county.

Clapton’s reputation and history are tied to the early days of this league and the prestigious FA
Amateur Cup and were twice winners of the league and five times winners of the Cup.

In 1956 Clapton played in the first floodlit game for an amateur side against Barking at Upton Park in
front of 5,000 people. Their best ever FA Cup run was during this time with a 1-1 draw against QPR in
1957 before losing the reply away
1-3 in front of 14,000.

With the introduction of the Premier Division, Clapton had a brief change of fortune and won the
Division Two title in 1982-83 as well as the Essex Senior Cup in 1983-84 beating Southend Utd. The
Essex Thameside Trophy was won in 1983-84 and retained the following year. Relegation to the newly
formed Division 2 North followed in 1984-85. Still the club rallied to win the Essex Senior Trophy in
1988 and lost in the final of the London Senior Cup the same year 0-1 to then conference
side Fisher Athletic.

However, a 7th place finish in 1988-1989 saw a mass exodus of players at the end of the season and
two seasons later Clapton were in Division 3 (now Div 2) upon reorganisation of the league. The club
now plays in the Essex Senior League.

Today with Chief Executive Vince McBean at the helm, the club is continuing to develop the
foundations for the future based on a long-term structure. Since 2012, through the continued drive of
management and the development team, the club again starting to make strides again up the league
table. Clapton finished in 7th place in 2015-16 and were winners of the Gordon Braested Memorial
Trophy in the same year. The 2016-17 season saw the Tons maintain a strong position in the
standings of the Essex Senior League, eventually finishing in 2nd place overall.

After a short spell ground sharing with Southend Manor FC in 2019, the Tons have made a new home
at the Terence McMillan Stadium in Plaistow, E13 8SD, for the 2020-21 season.
