                                                   What is Field Day?
• ARRL Field Day is an annual on-the-air event held the 4th weekend of June
(11 AM Saturday to 2 PM Sunday local time)*
• Typically more than 35,000 radio amateurs participate
• The event has one goal: contact as many stations as possible!
• Field Day is held in a contest format. Each voice contact scores one point.
Contacts made using CW or digital modes also get more points since they are
considered more challenging operating modes. Bonus points are offered for
activities such as promoting ham radio in public, providing a “get-on-the-air”
station for non-operators to try it out, using unique means to power the station,
receiving bulletins or forwarding messages, and more
• The overall intent is for hams to practice using as many forms of radio
communication possible to contact others when conditions are not ”ideal” (i.e.
crowded bands) as they would be in an emergency. It is also an excellent
opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of Amateur Radio for emergency
  communications to the public.
*Stations that setup before 11 AM can only operate for 24 hours consecutively

                                                  What’s Happening This Year?
• Not gathering at Pasadena Art College, but JPLARC, PRC, SPARC, and CITARC are all
planning to operate as a combined “club” using the name (not callsign) “W6KA”

• Same temporary rules from 2020 apply again this year:
     1. For Field Day 2021 only, Class D stations may work all other Field Day stations,
including other Class D stations, for points. Class D and Class E stations are limited to
        150 Watts PEP.

     2. In addition, for 2021 only, an aggregate club score will be published, which will be the
sum of all individual entries indicating a specific club (similar to the aggregate score
totals used in ARRL affiliated club competitions).

• In other words, while we cannot operate together in a common location, we can
operate as “one club” in remote locations (as permitted by local rules) or at
home without getting “dinged” for contacting other home stations

• While we will submit individual logs with club name of “W6KA-FD”, it is important
that you use your own callsign and exchange during the event (ex: AC6X, 2B LAX)

                                                    How to Participate
You don’t need an expensive rig and tower to operate on Field Day!

FM simplex freqs for typical handhelds/mobiles:
• 2 meters: Start on 146.520 MHz then try 146.550 or 146.580 MHz
• 220 MHz: Start on 223.500 MHz or 223.520 then move around between
223.40-223.52 MHz in 20 kHz steps
• 440 MHz: Start on 446.000 MHz or move to 446.500 or 446.520 MHz
• 900 MHz: Try 927.975 MHz

Get up high and work some line-of-sight, or work some FM satellite!

QRP operators also get a 5x multiplier for every contact they make!

                                                  Determine Your Operating Class
• Class A (Club/non-club portable) – 3+ persons operating away from permanent station.
Use of commercial power is not allowed. Nice option for family of hams J
• Class B (Portable) – 1-2 persons operating away from permanent station. Use of
  commercial power is not allowed.
• Class B – Battery (Portable) – Same as B except using < 5 Watts RF output power and
cannot use motor-driven generator. 5x multiplier for all contacts!
• Class C (Mobile) – Stations in vehicles capable of operating while in motion and normally
operated in this manner. This includes maritime and aeronautical mobile. Qualifies for
emergency power bonus, but no 5x multiplier since using motor-driven alternator.
• Class D (Home) – Home stations using commercial power
• Class E (Home + emergency power) – Home stations using emergency power
  (ex: solar, gas generator)
• Class F (Emergency Ops Center) – (probably not something you’ll be doing!)

Q: Is it OK to contact W6KA?
A: Yes, please contact W6KA if you hear them!

Q: If two club members contact the same station on the same band, is that
considered a duplicate?
A: No. Each contact is considered unique.

Q: Can club members contact each other? Do those points count?
A: Yes they do! Contact as many club members as you can!

Q: “I will be on vacation during Field Day and going through several sections.
What section do I give in my exchange?”
A: Give the section in which you are currently located. You may work a station
only once per band/mode, regardless if you change sections while mobile.
