Realities prior to harmonization

 No regulations for sorting and recycling packaging waste
 No such systems in place or primitive systems not well
      organized
 No culture to sort waste
 The infrastructure in place was in most of the cases
      inadequate
 Very different organization of the public sector and the
      local authorities
 Waste was mainly government’s or local government’s job

                                www.greendot.com.cy 2

Challenges
 To change the habits and the culture of a “throw it all”
     society
 To quickly reorganize the public sector, the local authorities
and the industry to establish the relevant responsibilities
and eventually develop operational and effective systems
 To develop the local sorting and recycling infrastructure
 To develop proper local energy recovery infrastructure
 To face eventually saturated recycling markets
     internationally
 To make all of the above at a socially acceptable cost

                                www.greendot.com.cy 3

Opportunities

 Existing systems can serve as benchmarks
 Producer Responsibility
 Lots of experience in continental Europe – avoid pitfalls
 Improve the environment and the quality of life in the
    country
 Create local infrastructure and become more independent
    from international markets
 Utilize European funding for pilot projects and some of the
    infrastructure
 Create new jobs locally
 Educate people and create a more environmentally
    conscious society

Collection and Sorting

 Collection and sorting is outsourced. We call for tenders for
the selection of the contractor that will cooperate with us.

 This ensures that we get good quality services as well as good
     prices.

 By outsourcing collection and sorting we managed to help
other companies to expand and invest on new sorting
     technologies, new trucks etc.
