Welcome & Announcements

Hymn – CP 357                                         Text: George Herbert; Music: Basil Harwood;
                                                                                Tune: Luckington
Let All the World in Every Corner Sing
Cantor Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King!
            The heavens are not too high, his praise may thither fly;
            the earth is not too low, his praises there may grow.
            Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King!
             Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King!
             The church with psalms must shout, no door can keep them out;
             but above all, the heart must bear the longest part.
             Let all the world in every corner sing: my God and King!
             Let every land resound from shore to shore: Jesus is Lord!
             Eternity's too short to praise him as we ought;
             a fleeting breath's too long unless expressed in song.
             Let every land resound from shore to shore: Jesus is Lord!

Greeting Please stand, as you are able.

             Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy
             name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

                                                                                            1
Gloria
Cantor Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God,
            heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you
            thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the
            Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have
            mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our
            prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone
            are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the
            Father. Amen.

Collect of the Day
Presider Let us pray. Please remain standing.
            Almighty God, by grace alone you call us and accept us in your service.
            Strengthen us by your Spirit, and make us worthy of your call; through Jesus
            Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
            now and for ever.
People      Amen.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD Please be seated.
The First Reading                                                        Jonah 3: 1-5, 10
Reader The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, “Get up, go to
           Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” So
           Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now
           Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. Jonah
           began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days
           more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” And the people of Nineveh
           believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on
           sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil
           ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would
           bring upon them; and he did not do it.
Reader The word of the Lord.
People     Thanks be to God.

Psalm Please remain seated. Psalm 62: 6-14
One         For God alone my soul in silence waits;
              truly, my hope is in him.
All He alone is my rock and my salvation,
              my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
                                                                                       2
One         In God is my safety and my honour;
               God is my strong rock and my refuge.
All Put your trust in him always, O people,
               pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
One Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath,
               even those of low estate cannot be trusted.
All On the scales they are lighter than a breath,
               all of them together.
One         Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride;
               though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.
All God has spoken once, twice have I heard it,
               that power belongs to God.
One Steadfast love is yours, O Lord,
All for you repay everyone according to his deeds.

The Second Reading                                                  1 Corinthians 7: 29-31
Reader I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now
          on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those
          who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as
          though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no
          possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no
          dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.
Reader The word of the Lord.
People    Thanks be to God.

                                                                Please stand, as you are able.

The Holy Gospel Mark 1: 14-20

People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Gospeller Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good
             news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God
             has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along
             the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into
             the sea – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and
             I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and
             followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and
             his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he
             called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired
             men, and followed him.

People Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

The Nicene Creed Please stand, as you are able.
Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say,
All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and
          earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
          the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God,
          Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one
          being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for
          our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit
          he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our
          sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was
          buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures;
          he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He
          will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom
          will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
          who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is
          worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We
          believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
          baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the
          dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

                                                                                       4
The Prayers of the People
Intercessor Dear friends in Christ, as we celebrate the coming of the Christ who was
            born, manifested and baptized for our salvation, let us pray to God who
            dwells among us, saying:
            God, in your mercy
All         Hear our prayer.
              At the Thanksgiving for the departed:
Intercessor Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord,
People And let light perpetual shine upon them.
Intercessor Loving God, Source of grace and truth, accept these prayers and let the light
              of your love increase in us and in our world. May we come to see the true
              light who shines throughout the world and who is God for all eternity; we
              ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
People        Amen.

Confession and Absolution
Presider Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; God
          welcomes sinners and invites us to this table. Let us confess our sins,
          confident in God’s forgiveness.
          Please kneel, as you are able.
Presider      Most merciful God,
All we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
              by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not
              loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as
              ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your
              Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in
              your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.
Presider Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your
              sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life;
              through Jesus Christ our Lord.
People        Amen.

The Peace Please stand, as you are able.
Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People    And also with you.

                                                                                          5

THE CELEBRATION OF THE EUCHARIST
Offering Hymn - CP 466                                                   Text: Fred Pratt Green;
                                                           Music: Charles Hubert Hastings Parry;
How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord arr. Michael Fleming; Tune: Repton
Cantor How clear is our vocation, Lord, when once we heed your call:
             to live according to your word, and daily learn, refreshed, restored,
             that you are Lord of all, and will not let us fall.
             But if, forgetful, we should find your yoke is hard to bear;
             if worldly pressures fray the mind and love itself cannot unwind
             its tangled skein of care: our inward life repair.
             We mark your saints, how they became in hindrances more sure,
             whose joyful virtues put to shame the casual way we wear your name,
             and by our faults obscure your power to cleanse and cure.
             In what you give us, Lord, to do, together or alone,
             in old routines or ventures new, may we not cease to look to you,
             the cross you hung upon, all you endeavoured done.

Prayer over the Gifts
Presider Loving God, before the world began you called us. Make holy all we offer
           you this day, and strengthen us in that calling. We ask this in the name of
           Jesus Christ the Lord.
People     Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving
Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you.
Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord.

                                                                                          6
Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Presider We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son,
           Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through
           whom you have created all things.
           By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared
           our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the
           God and Father of all. In fulfilment of your will he stretched out his hands
           in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he
           won for you a holy people.
           He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross,
           that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of
           sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your
           presence. Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of
           your name.
Sanctus & Benedictus
All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full
           of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the
           name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
           Please assume a posture of prayer that is appropriate – stand, sit or kneel.
Presider Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour
           Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death,
           took bread and gave you thanks, saying, “Take, and eat: this is my body
           which is broken for you.” In the same way he took the cup, saying, “This is
           my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of
           me.”
           Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread
           and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your
           presence and serve you.
           We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church.
           Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the
           Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may
           praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ.
           All glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the
           holy Church, now and for ever.
People     Amen.
                                                                                    7
The Lord’s Prayer
Presider As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your
           will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive
           us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time
           of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the
           glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Presider Those wishing to do so may make their spiritual communion by joining in
            this prayer with me now:
All I worship and adore you, Lord Jesus Christ, present in the Holy Sacrament
            and in your people, who are gathered in spirit. In this moment I join with
            them to receive you in my heart, and in our community. May you,
            enthroned on the altar, be now enthroned in my heart; may you, present
            in bread and wine, feed and renew my soul; may you, who give yourself
            to us again, fill us with grace, and heavenly blessing. Even as I am fed,
            may my hunger for you and for your reign of justice and peace increase,
            that I may, with your Spirit, work for that day when your reign shall come
            on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

People whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or
         imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and
         in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn - CP 434                          Text: Herbert O’Driscoll; Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley;
                                                                                  Tune: Aurelia
The Love of Jesus Calls Us
Cantor    The love of Jesus calls us our joyous praise to sing;
          our deeply felt thanksgivings we now together bring,
          for all God’s many blessings, unasked yet still received,
          and for the generations who faithfully believed.
             The love of Jesus calls us, that we may always be
             companions on a journey, where all the world may see
             that serving Christ is freedom which time does not destroy;
             where Christ’s command is duty, and every duty joy.
             The love of Jesus calls us to go where he would go,
             to challenge all that limits, to change, to learn, to grow,
             to know that Christ has freed us, that prisons are no more;
             for those who seek his kingdom, Christ opens every door.
             The love of Jesus calls us in swiftly changing days,
             to be God’s co-creators in new and wondrous ways;
             that God with men and women may so transform the earth,
             that love and peace and justice may give God’s kingdom birth.

Dismissal
Leader Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
People    Thanks be to God.

Lockdown can be a lonely experience for many members of the Cathedral. Not
        only does it take away the opportunity for in-person worship, it adds the burdens
        of isolation and disconnectedness to so many who live alone. If you know anyone
          who would benefit from a call from our pastoral care team, please be in touch
              with Canon Beth Benson at bbenson@stjamescathedral.ca. Thank you.

A note to families: St. James Cathedral subscribes to the Sunday Paper, a wonderful weekly Children's
Bulletin. It includes notes on the readings for each Sunday, and lots of fun drawings. The bulletins are
available on our website, and you are welcome to print them off for the children in your household as
a way of engaging them in worship.

SERMON DISCUSSION GROUP
All are invited to join in a one-hour discussion of Sunday’s sermon and its related themes every
Monday at 10:00am via Zoom. If you would like to be added to the invitation list, please email Lisa
at lscapillato@stjamescathedral.ca. A weekly invitation is sent to all who register.

VIRTUAL HYMN SING
Do you miss singing together at church? Please join us for our next Virtual Hymn Sing. The next
session takes place on January 27 at 4:00pm. We will use Zoom and sing from home. To receive a
link, please email irenecourage105@gmail.com.

A REQUEST FOR VOLUNTEER CAMERA AND SOUND OPERATORS
Training provided
We are grateful to the Toronto Diocese for purchasing and installing permanent cameras in the
Cathedral's Nave. Going forward, the cameras will be used for live-streaming our 11:00am and special
services. This is a wonderful opportunity for members of our parish to volunteer and train as camera
and sound operators on a rotating basis for live-streaming our services. If you are interested in taking
on this role, please contact Jim Kotsifas at jkotsifas@stjamescathedral.ca.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY AT ST. JAMES
While children’s programming on Sundays is suspended for the time being, we still want to support
families in the spiritual development of their little ones. If you have children or youth in your life and
would like support with resources for prayer and learning at home, email Claire at
clatimerdennis@stjamescathedral.ca.
