Year 7 French and Spanish ELA – Module 1
LO: to develop the skills required to support your language learning

Success criteria:

   1.   To classify vocabulary in order to support vocabulary learning
   2.   To create resources to support vocab learning
   3.   To find out the meaning of unknown words using an on-line dictionary
   4.   To develop your decoding skills in reading exercises
   5.   To challenge yourself to listen to a Spanish song and work out some of the lyrics.

Support:

Year 7 vocabulary lists are available on Google Classroom. You can also pop in to see any of the language
teachers any break, lunch or after school to get help. Don’t leave it until the day before to get help though!

There are 10 tasks in the ELA. Each one should take about 30 minutes so plan to do 2 every evening.

Help:

If you don’t have a French dictionary at home, www.wordreference.com is a great online dictionary. You
can also download the app for this. Google translate is not a dictionary and isn’t very accurate so don’t
use it.

Task 1 – strategies to learn vocab -20 marks
Step 1

Sort these words into the different categories below. Each word to go in only one column – either a verb
OR a noun OR an adjective.

Step 2

Underneath the word add what it means. Use a French dictionary in the library or use an on-line
dictionary. Try downloading wordreference.com as an app on your phones. Check you have put the word
in the right column (noun/ verb/ adjective) by looking at the information found in the dictionary.

Task 2 – create a mind map 3marks
Using all the vocabulary from task 1 create a mind map. You will need a blank sheet of A4 for this. Your
teacher will show you an example.

Task 3 – Strategies to learn vocab 15 marks
Using a dictionary complete the table below. Use a Spanish dictionary in the library or use an on-line
dictionary. Common symbols used to help you complete the final column:

Task 4 – Create a game 2 marks
Using all the vocabulary from task 3 create a game you can play to help you learn vocab. You will need to
show your teacher.

Some example APPS are: Tiny cards by Duolingo, Memrise, Quizlet, Linguascope activity builder (user
name: chasemfl/ password XXXXXX)
Task 5 – Cultural research 10 marks
Use the internet to find out the answer to the following questions:

   1. Who is the president of France and when did he take up his role?
