7 Daily ROAR | Community Futures Conference - Fall 2014PR 101 – The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn…
Without Blowing It
It’s your time to shine. In fact, it’s always your time to shine, because you and your col-
leagues do work every day that positively impacts your community. Now, get out there and
talk about it! That was the message from the team at Laura Ballance Media Group (LBMG)
who presented to a packed audience of Community Futures team members last night at
our annual Welcome Reception and 2014 Marketing Strategy Launch.
Laura Ballance, President, and Rebecca Peters, Vice-President of Communications and
Corporate Relations at LBMG gave the group an insider’s perspective on how to understand
the local media in each of their individual communities, delving into the tools and tactics
needed to establish strong working relationships.
“I always say ‘what people say about you is so much more valuable than what you say
about yourself,’” said Ballance. “Which is why earned media is such a great tool.” Ballance
went on to explain how to recognize client stories that are worthy of media attention, and
then how to deliver them in such a way that media will want share that story with everyone
else in the community. And by everyone else, we of course mean potential new clients.
Laura, Rebecca and their staff at the LBMG offices work every day with media of all forms,
all across the province. This week, they’ll be using their skills and expertise to draw attention
to the great work and wide variety of resources available at each one of our Community
Futures offices across the province, in relation to upcoming Small Business Week. We look for-
ward to sharing the results of this awareness campaign with you in future communications.
