About us - Karos Adventure

• Karos Adventure – a new name but familiar faces!
• We are a new company formed at the end of August 2016.
• Owned & managed by Steve Wilkins, former DofE Manager at BPE.
• DofE Gold Award holder, Outdoors Leader, Assessor.
  30 years experience in delivering DofE Expeditions including
  10 years as DofE Manager for other AAP companies.

Bronze Expedition
• Training & Planning (2 days):              17th & 18th June 2017
• Practice Expedition (2 days, 1 night):     8th – 9th July 2017
• Qualifying Expedition (2 days, 1 night):   9th – 10th September 2017

Expeditions

•   Practice Expedition (Bronze: 2 days, 1 night / Silver: 2 days, 2 nights)
•   Qualifying Expedition (Bronze: 2 days, 1 night / Silver: 3 days, 2 nights)
•   Walking routes that the teams planned during their Training
•   Supervised by qualified Expedition Leaders throughout all expeditions
•   Includes assessment by Accredited Assessor on Qualifying Expedition
•   Personalised Assessor Reports issued for uploading onto eDofE

20 Conditions

•   Own physical effort (without outside assistance / motorised travel).
•   Unaccompanied and self-sufficient (no shops).
•   Between 4 – 7 in each team.
•   Complete set number of hours of Planned Activity per day.
•   Cook and eat a substantial meal.
•   Have an Aim and deliver a Presentation.

Kit

We will provide…   You will need …
• Tents            • Walking Boots
• Stoves           • Personal Expedition Clothing & Items
• OS Maps          • Rucksack
• Map Cases        • Sleeping Bag
                   • Group Expedition Items (T-Towel etc)
                   • Food & Fuel
Food

•   Breakfast – porridge, cereal bars, scotch pancakes, honey.
•   Evening Meal – soup, pasta & sauce, rice & curry, cake & custard.
•   Lunches – flatbreads or oatcakes, preserves, flapjacks, biscuits.
•   Snacks – raisins, sultanas, energy sweets, jelly, Haribos,
•   Water – at least 1 litre carrying plus 1 -2 litres refilled during the day.
•   Emergency Rations – Kendal Mint Cake or Dextrose Tablets.

Avoid: Meat, Dairy, Tins, Bottles/Jars.
Health & Safety

•   Licensed – Approved Activity Provider and AALA License.
•   Expedition Leaders – qualified, friendly, supportive, enhanced DBS.
•   Risk Assessments – comprehensive generic & area specific.
•   Public Liability Insurance of £5million.
•   Regular review and maintenance of equipment.
•   Emergency Contact details on expedition & residential events.
Communications

•   Mobile Phones – switched off and sealed in a bag. Use in emergency.
•   Joining Instructions – start & finish locations, times, leaders.
•   Home Contact – available on expeditions and residential events.
•   Information – kit lists, menu ideas etc.
•   Online – web, Facebook, Twitter.

The other sections (Bronze)

In the meantime, ensure you start work also on the other sections…
• Volunteering – 3 months
• Skills – 3 months              + a further 3 months in any section.
• Physical – 3 months
… and upload your evidence onto eDofE!!!

In the meantime, ensure you start work also on the other sections…
• Volunteering – 6 months
• Skills – 3 or 6 months (switch with Physical)
• Physical – 3 or 6 months (switch with Skills)
… and upload your evidence onto eDofE!!!
On your Expedition…

•   There will be highs and lows.
•   There will be times when it’s tough - stick with it!!!
•   Support each other through the challenges.
•   Share with each other your successes.
•   Be honest with your team and with your Supervisor.
•   Be ready for the challenge – training, planning and preparation.
