2018 Volume 6
What is Synod?
Synod is a constitutional assembly of a province of the Moravian Church. The Quadrennial (every four years) Synod
of the Moravian Church Northern Province will be held June 21-25 in Bethlehem, PA on the campus of Moravian
College and Seminary. Great Kills will send Pastor Tracy and one delegate Deborah Nasta (alternate), elected by our
Church Council, to this Synod. The 2018 Northern Province Synod theme is “Gather … Grow … Go!”
Why have a Synod?
The Northern Province Book of Order assigns Synod the responsibility to hold elections for: the governing board
(called the Provincial Elders Conference or PEC), provincial and interprovincial board and agencies, bishops, and
delegates to the Unity Synod of the Moravian Church. Our Provincial Book of Order states that Synod also has the
responsibility for receiving reports and “exercising general supervision for church activity within the prov-
ince”(BO.104).
In order for Synod to fulfill its purpose the delegates prepare for the work of Synod by reviewing reports and praying
for God’s leading in the work of Synod. While attending Synod, delegates will participate in and prayerfully consider
the work of Synod committees, worship together, seek God’s guidance, and offer discernment as it pertains to God’s
vision and direction for the missions and ministries of the Northern Province (it’s congregations, boards, and agen-
cies).
Who are the Synod delegates?
Delegates to the Northern Province Synod typically come from congregations, boards, and agencies in the District of
Columbia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minneso-
ta, North Dakota, Arizona, California, and the Canadian Provinces of Alberta and Ontario.
All ordained ministers serving under call, appointment, or in specialized ministries are delegates to Synod by virtue of
their office. All bishops residing in the Northern Province. All lay members of the Provincial Elders Conference and
District Executive Boards. The President of Moravian College, a representative of Moravian Academy and Linden
Hall School for Girls, a representative of the Provincial Women’s Board, the Provincial Comptroller and Chancellor
(provided they are members of the Moravian Church). Every congregation currently has one delegate for every 250
confirmed communicant members. Retired ministers elect 10% of their membership to represent them as official dele-
gates. Each representative district will also select two youth delegates from within their district.
How can I participate?
Pray for the safety and well being of all Synod delegates as they travel and participate in Synod.
Join us for a commissioning liturgy on Sunday, June 17th during our 11:00am Worship.
Follow Northern Province Synod on Moravian.org and on our church Facebook page: Great Kills Moravian
Church
Be present on July 1st our delegates will share their reflections on Synod in Worship. Worship moves to 10:00am
on this day. The Sturgeon Bay Moravian Youth Mission Team will also bring greetings.
In Christ,
Pastor Tracy
