The High Performance All Electric Home

Ultra high efficiency electric technologies plus renewable energy combine to
create the high performance home of the future today.
As the electric grid continues to get cleaner and electric appliances get ever more efficient, the
all electric home provides the lowest cost solution to dramatically reduce carbon emissions in
new construction. New legislation in California, Oregon and Washington will require levels of
energy efficiency and carbon reduction that can only be attained economically by electrification.
For builders and designers, this is an opportunity to get ahead of the curve by embracing the
technologies that will become the new standard over the next decade and which provide
immediate benefits to home buyers today. For homeowners, all electric homes provide the
premium living experience with multiple advantages over fossil fuel powered homes.

The advantages of the All Electric Home

        Higher Performance
Modern electric appliances outperform their gas powered and older electric counterparts
and deliver a better living experience. They provide more control and precision. They are
cleaner and quieter and can be connected to the grid for controlling remotely. They
opereate effectively in even the coldest climates without the need for gas backup.

        Lower Cost
In new construction, all electric solutions means less costly infrastructure. Cost savings
from avoiding gas piping, service installation and monthly service fees will offset the
slightly higher costs of the electric appliances. Heat Pump furnaces and water heaters
are 3-5 times more efficient than gas or electric devices, saving homeowners hundreds of
dollars per year in utility bills.

        Higher Sustainability
Space heating, cooling and water heating are a home’s largest sources of carbon
emissions. All Electric Homes do not burn fossil fuels on site for energy, reducing the
emissions from heating and cooling by over 70%. When electric appliances are powered
by renewable energy, their emissions will go to zero.

        Superior Air Quality
By eliminating on site fuel combustion for heating and cooking, an all electric home will
avoid the dangerous by-products of gas combustion such as CO and NO2 which are
linked to serious health risks. The more continuous air movement from heat pump furnaces
also enables more air filtration for cleaner indoor air.

Essential Electric Technologies
Heat pump water heaters and furnaces, induction stoves and electric fireplace
inserts are the technologies that enable a high performance all electric home.

Heat Pump Water Heater – Lowest cost and lowest carbon hot water
Heat pump technology captures ambient heat from the surrounding space and transfers the
heat to the water in the tank. This takes much less energy than electric resistance heating or gas
combustion and results in more hot water for the money. Because it is 3-5 times more efficient
than electric resistance or gas fired solutions, a heat pump water heater will produce 75% fewer
carbon emissions.

Heat Pump Furnace/AC – Low cost and lowest carbon indoor comfort
An external compressor and evaporator unit absorbs heat from the outside air and conducts that
to indoor air handlers which push warm air through the home. The same heat pump can be run in
reverse to cool indoor spaces. These systems are ideal for moderate climates like those in the
Pacific Northwest, but are also effective in even the coldest areas of the U.S. They operate with
more continuous air flow which provides opportunity for more air filtration. Ductless heat pump
systems produce the most heating for the money and the lowest carbon emissions.

Induction Cooking – More control and superior indoor air quality
Induction ranges and cooktops employ magnetic coils with digital controls beneath an easy to
clean glass surface. The coils heat the cookwear, but the glass surface itself does not get hot.
This creates a safer cooktop with faster heat times, more precise temperature control and more
immediate temperature changes for a better cooking experience. Because there is no fuel
combustion, induction stoves produce no CO and NO2 emissions which are unavoidable with gas
powered ranges. These pollutants are linked to higher risk of asthma, especially in children, and
studies find that peak indoor air pollution from gas burning stoves can reach levels that would be
illegal outdoors.

Electric Fireplace Inserts – Temperature control and versatility
A wall mounted unit contains an electric space heater, a realistic flame generator and decorative
media such as stones, glass blocks or logs. A remote control can be used to turn on the device,
adjust the temperature and control flame options such as color and height. The units require no
external venting and run off 110V supply. They come in a variety of sizes and configurations, can
be placed in any room and offer a variety of aesthetic options. They require no cleaning and are
safer because their external surfaces do not get hot. They can be used in flame only mode
without heating to create the visual fire effect any time of year.

All the major manufacturers of home appliances are committed to modern electric solutions and
back these products up with warranties that are at least as strong as gas powered models.
