SECURED BY DESIGN SECURITY AS STANDARD SECURED BY DESIGN Secured by Design (SBD) is the UK police flagship initiative supporting the principles of designing out crime. Crime Reduction and Responsibility Secured by Design is a crime prevention initiative operated by the Police Services of the United Kingdom, which aims to utilise design principles and products in the build environment that reduce the risk of crime by combining minimum standards of physical security and proven principles of natural surveillance and defensible space. Independent research has shown that these principles can lead to a reduction in crime of up to 75%.

After several years of discussion and lobbying it has been agreed to introduce a Building Regulation requiring a minimum level of security for doors and windows.
Security is now included in Building Regulations in England and Scotland, and in Wales from the 1st November 2018. Approved Document Q 2015 – Security: Dwellings In order to meet building regulations in England and Scotland only, you can order from our XD / XNG range of doors. This regulation covers any new dwellings built in England and they will be expected to comply for new planning applications from 1st October 2015 and for any sites where building work is started after the 1st October 2016 (in line with the usual transition arrangements).
The regulation will also apply to changes in use of buildings.

Proven in use since 1979, in locations ranging from prestigious city centres to rural hillsides exposed to the worst of the weather, Steel doors are truly outstanding. Local authorities, housing associations, national major house builders and regional developers have all chosen to combine the visual appeal of traditional panelled doors with the energy saving, easy care characteristics that make Steel doors such high performers. They meet the exacting standards of newly built homes and provide an aesthetically pleasing means of improving the thermal performance of entry systems in older properties.
Steel doors offer a long lasting, low maintenance solution to cracking, problems inherent in some solid timber doors. To ensure maximum effectiveness with minimum site labour, Steel doors can be supplied as complete doorsets comprising doors pre-hung in frames fitted with weather sealing components.
Steel Door Specifications DOOR CONSTRUCTION The Steel door is robustly constructed from galvanised steel surfaces permanently bonded to a perimeter sub-frame of timber or synthetic stiles and rails, and filled with an insulating polyurethane core. The rigid polyurethane foam core is CFC and HCFC free, has an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of zero and a global warming potential (GWP) of less than five. The steel slab have smooth external and internal faces. THERMAL PERFORMANCE Steel doors have a U value through the door of 0.6W/m2 K, equivalent to approximately four solid timber doors. U values of doorsets for use in building regulation calculations are available from our Technical Department.
PRE-FINISHED DOORS Steel doors are supplied as standard in a primer finish ready for on-site painting. A factory applied paint finish in a choice of five standard colours is an optional extra. Doors can be painted to any standard RAL or BS colour, for a truly bespoke finish.
DECORATIVE GLAZING OPTIONS Steel doors are available with a range of glass options to suit every taste in traditional and modern designs with a wide range of glass effects. Please see pages 38-47 to choose a design. IRONMONGERY Using our modern CNC cutting machines we can prepare for a wide range of Ironmongery to suit the function and style required by our customers. This includes the traditional mortice locks, night latches and multipoint locks. Please see pages 47-51 for the full range of Ironmongery supplied. SECURED BY DESIGN AVAILABLE See Page 9 for more details High performance, low maintenance... IG Doors’ range of GRP composite doors combines stunning looks with high performance and low maintenance. Where a particular project requires a top-of-the-range door product, the GRP door fits the bill. Custom built to developers’ requirements for both new build and refurbishment projects, high performance GRP doors will outperform their more traditional solid timber and PVCu counterparts. The durable construction of the glass reinforced polymer slab makes it tough enough to resist impact and to minimise the effect of scratches, whilst remaining completely resistant to all that the weather can throw at it.
With a GRP door you can be assured that the realistic timber good looks will stand the test of time.
GRP doors are supplied as complete systems consisting of doors pre-hung in frames fitted with weathersealing components to ensure maximum effectiveness with minimum site labour. GRP Door Specifications DOOR CONSTRUCTION GRP doors are constructed using two GRP woodgrain skins permanently bonded to a perimeter sub-frame of synthetic material and filled with an insulating polyurethane core. The rigid polyurethane foam core is CFC and HCFC free, has an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of zero and a global warming potential (GWP) of less than five. GRP doors can be cut in width and cut-down in height, allowing the doors to be sized to fit existing openings for refurbishment projects.
The slab construction provides a fully sealed product impervious to moisture. THERMAL PERFORMANCE GRP doors have a U value through the door of 0.6W/m2 K, equivalent to approximately four solid timber doors. U values of doorsets for use in building regulation calculations are available from our Technical Department. Winkhaus AV2 Heritage Door Lock AUTOMATIC Multi-Point Locking System Our architectural heritage in the UK and Ireland is an important element of many of our finest cities and their respective period buildings. With many 18th and 19th Century buildings being listed and in conservation areas it is paramount that any front door replacements are a sympathetic reproduction of a period classic. Modern Multi-Point Locking systems which provide higher levels of security and weather performance have traditionally not leant themselves to the typical round pull door furniture and separate eye-level escutcheon which can be so common on Georgian and Edwardian doors.
Winkhaus have addressed this problem with the AV2 Heritage Locking System where the euro profile locking cylinder is at a similar height to a traditional round cylinder pull and the lock is operated automatically as soon as the door is closed. This means that an external lever handle is not required to operate the locking points and the lock can be deadlocked or opened externally by turning the key a quarter of a turn. From the inside the door can be opened by an internal thumb turn, again with a quarter turn. The door is automatically locked when closed from the inside and the key is then required to gain entry from the outside.
The AV2 Heritage Locking system is an ideal solution for not only replacement period doors but for prestige new build doors also. Typically cities such as London, Bristol, York, Edinburgh, Bath, Chester, Dublin, Oxford, Cambridge and Liverpool amongst many others would benefit from this modern adaptation of a traditional locking style. BUILDING IN PRE-HUNG UNITS
Securely fix pre-hung unit square and plumb into brick/ blockwork coursings. 4 fixing points per jamb are recommended using suitable frame anchors.
This may depend on the house construction
Allow brick/blockwork to set around the frame before removing the bracings
The door may be removed by carefully tapping out the hinge pins. Keep these with the door
Doors should be coded to ensure proper matching on refitting
Fit lock where necessary into pre-cut position and secure. Fix levers in position. Fix lock keep/s into position where necessary
If required, ‘ease’ the door before painting FIXING PRE-HUNG UNITS INTO EXISTING OPENINGS
Check that rough opening is square and plumb
Apply mastic to the floor slab and to the underside of the timber / plastic sill
Centre the unit in the rough opening and hold in place by placing shims between the wall and the jambs, making sure the unit is square and plumb
Remove the bracings to allow the door to operate
Fix the hinge jamb to the wall with fixings (Fischer Fix frame bolts or similar are recommended, depending on construction)
Secure top and bottom fixing first.
Re-check that the frame is plumb and square and adjust the shims between the lock jamb and the wall if necessary. Starting at the bottom, fix the lock jamb to the wall through the rebat
After fixing at the bottom, check that the frame has not twisted by trying the door for contact with the compression weatherstrip
Adjust jamb position if required. Fix at remaining positions. Fit lock into pre-cut position and secure, fix levers into position, fix keeps into position NOTE! Packing MUST be used between frame and wall around the fixing positions. This will avoid the frame becoming distorted.
Packing MUST also be placed behind the locking keeps between the frame and wall. Frame fixings should be made above and below the keeps. After fixing is completed the door should be closed against the weatherseal ensuring it makes FULL CONTACT, the keeps on MPL locks can be moved for full adjustment. INSTALLING PVCu FRAMES
Door and frame must be fitted as a complete unit
The sill MUST be bedded on mastic FULLY SUPPORTED and LEVEL
The hinge jamb should be fixed first. Using a large spirit level ensure that all jambs are square and plumb. The door should then be closed against the lock jamb ensuring that the door makes FULL CONTACT against the weatherseal.
The jamb should then be fixed into position THRESHOLD
The threshold strip must be fixed securely using at least 3 fixings. A continuous silicone seal should be applied to the underside of the threshold before fixing and also to the ends of the threshold where it meets the frame to ensure weather tightness
It is important that the door is fitted correctly (square and plumb) and the threshold seals form a good seal across the width of the door
In exposed locations it may be necessary to apply additional sealing around/ underneath hardware items and fixings such as handles and cylinders APPLYING PAINT FINISH TO STEEL / GRP DOORS PRIMED DOORS AND FRAMES SHOULD BE PAINTED WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF DELIVERY
Wipe the door with a pre-paint wipe or similar to remove any possible contaminants from the door
The sheen of the primer coating must be removed by lightly rubbing with fine abrasive paper or scotch pad
Clean off all dust and dirt with water and allow to dry, ensuring the surface is clean before painting
Apply paint (undercoat and gloss) to door
The glazing frame must also be painted following the paint manufacturer’s instructions
Do not paint the frame weatherstrip
Make sure the door is completely dry before closing to avoid marking the face of the door with the weatherstrip CLEANING THE DOOR AND IRONMONGERY
Metal polishes, abrasive cleaners, chemicals or cleaning solvents SHOULD NOT be used to clean Ironmongery on the door.
(This could deteriorate the item and invalidate the warranty)
To prolong the life of the furniture and the paint finish of the door, regular dusting with a soft cloth or camel hair brush, supplemented by regular washing with warm soapy water, is recommended, especially in industrial areas or coastal locations
Lubricate door mechanisms with light oil about once a year. Avoid scratches from rings and keys PRE-FINISHED STAINED DOORS
IG Doors guarantee the paint finish for 3 years, after this period stain/ paint may need to be re-applied on a regular maintenance cycle by customers. Instruction procedures are available on request.
REPAIRING DENTS OR SCRATCHES Accidental dents or scratches may be easily repaired as follows: 1.Sand the damaged area making sure all the base primer is removed 2.Apply a fibreglass plastic filler (similar to that used for car body repair) and follow the manufacturer’s instructions 3.Rub down repaired area and re-paint with undercoat and gloss GENERAL Sills MUST be bedded on either mortar or mastic and FULLY SUPPORTED We recommend doorsets and components are stored in a dry, covered area.
