Forest Lake Branch update by Julie Baldwin

Our community have once again shown their support for victims of
the bushfires. Special thanks to all who have volunteered their support.
It’s been a very tough few months and we’ve been told recovery from this
disaster will take a very long time.
We are keen to start off the year with our first meeting on Thursday 13
February. Bring a friend and come along. Put a reminder on your calendar.
Meeting Place - The Lion Soccer Club, 133 Pine Road, Richlands, 10am
sign in, 10.30am start. Entry includes morning tea. Our Chief Advocate,
Ian Henschke, well known through the media, is coming along for a chat
to members and, time permitting, a fun activity is planned to get off to a
good start. Join us for lunch at The Lion afterwards. Meetings are held on
the second Thursday of the month except January and December.
National Seniors Forest Lake is one dynamic branch of an Australian
wide organisation which represents the views and needs of older
Australians. We are a non-profit, non-political organisation that gives voice to issues that affect older Australians. National
Seniors provides unrivalled access to policy-makers, a raft of commercial benefits, world-class research and top-notch
publications for everything the over 50s need to navigate the second half of their lives. For less than the cost of a cup of
coffee per month, you can join this Australia wide organisation. Ask our Membership Officer for an Application Form.
The first bus trip for 2020 is to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on 19 March. Entry and morning tea are included on
this trip. Lunch can be purchased at any of the various outlets within the Sanctuary. Payment for this trip is to be made
at the February Branch meeting.
A variety of exciting away trips, day trips, special themed events, BBQ’s, lunches, movie mornings and lots more are on
the calendar for 2020 and you will be happy to know our trips and activities suit both singles and couples. The February to
July calendar edition will be available at Branch meetings.
To our members who are unwell or recovering from surgery, our best wishes for a return to good health. Let’s hope there
is not so much sickness this year. Check out our Branch website www.forestlakenationalseniors.org.au/ and our Facebook

don’t like that feeling. It’s that feeling you have when you are

you still need to do what you are doing! It’s a great recipe for CIVIC CENTRE

For me, and I suspect, some of you, it also needs to involve
less time on social media and the internet in general. Chatting

Learn conversational English in Forest Lake

Conversing in English is something people born in Australia take for granted. However many people born overseas
have significant difficulty in hearing and speaking English.
Forest Lake Baptist Church hold English Conversation Groups to help people for whom English is a second or third
language converse more freely in everyday English.
Groups are held each Friday at the Salvation Army auditorium, between 10am and 11am, followed by an informal
morning tea. Participant from a range of different countries of origin have the opportunity to converse socially over a
‘cuppa’ in English, practicing the skills they are developing.
“People have attended from many different countries and backgrounds,” said group coordinator, Mary Linning.
“Some have had little formal education, while others have University degrees or are preparing for advanced studies.”
There are two groups operating where people are matched to the English fluency of the other people in the group.
Topics cover a range of life and social skills – when and how to call ‘000’; how to cast a vote or a postal vote; keeping
safe at the beach; fire safety in the home and many more. Each session includes a short Bible topic, usually related to
the lesson of the day.
Group leaders are members of Forest Lake Baptist Church, and have a range of formal training and life experiences
that enable them to gear the materials to the educational and language levels of the participants.
“There is always a lot of care and laughter as people share their background stories and adaptations to life in Australia.
We love to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions together and support and encourage each other,” said Mary.
The program runs during school terms, with a multicultural lunch at the end of each term. For further information
visit the church website, www.flbc.org.au, or call Mary on 0403 969 205.

Forest Lake crochet group gets busy again
The Forest Lake Crochet group are heading into the new year raring to go after the phenomenal success of their
Christmas stall at the end of last year.
The stall full of hand made items, each priced under $10, at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre, raised $1600 from
which the group donated a portion to the Drought and Bushfire Appeal and the remainder to Project Linus. Project
Linus uses funds donated to make blankets for sick children or children in the foster system.
Members of the group also donated their time gift wrapping at the shopping centre in the weeks leading up to
Christmas, raising over $1900 for Forest Lake Uniting Church to use to support the community.
The 40 members have already been hard at work this year making possum pouches, joey pouches and birds nests
to be used for animals in need locally in Queensland and further afield.
Relying on a combination of wool bought with their own funds and wool donated by the community, group coordinator,
Sue Gibbens is often overwhelmed by the generosity of the local community.
“The problem is, our ladies work so fast and make so much that we are often short on wool! Any donations are
hugely appreciated and can simply be dropped into our donation box outside Woolies at the shopping centre,” said Sue.
Anyone interested in joining the friendly members of the Forest Lake Crochet Group is welcome to come along on
a Thursday from 9am - noon at the Forest Lake Uniting Church hall located on Waterford Road, Ellengrove. For any
inquiries, Sue can be contacted by calling 3279 9561.

  Forest Lake Probus Club Update
                     by 3XEOLFLW\2IÀFHU3DP0R\
Forest Lake Probus Club would like to extend to its membership and the wider community best wishes for the New
Year. The first meeting of the new year was on 14 January, with 30 members in attendance. There were three invited
guests, including Cr Charles Strunk, who gave a special presentation on ongoing local government projects in the
Forest Lake area. He also presented certificates acknowledging 10 years and 15 years continuous service to the Club
to Lin Marshall and Vette Poole, respectively. The meeting finished with lunch and a great Australia Day Trivia Quiz,
which was a lot of fun.
There are many wonderful opportunities for fun and fellowship in the weeks ahead.
On Thursday 6 February, there will be a luncheon at Monier Hotel in Sinnamon Park from 11.30am.
A picnic in the park will take place on Thursday, 14 February at Forest Lake from 10am. The cost is $5 a head, and
patrons are advised to provide their own seating.
February’s Club meeting is on Tuesday 11 February at the Lion Richlands from 10.30am. Prospective members are
welcome to this, as well as any other event, and should contact either our Membership Officer, Ellen, on 3879 7784, or
our Club Secretary, Barbara, on 0422 817 924.
Once again, enjoy the new year. We look forward to seeing members, old and new, in the coming year ahead.

as our brave emergency service personnel have battled unprecedented bushfires. Many people and animals have lost
their lives with 2,000 homes also being destroyed across six million hectares that have been burnt.
I’m pleased to see our State Government led by Annastacia Palaszczuk providing leadership for Queenslanders
and supporting our emergency personnel. FES volunteer firefighters and SES workers are now eligible for compensation
under the Federal Government’s Volunteer Firefighters Compensation Package which will be administered by the
Queensland Government. And on a Federal level, I and my colleagues stand ready to support the necessary measures
to provide the critical support needed to everyone who has been impacted by these fires. This includes supporting the
passage of any legislation that was required for reconstruction, recovery, for payments that might be needed for individual
Australians, or payments to communities through local government or other community organisations.
It is also important that we take the required steps needed to be better prepared for future fire seasons. On behalf
of our community, I send my deepest condolences to those who may have lost loved ones due to the fires and I send my
sincerest thanks to all of our emergency personnel who have put their lives on the line to keep us safe. Our community
and Australia owes you a great debt. If there is anything I can ever assist with, please send me an email Milton.Dick.

RSL Sub-Branch Update by Alan Greig
                                                                                   g

A few weeks ago I was asked if there is a difference between RSL Queensland and its Sub-branches and an RSL
Club. Have you ever wondered if there is a difference? RSL Queensland has approximately 230 RSL Sub-branches but
only about 40 have a relationship with an RSL Club. Of these only 17 (or about 7.5%) own and operate their associated
RSL Club. There is a common misconception about RSL Clubs and RSL Sub.-branches.
If you have visited a Queensland RSL Club thinking that the money you spend there will help veterans, you might
be surprised to learn that may not necessarily be the case. Research shows that 54% of Queenslanders believe they
are supporting RSL Queensland’s charitable activities by patronising an RSL Club. People believe that the cash spent
at the bars and poker machines goes towards veterans but that’s simply not correct. What RSL Queensland does is
provide welfare and wellbeing assistance to current and former service people and their families throughout Queensland
– both State wide and on a local level through the Sub-branches. RSL Queensland does not operate any alcohol or
gaming facilities. RSL Sub-branches are run by volunteers all of whom are ex-servicemen and women themselves who
give their time and provide crucial welfare support. Most funding for RSL Sub-branches rely on public donations to
support veterans in their local communities. Very little funding for these activities comes from RSL Clubs which are
commercial identities.
Although we share the origins, RSL Clubs have been separated since the introduction of poker machines necessitated
more strict liquor and gaming legislation in the 1990s. The relationship between Sub-branches and their local club varies
greatly, making for a complex picture. In some cases, the club leases a property from the Sub-branch to operate its gaming
venue and the Sub-branch may exist in the same building where it conducts its welfare and commemorative activities.
In other cases, clubs may help the Sub-branches with the organisation and costs associated with commemorative
activities such as ANZAC Day. But sometimes collaborative relationships do not exist and the club may not direct its
charitable expenditure to the Sub-branch for its welfare activities. Thus patronising an RSL Club doesn’t necessarily
support veterans. Lack of this understanding damages the RSL Queensland brand and undermines the work of Sub-
branches to help veterans. I trust this assists readers to understand the difference.

I love to see the determination and joy in the faces of the young people who come along and join our Scouting family.
We have had the pleasure of watching some of our Scouts grow - physically, emotionally and intellectually - since they
were in our Joey Scout section and who are now getting ready to move up to Venturer Scouts. Over the past 25 years I
have seen a lot of changes in Scouting. Dealing with change can be difficult and confronting, it can be scary and it can
also be exciting. With the implementation of our New Youth Program, there has been a lot of change recently, much
of it for the better.
Just prior to the holidays I had the pleasure of announcing to the greater Scouting community that our very own
Joey Scout - Dakota - was the first Joey Scout in Queensland to have earned badges in all nine of our new Adventurous
Outdoor Skills areas, including the first Joey Scout in Queensland to earn Alpine badge which involved snow skiing,
toboganning etc, Aquatic badge which involved swimming and snorkelling, Vertical badge (tree climbing, high ropes,
bouldering), bike riding, camping, boating etc. As a mother and as a Leader I am so very, very proud and also very
excited for her and any other youth member who get to start on this exciting new Scouting journey and learn so many
amazing skills.
As we commence our 2020 Scouting year, I am filled with anticipation of what path our Youth will lead us on this year.
Our first night back is always spent brainstorming and the Scouts never cease to amaze me with what they come up
with. With water activities being the major focus this term, each of the sections are looking forward to their respective
water activity days of paddling, sailing etc. Our Group as a whole are waiting eagerly for our annual Group camp
(with survival theme) to spend time catching up with friends, having fun and experiencing new things. We are always
happy when new people arrive and start to experience the adventure that is Scouting. There is always a new ‘first’.
For instance, one of our Scouting friends with years of experience on the stage has turned his hand to directing
and is currently directing his ‘first’ theatre show. Aladdin Trouble is an over 18’s comedy show with a cast of Adults in
Scouting and Guiding. The low ticket price of $45 pp includes a delicious three course meal. The show has a very limited
season and will be showing at 24 Englefield Road Oxley March 27 and March 28. If you would love a great night out
(sorry no kids for this one) hop online and book at www.trybooking.com before tickets are sold out.
By the way, Scouting season is open for adventure from January to December each year. We accept youth from aged
five to 25 and adult members from 18 to 80. Is this the year you and your family start on your amazing Scouting journey?
Check out our facebook page - Richlands - Forest Lake Scout Group to see our adventures. Scouting - it’s what we do.

As your Councillor for Forest Lake Ward, there’s
nothing more important to me than keeping in touch with
local residents, community groups and businesses and
fighting for our community in Council chambers. Firstly,
I hope you’ve kept safe and your family members haven’t
been badly affected by the recent bushfires in Queensland,
Victoria, ACT, NSW and across Australia. My thoughts
are with all who have been affected by these tragic times.
Forest Lake residents have been telling me about how
pleased they are with the improvements they are seeing
at the Lake and in the ward. Recently the Lake has
been undergoing lots of improvements. The bridges have
been refurbished around the Lake parklands, the new
installation of a playground at Freshwater circuit, and
new terracing will begin soon making the front of the lake stage look great for events and more user friendly. I made
sure that the design incorporates features that cater for people with disabilities.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish a happy birthday to Mrs Marge Breitenbach from the Forest Lake
Action Group. Marge has been a very active member of the Probus group and made a huge contribution to Forest lake.
I’m also very pleased to wish the Forest Lake Action Group a happy birthday and thank them for their support and
advocacy. Together we have achieved so much for the Lake!
A special thank you goes to all the residents who have made time to chat with me about local council matters during
my regular community mobile offices. I would like to also thank the many residents for making time to have a chat
with my volunteers while they have been doorknocking and making calls. Your feedback is much appreciated. Be sure
to update all your details with ECQ with a Council election taking place on March 29.
As always, please let me know if you have questions about anything I have raised in this column, Local Government
matters or upcoming events. I encourage residents to make time to please contact my office as I would like to hear what
is important to you on 3407 1211 or visit my Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CharlesStrunk4ForestLakeWard.

 Forest Lake Lions Club update
                                                                                          by Kim Grierson
The Forest Lake Lions are looking forward to another exciting year. We ended 2019 with our annual progressive
dinner, which was great fun. On the 25th December we had our annual visit to the Forest Lake Nursing Home, where
we enjoy visiting the residents. We also had a very successful year with selling of our Christmas cakes and puddings.
Thanks to all who supported this endeavour. All our profits go back into supporting our community.
This year brings some exciting new activities for the club such as our first Bunnings BBQ of the year on Saturday
8 February. Thanks to our new member Lion Ray for facilitating this one. Bunnings BBQ profits put much needed
money into our community account. If you are planning on coming down to Bunnings Oxley, drop by and say hello and
grab a snag and help us raise money for our Forest Lake family.
In March, we have the official opening of the new BBQ facilities and shelter. We joined with the Brisbane City Council
and the Heritage Bank to provide these facilities in the Lions Park located in Manet Crescent so that our residents
can enjoy a BBQ while the children enjoy the playground.

   Forest Lake Men’s Shed Update

Well here we are in 2020; I hope it means more than good eyesight! We finished 2019 with a donation to the Salvation
Army Bush Fire Appeal of $600. From our Forest Lake Calendars, proudly sponsored by local businesses The Lake
News, ROH Builders, Ray White Forest Lake and MTR Property, we donated $600 to Drought Angels to help out our
farmers. Now in 2020 we have just held a BBQ at Bunnings Oxley where we raised $270 in donations for the Bushfire
appeal and we are going to make that up to $550.
So we have started 2020 in a giving and supporting manner which Men’s Shed’s are known for. We are about to
start a program of making bird, possum and bat boxes for the fire prone areas.
You can help us by donating your recyclable bottles and cans which help with important funds to buy ply etc to
make these items. Donations of cans and bottles can be left at the shed anytime.
If any men in our community feel lonely or need somewhere to feel needed, come and see what we have to offer, 25
High Street, in the Salvos carpark Monday to Friday 8am to noon.

Is it really the second month of 2020? It only seems like
yesterday we were celebrating the New Year. Hard to believe
it is now February with the school and annual leave holidays
over. Our thoughts and well wishes go out to all those affected
by the drought and the national bush fires.
This is the month Valentine’s Day is celebrated and giving
a bunch of cut roses is the traditional way of celebrating. As
the cost for cut roses almost trebles at this time of the year,
why not give a potted rose plant that will live for many years
is a far more appropriate way to acknowledge a long-lasting
commitment. Red roses are always the number one choice for
Valentine’s Day. Other roses available with Valentine-friendly
names are Angel Face, Best Friend, My Hero, Seduction or
Sentimental. I’m sure you will find the appropriate rose for
your valentine.
Our first bus trip will be on 19 March and the flyer will
be available at this month’s meeting. Why not check out our
website or facebook for the details as well as open garden visits
and lots of other information.
Big congratulations to Daphne and Gloria Dean for winning
the New Garden section of the Queensland Government
Housing Service Centre Open Gardens Awards for 2019. This
annual event covers gardens from Sherwood to Acacia Ridge under the Housing Service Centre’s homes. This year
Daphne decided to enter and won the new garden section.
I’m sure all the gardens and their gardeners enjoyed the welcome rain at the end of last month. There are some
strappy leaves plants that are most useful in the garden when it comes to ‘beating the heat’. Hasn’t it been hot lately?
They’ve evolved to handle difficult conditions – such as drought, root competition, shade or hot sun – and they’re
amazingly versatile in any landscape. Their upright growth, for example, will make vertical statements. They can be
clumped together to form ground–covering layers, fill containers or be planted as defining borders. What are these
plants? Examples are - Bird of Paradise, Agapanthus, any of the Kangaroo Paw variety, Lomandras (an incredibly
tough Australian native) Ornamental grasses, Spider Lily, and Society Garlic (Tulbaghia spp) to mention a few.
We will start the year off with Coral Larsen as our guest speaker discussing many avenues of gardening. Why not
come along and share the morning with us. Morning tea is available from 9.30am.

We are not fanatical gardeners, just friendly enthusiasts. Please join us!
Next meeting Tuesday, 3rd March 2020 at 10am. Uniting Church Community Life Centre,
528 Waterford Rd, Ellen Grove. For more information call John Prout 0419 634 699 or Jill Lowe 0403 002 143.

Forest Lake Rotary Club update
                                                                                                  by Alan Greig
At a relatively recent meeting of the Forest Lake Rotary Club, I was introduced to a visiting Rotary Peace Fellow from Brazil
who was attending the University of Queensland.
Founded in 2002, Rotary International awards up to 50 Peace Fellowships each year. Since inception, 1200 Peace Fellows have
received fully funded awards. Applicants should be professionals with work experience in international relations or peace and
conflict prevention and resolution which may be studied at any one of six peace centres at universities around the world outside
their home country. The award covers course tuition fees, room and board, round trip transportation and all research and field
study experience.
Candidates must have strong leadership skills, and a clear commitment to peace but may include work in environmental
issues, education, women’s rights, journalism, public health or disease prevention. Fellowship application forms can be found
early in February at the Peace Fellowship page at rotary.org.
Our Peace Fellow is domiciled at International House, University of Queensland. The Rotary Club of Forest Lake is interested
in hearing our current Peace Fellow address interested people at a Club meeting. Should any reader be interested in attending,
please contact me, Alan Greig on 0407 377 715. More information is available at www.rotary resources.org>rotary>peace>scholars.
Many people can be Peace Builders during their daily tasks but may not realise it. Theogene Ngamije was a small boy when
a simple act of kindness by an Australian peacekeeper changed his life. Bombings and shooting had started in his village. The six
year old was crying, not knowing where to go or what to do. Then an Australian soldier gave him an Australian flag and a piece
of biscuit. More than 20 years later, Theogene is a private in the Australian Army and shared his story in the Courage for Peace
Exhibition which opened late 2019 in the Australian War Memorial, one of Rotary’s six Areas of Focus with the goal of advancing
peace through peace builders.
We must continue to recognise our servicemen and women who show great courage, mateship and sacrifice to achieve peace
and freedom. The Courage for Peace Exhibition will be on display until September 2020.

As part of my initial registration to become a pastor, my wife and I had to attend a series of seminars on ministry life.
At the time, I had just started at the church, was a new dad, was studying at college and still working as an accountant.
I arrived at the first seminar with a bad attitude; it was on stress management and when I was asked by the
facilitator to answer the question, “What’s one thing you could do right now to reduce your stress?”, my answer was
less than gracious. I answered, “Not being at this seminar.”
The irony was that the main thrust of the seminar was that much of our stress is caused less by ‘too much work’,
and more by a lack of healthy rhythms. The facilitator gave the example of mobile technology. Before mobile phones,
we had natural ‘down-times’ when we travelled. When we were in the car or walking, we weren’t contactable—it was
natural down-time. However, now, we are always contactable – even on holidays. She gave other examples of rest and
community that have all changed. In other words, the natural, God-ordained, rhythms of life are being crowded out.
But rhythms are all around us and are clearly part of God’s creation. The rhythms of the season, the rhythm of the
tides, the rhythm of the sun and moon, are all pointers to the great principle of Ecclesiastes 3:1, “There is a time for
everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
It is the same in our families. We need rhythms of rest and work, serving others and time to ourselves, time for
community and time for privacy, time for action and time for quiet, time to be on devices and time to be off them.
With the school year now begun and everything in full swing for 2020, it can be easy to let circumstances dictate
the rhythms of our family but I encourage you to take time to look at your family calendar (or start by making one if
you don’t have one) and look at the rhythms of your home.

News from
the 19th Hole Forest Lake Social Golf Club update by Patrick Ayling
The Clubs first game for 2020 was held at Wolston Park Golf Club on Sunday 19th January. With well over 100mm of
rain on the course in the days before, the grass was fairly jumping out of the ground and recovering nicely after the very
long dry spell. As expected, the greens hadn’t been mown for several days and so were on the fluffy side and quite slow, but
true. Nevertheless, we had a great turn out of 30 players who enjoyed their first game of the year with both carts and a
lunch included in their green fees.
The prize winners on the day were: A Grade Winner, Colin Brooke – 39 points; A Runner Up, Don Pickwick - 38 points; B
Grade Winner, Kara Holt – 46 points; B Runner Up, Peter Cuttance – 42 points. The Bradman award went to Mick Eveleigh
with 22 points. Long Drive A, 7 Brian Cruickshank; Long Drive B, 7 Gavin Robinson; Approach 9, Dan McKay; Approach
11, Dave Chettle; NTP 3, Jason White; NTP 8, Mick Morley; NTP 10, Jason Lee; NTP 13, Ian Whiteley. Congratulations to
all prizewinners. Following the game, the club held its AGM where a new Management Committee was elected for 2020.

time. Our Club is not affiliated with any other club or organisation, however, we do support some community
‘not-for-profit’ groups.

centenary evening VIEW club update
Is 2020 the year you expand your horizons? The members of Centenary Evening VIEW Club are always keen to spread
the word about the worthwhile activities that their club undertakes—especially when these activities are conducted
in an atmosphere of fun, fellowship and friendship. We are proud supporters of The Smith Family’s Learning for Life
Program which supports Australian children with their educational needs. You may have seen us late last year at Orion
Shopping Centre demonstrating our gift wrapping skills in order to boost our fund-raising.
We meet on the second Monday of the month at Gertrude McLeod Country Golf Club, 61 Gertrude McLeod Crescent,
Middle Park. Our usual format includes informal socialising, formal meeting, dinner, guest speaker and drawing of
raffles. Apart from these dinners, there is a wide range of activities held throughout each month for members’ enjoyment.
We realise that it takes a degree of bravery to visit a new club and so we encourage ladies “to give us a go” and try us
out by attending a dinner meeting or a coffee and chat morning. Our movie outings also provide the ideal opportunity
for making new friends.
Our February dinner meeting will be held on Monday, February 10. There will be no guest speaker or entertainment
at this meeting because it is handover time from the old committee to the new 2020 committee. It will be time for a
review of the past and a preview of what is planned for 2020.
We meet at 6.30pm for 7.00pm and usually finish by 9.30pm. For catering purposes we need to know numbers by
midday on the Friday before a dinner meeting. You are asked to ring Di on 0408 725 542. She will be able to tell you
more about our club and answer any questions. The cost of the dinner is $35.

In 2020 there are lots of different ways that you can try rugby, train weekly, be in a team or tournament or take
part in a term program. Our motto this season is ‘find your way to play’. We know your name and get you a game
at the Wasps!
We start off this month with the BJRU Cup and working to build teams for the BJRU competition. This is always
hard for us and parents need to understand that to join us means pitching in and taking responsibility for whether
your child has a team on the field. That is what local, grassroots clubs are all about. Whole families join the club to be
part of working together for not only their kids but also other local kids and the community. That is what makes it so
rewarding that we are all part of the team, all with a part to play.
There are many ways we build teams, including joining with other clubs and for us that means our alliance with
Kenmore and Taylor Bridge, which have given our players a dedicated pathway to the UQ Rugby Club. The Junior
Heavies are kicking off and players U13 and up don’t want to miss out. Join up with the UQ Junior Heavies own
dedicated Facebook page to find out more.
This year we are working on more club based activities, as well as finding other opportunities with and at other
clubs. Our vision is to have club based or BJRU based cup, carnival or competition that players can take part in. At
the time of print we are still developing dates etc and planning what our own community rugby cup will look like, so
the best thing that you can do is download Rugby Xplorer on Google play or the App Store, search for our club and
see all the different ways that you can register; you can also message us via our Facebook page and keep up-to-date
with everything. Once you join the club, you can be part of it. No team happens if you don’t register so what are you
waiting for? Be part of it!
