HISTORY WELCOME → →PACKAGES HISTORY → → ITINERARIES PACKAGE → PRESS → INFORMATION → VIEWING → CONTACT → WELCOME TO THE MAS T E R S E X PER I ENCE Every second week of April, Augusta National opens its gates for The Masters, arguably the most exclusive and eagerly anticipated golfing event of the year. Since its founder Bobby Jones held the very first Augusta National Invitational Tournament in 1934, The Masters has had a special place in the hearts of all golf fans and enthusiasts alike. The springtime splendour of Augusta National never disappoints and probably never will. With such iconic moments in golfing history as Nicklaus’s charge in 1986, Faldo’s comeback in 1996 and Tiger’s chip-in in 2005, Augusta has an atmosphere and aura like no other place on earth. We think it’s only fitting that you get to sample that for yourself. W E L C O M E
HISTORY WELCOME → →PACKAGES HISTORY → → ITINERARIES PACKAGE → PRESS → INFORMATION → VIEWING → CONTACT → A GOLF TOURNAMENT LIKE NO OTHER ST EEP E D I N T R AD I T I O N Augusta National Golf Club was founded by Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur champion, and Clifford Roberts, an astute investment banker in New York. The 365-acre property, originally Fruitland Nurseries, was purchased in 1931 for $70,000. Jones helped design the golf course, working alongside the esteemed British architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie. Jones’s popularity within the game helped attract golf’s biggest stars to the Masters, beginning with the inaugural event in 1934. Since then, some of golf’s most memorable moments – both comebacks and collapses – have taken place on the lush course. The Masters Tournament has been held the first full week of April every year since its inception, except for 1943-1945. During this time, the tournament was cancelled due to World War II and the course was used to raise cattle and turkeys to help the war effort. Augusta National is closed all summer, from the third week of May until mid-October, primarily for renovations. Although a single performance at the Masters can define a player’s career, the game’s greatest players have won multiple titles, including Jack Nicklaus (6), Arnold Palmer (4), Tiger Woods (4) and Sam Snead (3). HISTORY WELCOME → →PACKAGES HISTORY → → ITINERARIES PACKAGE → PRESS → INFORMATION → VIEWING → CONTACT → BBC GOLF CORRESPONDENT IAIN CARTER SPEC TAT I NG AT AU G US TA N AT I O NAL Nothing quite prepares you for your first moments at the Augusta National. Yes you might be prepared for the beauty, to witness the golfing test and see the world’s best players ply their trade but the scale and undulations of the place are unimaginable until you actually arrive on the property. Television can never quite capture the flow of the course, the rapid descent of the tenth and eleventh holes to the sunken golfing paradise that is Amen Corner and the draining climb back up to the eighteenth green. The place is unique. No one runs - top speed for all is a brisk walk. Spectators create their own grandstands by placing their portable seats at a vantage point of their choice and no one is allowed to carry a mobile phone. Spectator views are the most unfettered in the professional game because players, their caddies and a few rules officials are the only people allowed inside the ropes. It feels busy, especially in the merchandise area which is the only place on the planet official Masters products can be bought, but it retains a quaint feel in keeping with Georgia’s southern charm. And, although it is undoubtedly golf’s most glamorous major, the on course sustenance including Augusta’s famous Pimento cheese sandwiches are probably the most reasonably priced refreshments in world sport.
