4:00 PM | 6:00 PMWELCOME TO CHRISTMAS AT CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY-TEMPE
Dorothee Soelle once said, “If my hands are fully occupied in holding on to something, I
can neither give nor receive.”
On this night, we are invited forward with our hands open to have the ability to do both: to
give and to receive. In receiving, we are opening ourselves to allow the mystery of God’s
love to penetrate the depths of our being through the gaze of a newborn baby boy
wrapped in swaddling clothes. The gift we receive is nothing less than love become flesh.
The very love we receive in God becoming human is also the invitation for us to give. We
are invited to give of ourselves in the same way that God gives of God’s self. In short, we
are invited to become holy in the ways that we shape our lives after the way of Christ
Jesus.
Tonight, we are encouraged to become holy through God becoming human. And so, we
draw near to the light of the world who appears in vulnerability. We are invited to
approach the manger not with hands filled with things but with hands open and ready to
receive. We, like Mary, are invited to respond saying, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord;
let it be with me according to your word.”
We extend our gratitude to the many people who have given generously of
themselves to make this Advent/Christmas season a joyful celebration of God’s love.
We are grateful for those who have made special contributions, in memory and
thanksgiving for beloved friends and family, for the adornment of the church and
chapel.
The Christmas Offering supports the many ways that Church of the Epiphany-Tempe
shares itself with the city of Tempe. Your generosity is received with thanksgiving and
joy. You are invited to place your gifts in the alms basins, located at the rear of the
church, prior to worship or during the peace.
