The Nightingale Centre - Great Hucklow - Something for everyone . . .
Message from
                             the Centre Manager
Welcome to our 2019 brochure. As ever, the variety of
organisations putting on events at the centre is amazing.
I do hope there is something amongst it all for you.
If you know the centre, you’ll be aware that in terms
of food and comfort we are really closer to being a
good hotel than a “hostel”. You’ll also be aware that
we seldom stand still in making improvements. In this
last year, we have converted yet more rooms to
en-suite and improved the rear terrace area - a
perfect place for soaking up the sun.

If you would like to organise your own event here,
please contact me and I will help you plan this.
Whatever your interests - conferences, cycling,
spiritual events, holidays, walking, commercial,
training, family get-togethers, school or college
programmes - we will make every effort to meet
your own particular needs.
Meanwhile we believe our prices are very
competitive, like for like. For families with
children we have made some changes to
make staying here even more affordable. We
have a wide range of accommodation options
so we’ve not quoted prices in the brochure,
but these are just an email or phone
                          call away.

Please do ask me about our range of prices or about anything in the
brochure.

Have you ever struggled to find a prayer that says exactly what you have have
     in your heart?
Do you search for opening words and chalice lighting words to set
the theme of your service but fail to find what you need?
Do you wonder if your closing words or benedictions could be more relevant to
     your service?
Have you thought about writing your own worship material but lack the confidence
     to try?

If you have ever experienced any of these problems, then come along to our
conference. We will look at ways we can approach writing worship material so that
we can each say what is in our heart. You will learn the best way to say what
you mean, in a way that is graceful and powerful, and build your confidence so
that you can always have just the right prayer, opening and closing words,
blessing or benediction. Whether you are an experienced worship leader, or only
lead worship once in a while, this conference has something for you.

Opportunities to book your own event
The Nightingale Centre is booked by a very wide range of
organisations. But we do still have some weeks, weekends
or mid-weeks free, especially, but not only, in winter
months (when there is a discount!). And we sometimes
have space alongside other groups using the centre at all
times of the year.
Perhaps the school for which you are a Governor is looking
for a field study venue (we have wide experience with school and
youth groups). Or perhaps a group of friends is looking for somewhere
to stay in this lovely part of Derbyshire - a chance to visit attractive
towns, villages and stately homes, or to take a walk or two in the
local countryside.
Perhaps you have a family occasion to celebrate, or your congregation
wants to book a holiday together. Or your organisation needs to
undertake a review, provide training or hold an AGM or conference
away from base. Or you want to organise a retreat, away from it all.
                            All good reasons to
give Stella a ring (or email) and ask about availability!

Hucklow Summer School

‘

Theology in the Flesh’: how
might our embodied experience
shape our answers to life’s
ultimate questions?

                                                          – Carol P. Christ
How might our experience of life, our world-view, and our theological
outlook be shaped by factors related to our bodies: our gender,
sexuality, race, dis/ability, appearance, age, state of physical and mental
health, neurological architecture, etc?

In this year’s summer school we will explore the ways in which our
bodily experience interacts with our spiritual understanding. How do we
connect with God – or with meaning, depth, and purpose – through our
bodies and our physical senses? How do material realities – social,
historical and environmental events in the world around us – shape our
faith journeys? And how might our theological understanding shift through
exposure to a wider range of embodied perspectives?

Theme Speakers: Bob Janis-Dillon, Eleanor Chiari, Jen Hazel, Robin Hanford and
Winnie Gordon
Engagement Group Facilitators: Mark Stewart & John Harley, Celia Cartwright and
Sue Woolley. Sarah Tinker & Danny Crosby, Catherine Coyne & Sheena Gabriel
Children’s and Young People’s Group Leaders: Claire Maddocks & Jim Blair

"Let Us Pray"
Fri 3rd to Mon 6th May

We will be exploring what is prayer and the many forms of prayer. The
Derbyshire countryside will help us to be in a more mindful state.
The Nightingale Centre gardens will help us to be more at one with nature and
connect with our more spiritual side.
We will learn about and make prayer flags to be used in our Sunday worship.
Kindness rocks will unleash our creative side and allow us to send prayers to
others, known or unknown.
We have a guest appearance on Saturday to lead us in singing meditation. For
those who have not experienced this just wait. There will be time for meditation
and connection with self and others - a time just to be.
There will of course be fun and games!

The Foy Society is a fellowship of women and men who, in a spirit of free inquiry,
seek to understand the nature of present issues and problems - political, social and
religious. It was founded in 1924 as The Fellowship of Youth. In 1957 it became
known as the Foy Society as it had gradually taken on the role of an
    inter-generational group.
