THE RED BUS TOUR
On Tuesday morning the Grade 7s set off for their much anticipated
excursion on the Red Bus Tour around Cape Town. Upon arrival
there was a mad rush to buy tickets and get on the bus to ensure
that the groups stuck within their time frames for the day. It was
amazing to see how many tourists were out and about visiting
places of interest and enjoying all that the Mother City has to offer.
The Grade 7s learnt that they had to adapt quickly and think on
their feet, as many curve balls were thrown at them. Places of
interest that were visited included: the Holocaust museum; District
Six Museum; Zeitz Mocca; Jewish Museum, Company’s Garden; The Slave Lodge; Greenmarket
Square and the Table Mountain Cableway. The excitement on the bus on the way home was testament
to the fact that the children learnt a huge amount and that they had an incredible day. Outings like this
once again highlight the importance of Project-Based learning and collaboration with peers.GRADE 7 E-DAY!
This year Simpson Hall was transformed into a bustling
Indoor Market hosted by our Grade 7 pupils. The
vibrant colours, vibey music and numerous stalls
selling delicious treats and crafts catered for every
need. Sport enthusiasts also had their moment at goal
shooting, trying to outwit, outsmart and outplay their
opponents! Well done to our Grade 7s of 2021 for their
enthusiasm and hard work to make this another
successful venture.PLOTTING DATA The Grade 6 pupils constructed a line graph by using the results of their pulse rate after exercise and determined that the fitter they were in the group, the lower their pulse rates were! Pupils had to do 100 star jumps and then check their pulse rate for 1 minute. This activity was completed 5 times, the information was recorded in a table and then the data was plotted onto a line graph!

On Tuesday the 1st XI took on the SH Staff. The 1st XI batted first and lost early wickets. They had to dig deep
and string a few good partnerships together. The start of this was the Sayurin and Robert partnership. They
managed to scramble to a respectful 120 all out. The Staff XI started very well with the first over going for 14
runs with two monster sixes coming off the bat of Mr Weekes. The second over started even better with the first
two balls being smashed to the boundary for 4. A few wickets started to fall with some great bowling from Nikhil
and Christian. The staff found themselves in some trouble needing 13 runs in only 15 minutes. Mr Baines saw
the team to the finish line with the Staff XI winning by 4 wickets.

Ms Nicky Newton-King (Grade 7 Class of 1979)
will receive the degree Doctor of Laws (LLD)
honoris causa for her contribution in developing
South African financial law and regulation and
strengthening the Johannesburg stock Exchange
(JSE) as a foundational pillar of South Africa’s
economy, through her leadership for more than 23
years. In 2012, she became the first women chief
executive Officer of the JSE in its 125-year
history. As a corporate finance and securities
lawyer, she has made an enduring contribution to
the fields of law and commerce.
THE COOLEST BAND IN THE SCHOOL!
The Jazz Band has had an amazing year. They recently
had two performances at Founder's Day as well as at one
of the Mini-Concerts. These kids have really shown
commitment these past few weeks and our preparations
for 2022 have already started. I am looking forward to
another exciting year and also to seeing them become
part of future Jazz Bands and orchestras in their
respective High Schools. It took us 4 years to reach this
playing level and I want to invite other musicians and
non-musicians to give these instruments a go so that we
keep the Jazz Band tradition going for many years!
GARDEN-EXPERTS!
Pre-Schoolers Nicholas and Matthew enjoyed showing our grounds staff how they tend to a garden!THE SNOW DESERT
This week, the Dormice (Grade
00) visited Antarctica and were
astounded to learn that it is
referred to as a ‘Snow Desert’, as
well as the fact that the population
is zero! Only tourists and
scientists visit during the summer.
Following the icy theme, we used
shaving foam to create our own
snow and they thoroughly
enjoyed themselves, using their
hands and arms to create and
play with this pretend snow.
Squeals of laughter could be
heard, especially when
confronted by monster snow
hands. After lunch, what could be
more fun than delighting our taste
buds with chocolate ice-cream?
They all concluded that eating
something cold in the snow might result in definite brain freeze! A big thanks to Mrs Rautenbach for
all the lovely ‘Around the World’ treats we have enjoyed over the past 8 weeks. With Mrs Botha making
a discovery of funky scissors at the back of her cupboard the children enjoyed using these tools and
their different serrated edges to create their own paper pictures. Nicholas enjoyed experimenting with
roller paints and created his own flag. (I think the country is called Harpur land!!)ENACTING IDIOMS In Drama this week the Grade 5s chose an Idiom and created plays. Well done, Grade 5s!
GRADE 7 MUSIC CONCERT It all started with a desire. You took the first few steps and your life changed forever. It can never return to how it was before. Music-making is a life-enhancing and life-changing activity. It must be shared. We are often confronted by voices that tell us that we are not good enough, that we are not worthy of playing music. But there are also the voices that encourage us to not hide our talents, to keep going when things are tough. And we continue our journey. For some of our Grade 7s, their musical journey started in Grade 2, others have just joined this journey recently. My message at this transition point in your journey, dear Grade 7, is that your music matters. Every note that you have played thus far has changed you, and every time you have shared your gift with others, you left them altered, you filled them with hope and joy and beauty beyond their wildest imaginings. Your musical journey is a profound experience that never ends. Your music is a gift. It is powerful. It deserves attention. You might leave Somerset House, but by no means should it be the end of your musical journey. You have a responsibility to use your gift to enrich the lives of all the thousands of new people you will meet in your life. Thank you, dear Grade 7 musician, for being courageous, for taking that first step, for sharing in our lives and for altering us with your music. Where ever your journey leads you, show gratitude for the opportunity to learn music, thank those who have helped to shape your music and never stop sharing your music. It was a magnificent evening with stellar performances. Well done to each performer. Thank you to Mrs Allwood for all your arrangements. Thank you to all our parents who contributed to the evening.
READY, STEAD, COOK! The Garde 3s put on such a show this week with their oral presentations of how to make some of their favourite recipes. Mrs Baines and Mrs Jones gained a few awesome ideas for supper and treats… not to mention the few extra kg’s. We were so impressed at how the children have grown in confidence and ability over the year and are quite sad to be sending them off the Grade 4. Well done Grade 3s!
AFRIKAANS IN GRAAD 4!

SHARK!
Some of our Social Swimmers had some fun in the water during their last session for the term.CHRISTMAS IN GRADE 000 It’s Christmas time in the Grade 000 classes and the little Ladybirds have been busy with many different Christmas activities. We decorated a Christmas tree and what a big surprise when Zaria spotted Elfie, the elf on the shelf, in the classroom!
GRADE 1 ORIENTATION There was such great excitement as we welcomed the 2022 Grade 1s to spend some time in their classes for next year. The Grade 1 classes for 2022 are absolutely full to capacity and we can’t wait to see them flourish in our Prep School.
GRADE 1 PARENT INFORMATION SESSION
The It was wonderful to be able to welcome the Grade 1 parents of 2022 to the “big school” on Tuesday
evening. The children had visited on Monday, but Tuesday evening saw the parents visiting the
classroom, seeing the books that are ready for the children in Grade 1 and attending an information
session. The evening is beneficial for those who may not have experience of the prep school yet and
those families that are new to Somerset House. The parents and children now all have an idea of what
is expected in Grade 1. We look forward to welcoming them all in January 2022 .
OAKWOOD ORIENTATION
The Oakwood Orientation for the new parents of 2022 took place on Tuesday, 26 November, in the
Haydock Hall. Mr Huggett began the proceedings by informing the new parents that Mrs Caron Botha
was retiring after 30 years of service in total and that Mrs Buffy Allanson had resigned to take up a new
position in starting a school in Port Elizabeth. He then introduced the new HOD, Mrs Francoise Kock,
as well as the new Grade 00 teacher, Mrs Melanie Beck, who is well known to Somerset House and
Oakwood. Mrs Allanson addressed the new parents about the nuts and bolts of what to expect in the
new year at the start of the school.
On Wednesday, 27 November, the Grade 000 parents and children visited their future class rooms and
teachers. Great fun was had by all as they familiarized themselves in their new learning environment,
played and had a juice and biscuits under the Oaks! We look forward to them joining the Oakwood
family next year.
