WEEK ENDING: Friday 12th February 2021
It has been a great start to the year at Rawson Primary Schools, settling into the year in a “COVID
normal” way with new routines and structures for the year being locked in. Teachers have spent the
holidays decluttering the classroom spaces making the school more open and light. We are also
transforming the quite room into our new library space.
School Assembly
Over the past few weeks, we have been holding a brief assembly under the flagpole at the front of the
school on Mondays at 9am. Parents and visitors are more that welcome to come along, social distance
and find out what is happening in the week ahead at Rawson PS.
Home Reading
Our home reading program is well underway again in 2021, with all students aiming to read at home at
least five nights a week. Last year as a school (despite COVID & Remote Learning) as a school we read
a total of 3560 nights in total. We aim this year to break our 2019 record of 5066 nights of home reading
for the year.
Once again reading diaries will be collected and counted on a Friday mornings, with reading certificates
presented on Monday morning at assembly.
The aim of home reading is practise and enjoyment. We do not expect you to teach your child at home.
The time you spend creating an enjoyable experience in which children can practise skills and strategies
they have learnt at school is important and appreciated. Home reading is not designed for children to
read more difficult books as quickly as possible children should be reading books they can read
competently and with confidence in order to practise a range of reading behaviours (including fluency)
without struggling with the text, the most important of these being comprehension (understanding what
you have read).
School Sports
Our annual Tanjil Valley district whole school athletics day is fast approaching and has been organised
to take place on Friday 5th of March. This involves all students from Grades Prep — 6 representing
Rawson Primary School against students from Willow Grove, Tanjil South and Narracan Primary
Schools. Parents will need to transport their children to and from the Sports on the day to Newborough
Athletics Track, with the day normally starting around 9am and concluding with presentations at 2pm. A
more run down of times and events will be sent home in the weeks to come.SCHOOL NEWS
Swimming
This term we are using our funds from our Victorian Governments Swimming in Schools Program &
Sporting Schools, to run a whole school swimming program at the Rawson Indoor Pool. Started last
Monday and will run for 5 sessions, and conclude on 15th of March. Please remember to label all
your child/rens items of clothing including school uniform.
Preps
Our Preps have made a wonderful start to their school year, and it is great to see them enter the
school with such enthusiasm. Each Wednesday during February is a Prep Rest Day. The first full
week for Prep students starts on Monday the 1st of March.
Hats
Our SunSmart policy states that hats need to be worn in Terms 1 & 4. All new students arriving to
Rawson for the first time receive their first hat for free. Other-wise, school hats can be purchased at
the school office for $13.50.
Parent Information Evening (EOI)
Rawson Primary School is looking at running a Parent Information Evening, in a few weeks time
(most likely a Tuesday 5.30-6pm). We are seeking interest from parents who would be interested in
attending and will run this evening if we have sufficient numbers. Please log onto Compass to
express your interest in attending, or call the school office on 0351653443.

2020/21 Bushfire Relocation Plan
As Rawson Primary School is on the Victorian Bushfire at Risk Register (BARR), we have a number of
obligations to the Department of Education to do with emergency planning to ensure the safety of our students,
staff and visitors.
Our updated Emergency Management – Relocation Plan has now been signed off by DET and as such, will be
put into place on days of Severe and Extreme fire danger. On these days the school will be relocated to
Newborough Primary School (Murray Rd) and fully closed on CODE RED days.
Transport will not be provided and our bus will also not run on these days. Families will be asked to make the
best choice for their children/family on these days and enact their own Bushfire Survival Plan. Families will be
required to transport their children if they make the choice to send them to Newborough PS for the day/s. Rawson
Staff will meet our families at this location. No staff, students or families are permitted at Rawson PS on these
days. Families will be contacted/informed via text message, Compass, Social Media and Local
Radio the day prior to these Severe and Extreme fire days.GENERAL NEWS
