THINGS TO CONSIDER REOPENING YOUR SALON WHEN AFTER COVID19 - www.hairdressingcouncil.ie - Irish Hairdressing Council
We know everyone is a little deflated at the news that
Hairdressing & Barbering is in Phase 4 of the Government's
'Roadmap for the Reopening of Society & Business'. Currently,
this will put us all back into the job we love from the 20th July
2020.

While we wait for the HSE's & the HSA's guidelines on making our
workplaces safe, the Irish Hairdressing Council has reviewed the
International guidance. We hope this will offer some guidance
and practical advice on how to move forward and get your Salon
and staff ready to hit the ground running.

We are engaging with both Government and Health Authorities
and will keep you updated throughout our social media
platforms.

Nobody knows your Salon and cares about your Clients as
much as you do, so now is the time to start planning and
preparing for their safe return.

Irish Hairdressing Council

Before Reopening
Before reopening it’s essential to deep clean and sanitize the Salon

Establish adequate infection prevention and control measures
including, infrastructure development and handwashing facilities.

 Infrastructure could include:
Screens will be a useful tool to prevent cross infection at Reception,
    Backwash and Styling Sections.
Ensure all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that will be
required by both clients and staff are in stock and readily
    available.
You may decide to use individual trolleys with styling products etc.
with each stylist taking responsibility for same.
Cleaning products should be fit for purpose and in line with best
    practice.
    Use disposable towels
Larger waste bins to accommodate above.
Remove all magazines from your Salon.
Inspect the toilets and make a list of all the additional items
    needed under the new guidelines.

Staffing & Rostering
Hold a staff meeting about retraining on Salon cleanliness, hand
wash techniques, and other safety practises, including use of
 Disposable gloves and face masks/shields.
 Maintain respiratory etiquette.
Develop a Cleaning Roster, plus Signage outlining Clients
 responsibility to the next user.
Use disposable Towels, Gowns and Aprons on your clients. Have
sealed bags ready with sterilized combs and brushes where
possible for individual clients. Staff may need two sets of
equipment as a minimum so that one can be sanitized as the
 other is in use.
Staff Breaks should be staggered and taken off-site, e.g. in your
 car.
Look at your staff rosters and space out shifts accordingly,
bearing in mind the salon may need to be open seven days a
week and with extended opening hours.

                                                                             www.hairdressingcouncil.ie
Reopening & Ongoing
Ideally, there should not be clients in the waiting area. Where this
is not possible, it will be prudent to appropriately distanced chairs
 available.
 Contactless payment should be encouraged.
Message clients in advance asking them to attend the
appointment alone and outline their duties towards helping you
make this the safest visit to the salon possible.
Updated client information forms may be useful.
No coats or bags where possible Individual sealed bags with
Gowns and Towels, individually prepared in advance for
scheduled clients. The same bag should be reused and sealed
with above for in house Laundry (over 60 degrees wash)
Advise clients in advance that no food or drink should be brought
into or consumed on the premises
Manage the influx and rebooking etc. to minimise unnecessary
contact between the clients with each other and also between
 clients and staff
Advise clients that if feeling unwell or have a high temperature not
to attend appointment before receiving medical advice. Let them
know you will accommodate them again at a suitable time
Make Antibacterial gel/hand wipes available to clients – ensure
clients and staff use these as they enter the salon and throughout
 the day
 Sanitise phone after every use

Sanitisation
Allow sufficient time in between clients to
sanitize your basin and work area eg 15mins.

It would be a useful exercise to do a dry run
with a staff member standing in for the client
to get the timing correct before organising
 appointments.

                                                                         www.hairdressingcouncil.ie
Social Distancing
Social Distancing will still be in operation so you need to spend time
organising how that is going to work in your individual Salon.

Client Numbers: Now is the time to start looking realistically at how
many clients you can safely look after per day whilst adhering to
restrictions. This will need to be reviewed regularly based on
Government recommendations.

Posters & Signs for Your Premises
The Department of Health has developed public health information
posters and social distancing graphics to display on premises.
  Public health advice posters
  Physical distancing graphics

More posters, leaflets and social media assets are available on HSE
posters and resources.

Also on the Health & Safety Authority Website here

                                                                         www.hairdressingcouncil.ie
Operations
With extended working hours for employees, you may have to
amend their contract of employment to allow for same.
Look carefully at holiday requests during this busy period. Contact
staff now to move forwards on this and seek HR advice where
 necessary
Look at your stock levels, and a general guideline your order may
 look like a Christmas one.
Engage with your supplier where debt exists and discuss a
 payment plan
Managing demand: Each Salon will have a different system, but
as guidance, some salons are going to operate a rolling on of
columns so that those who did have appointments which they
missed during the pandemic get seen first.
It is also worth putting a list together now of long-standing clients
who visit your Salon regularly. Reassure clients that you will see
them as soon as possible and keep in contact with them.
Look at your pricing system and ensure that it covers the extra
time you will be spending with the client and in between sanitising
your work area. You will also need to charge for all PPE
equipment used by stylist and client, as salons cannot absorb this
 cost right now.
Extra time will be required for colour correction etc so engage
with your client pre-service and illicit this information from them
 (photo of hair etc).
A new patch test may be required.
Before reopening check the water, heating, phones, Credit Card
Machine etc are all working, with a fallback plan where possible
Engage with all Senior Debt, prioritise and communicate with your
 creditors.
It would be best practise to record the movement of staff and
clients in and out of the Salon in the event of 'Contact Tracing'.
Accurate records should be maintained of Visitors, including
Deliveries of stock. These should occur by appointment and
 ideally outside of client hours.
Think about having pleasant music and not the news – get staff
involved with playlists as this will lift their mood also.

                                                                         www.hairdressingcouncil.ie
